SCP-XXXX
Someone is calling
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4987 should be contained within a standard containment room with an elevated platform for SCP-4987 to be placed on. When testing with SCP-4987, the user must not take any medication for headaches or head trauma after usage of SCP-4987. This may risk the user suffering from trigeminal neuralgia for precisely one month. A maximum of three D-Class personnel are permitted to be in the same room as SCP-4987 at once.
Description: SCP-4987 is an antique dial telephone which was taken to containment in 2005. The phone is an SNW30 and was presumed to be manufactured sometime during the 1930s. The body, cable and phone itself are laminated black whilst the dial is an aged brass. The phone is still fully functional and able to make and receive calls yet SCP-4987 will act at different times with no correlation. Containment team was sent in after the suicide of [DATA EXPUNGED] was reported. [DATA EXPUNGED] was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia four weeks before their suicide.
After thorough testing by research team █, SCP-4987 rings and when the call is answered, a voice on the other side will ask for someone, that the voice claims they know, to talk to them. The person that the voice asks for is a random selection but if the user has known accomplices, friends or family close to them, the voice will ask for them instead. The voice has been reported to vary in gender, tone and age into four five different characters [SEE ADDENDUM M-1]. The being who answers the phone will then reportedly seek out the nearest living human to hand the phone to. This has been described as an uncontrollable action by test subjects. After the call is handed over to the one the voice asks for, the subject will hear nothing through the phone for precisely two seconds before the call hangs up. Many suspected it was just a prank caller but multiple tests proved otherwise.
The symptoms of the user who answers SCP-4987 are unknown in terms of causes. Once the voice asks for a subject, the user will enter a state where they will seek the person on the phone. After waking up from this state, they will not remember anything they did after they listened to SCP-4987. Whilst in this state any danger which the brain would identify is instead ignored, possibly suggesting an alteration to the frontal lobe caused by listening to SCP-4987. In some studied cases, some calls have requested to others who are meters away well known to and from the phone user whilst others have been almost a days trip away and complete strangers. Furthermore, tests subjects have reported that they will not remember or receive any feeling whilst in this state including the possible effects of dehydration or malnourishment.
After the use of SCP-4987, the user will suffer a significant headache for at least two hours but have been recorded to go on for five and a half hours at one instance. After testing, any being which attempts to take any headache medication will suffer from trigeminal neuralgia for one month. Researchers presumed this is why [DATA EXPUNGED] took his own life.
Addendum M-1: A description of the four five different personalities that SCP-4987 communicates with.
1. ‘Manny’
‘Manny’ is the most common personality which SCP-4987 uses. The voice is male, appears to have a Bostonian accent and sounds like a late teenager/early adult. It usually talks about baseball and video games, suggesting that ‘Manny’ is a college/university student. Its personality is usually charismatic and positive but when provoked or challenged they will either become unresponsive or mocking towards the interviewer.
2. ‘Camille’
‘Camille’ is a female adult and is most often used when SCP-4987 is feeling happy or gleeful. ‘Camille’ is estimated to be around the age of forty and usually talks about gardening or children but will only speak in French. It explains that it wants to have a child with its ‘husband' [name of ‘husband’ unknown] yet explains that it is unable to have a child. This could suggest ‘Camille’ is perhaps infertile or its ‘husband’ simply refuses to have a child. If ‘Camille’ is provoked or challenged, it will often stay silent or change the question, showing now emotional change.
3. ‘Nigel’
‘Nigel’ is SCP-4987’s voice only when it is distressed or frustrated. Consequently, ‘Nigel’ has quite an aggressive personality and will refuse most dialogue including questions. ‘Nigel’ is the most self-aware and often complains about the facility standards in a heavy Scottish accent and may even speak Scottish Gaelic at times. After many tried interviews, researchers have uncovered that it is impossible to change ‘Nigel’s’ emotion and it will stay agitated until SCP-4987 disconnects the call or the phone is merely hung up.
