Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX is to be contained in a standard safe class anomalous object locker at site-██. SCP-XXXX must never be handled by Foundation staff without protective gloves. Staff requesting the use SCP-XXXX for any purpose other than research must obtain written permission from a site manager.

Description:

SCP-XXXX is a statuette of a humanoid arachnid entity, most likely intended to be a rendering of the Greek Goddess Arachne. The statuette appears to be cast from silver although attempts to analyze it have been inconclusive due to its apparently indestructible nature. The silver figure is set atop a circular base of non-anomalous mahogany wood with a small inscription. The inscription reads: "To our human friends in the Order of Arachne, Brooklyn Chapter. Presented in 1941, Year of Our Lady."

The anomalous property of SCP-XXXX takes effect whenever a human subject touches the silver figure directly to the skin of any part of their body. Subjects report that they immediately enter an altered state of consciousness in which they experience the last moments of the life of each member of the arachnid species that they have intentionally killed during their lifetime in a chronological sequence. From the perspective of outside observers this whole process appears to complete practically instantaneously regardless of the length of the experience subjectively for test subjects. This altered state can be experienced repeatedly by the same subject.

While in this altered state subjects report experiencing both the thoughts and emotions of each arachnid as well as pain and other physical sensations. Despite this altered state being experienced from the limited perspective of arachnids, subjects report that they are innately aware that they are inhabiting the body of an arachnid whilst retaining the memory of their human existence throughout the experience.

This sequence of experiences only includes the arachnids that were killed intentionally by the subject. This was established by researchers after conducting experiments involving the intentional and accidental killing of arachnids by subjects during repeated testing of SCP-XXXXs anomalous effect. Test subjects reported experiencing the deaths of the arachnids that they had intentionally killed and not those which they had killed accidentally or had no knowledge of killing.

Given the full sensory experience caused by SCP-XXXX subjects have described the experience caused by SCP-XXXXs anomalous effect as being extremely traumatic. In instances in which the subject had a history of tormenting or otherwise causing harm to arachnids for an extended period prior to their expiry the experience is described as being considerably extended to encompass all of the suffering caused by the human subject.

Given the considerable emotional and psychological impact of SCP-XXXXs anomalous effect as well as the repeatable nature of the experience, its use as an interrogation tool for Foundation staff has been proposed by Lead Researcher ████. This request is currently pending O5 approval.

The secondary effect of SCP-XXXX is most readily evident in human subjects that had previously exhibited symptoms of arachnophobia. Every subject diagnosed with arachnophobia prior to experiencing the altered state induced by SCP-XXXXs primary anomalous effect were found to be completely cured of any phobic response to arachnids of any kind after the experience. Furthermore all subjects who have experienced the altered state caused by SCP-XXXX report an increased empathy for arachnids in general as a result of the experience.

Testing on human subjects who have never intentionally harmed an arachnid discovered that the primary anomalous effect is replaced by a separate anomalous effect. Instead of entering an altered state of consciousness subjects report feeling a pleasant sensation of warmth throughout their body and subsequent medical examination has demonstrated that injury or physical abnormalities in these subjects are cured instantly through unknown means. The extent of the healing property of this effect in such subjects is still being researched.

Recovery:

The object was recovered following an FBI raid of an abandoned property in Red Hook, Brooklyn NY in 1949 following reports of cult activity at the property. No arrests were made at the scene however a number of esoteric texts were recovered along with SCP-XXXX. The texts are written in a code or language which has yet to be deciphered. SCP-XXXX and the associated texts were remanded into Foundation custody after the anomalous property of SCP-XXXX was reported by the responding FBI agents during recovery.