4. ‘Lucy’
‘Lucy’ is the rarest voice out of all of SCP-4987’s characters. ‘Lucy’ sounds like a young girl due to her pitch and her unsophisticated vocabulary and researchers estimate her age is somewhere in between four and six years old. ‘Lucy’ often asks more questions about the interviewer when we spoke with it and keeps asking where its parents are. ‘Lucy’s’ personality is that’s it’s usually timid yet curious yet when it becomes provoked or challenged, ‘Lucy’ will cry whilst asking to see its parents. ‘Lucy’ was the final character that SCP-4987 used when speaking.
5. [DATA EXPUNGED]
[DATA EXPUNGED] is the latest character that SCP-4987 has revealed. SCP-4987 has only used this voice when interviewing once and has other used its other characters. [DATA EXPUNGED] seems to be an aged man with a low voice pitch. When spoken with, [DATA EXPUNGED] appeared hysterical and lost, claiming it was ‘trapped inside this damn phone’ which is a quote from the singular interview the foundation managed to record. [DATA EXPUNGED] would not listen to any questions Interviewer ████ attempted to ask at the time. Nothing [DATA EXPUNGED] has spoken has been made into any sense.
Addendum A-2: A detailed guide on how to question all the four five characters for interviewers.
1. ‘Manny’
‘Manny’ requires some precaution when interviewing. When speaking with ‘Manny’, it is recommended to always begin the conversation with a remark about a physical sporting activity to gain its interest. If no remark is made, then ‘Manny’ may act uninterested or just not respond to any dialogue completely. ‘Manny’ is usually outgoing yet when provoked, will mock the interviewer.
2. ‘Camille’
‘Camille’ requires the least concern when interviewing. When conversing with ‘Camille’ speak as gentle as possible with a soft tone. The speaker must also speak in French. ‘Camille’ requires no preconditions to be made unlike ‘Manny’ and ‘Lucy’. ‘Camille’ will openly answer questions about its ‘personal life’ (if such a thing exists) but not a large number of questions related to SCP-4987. Be cautious not to agitate or offend ‘Camille’ for the character will often stay silent until SCP-4987 disconnects the call.
3. ‘Nigel’
‘Nigel’ will always be uncooperative. There is nothing the interviewer can say or do to possibly ask ‘Nigel’ a question which will be answered. The only source of information which ‘Nigel’ provides is SCP-4987’s preferences when being contained. Examples of this is either the space SCP-4987 is in is aesthetically unpleasant surroundings, suggesting that SCP-4987 has a mind for cosmetics and decor. ‘Nigel’ will mainly keep asking when he will be released and in order to keep ‘Nigel’ calm, explain that it will be free soon.
4. ‘Lucy’
‘Lucy’ requires the most caution when interviewing. ‘Lucy’ is surprisingly the most informative of all the characters although when questioned, the interviewer must be particularly cautious. The interviewer’s tone must stay completely calm and gentle whilst frequently asking questions about ‘Lucy’s’ personal life.
This includes questions such as ‘what’s your favorite pass time?’, ‘how is school going?’ and ‘tell me about your favorite toys/dolls’. In between these questions, attempt to ask questions about SCP-4987. If ‘Lucy’ refuses to answer, do not ask any more questions about SCP-4987 for five to ten minutes. Under any circumstances, do not challenge ‘Lucy’ or seem agitated to it in any way. This may result in ‘Lucy’ not appearing as a voice in SCP-4987 for at least a week (the highest length of time ‘Lucy’ didn’t appear that was recording was five and a half months after a particularly challenging interviewer). Only higher ranked researchers are allowed to interview ‘Lucy’ because or the level of experience you need to obtain.
5. [DATA EXPUNGED]
Do not attempt to communicate with [DATA EXPUNGED] primarily because it is time-wasting. When [DATA EXPUNGED] is silent between exclamations, attempt to ask questions but don’t expect any communicable reply. Listen closely to [DATA EXPUNGED]’s dialogue and playback the recording to researchers to allow them to study it.
