Item #: SCP-6924

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Provisional Research Area 6924 has been established outside SCP-6924's targeting range to allow the safe transfer of verbal information. A secure perimeter has been established around the circumference of SCP-6924's mass, at a distance of six hundred feet away, one hundred feet farther than SCP-6924's current estimated targeting range to account for the possibility of this range extending as a result of an SCP-6924 growth event. Whilst located within the perimeter, aside from allocated questions to be used during experimentation, all personnel must refrain from doing the following:

  • Verbalising statements that are false
  • Verbalising statements that have an uncertain or disputable truthfulness
  • Verbalising statements that are sarcastic or exaggerated in nature
  • Verbally quoting or paraphrasing
  • Verbally using figurative language, such as similes and metaphors
  • Making any verbal statement pertaining to future events

In the event that these protocols are violated, and a growth event is not triggered, the offending individual is to be assigned duties that do not involve SCP-6924, nor any other anomalies that require similar forethought regarding the use of speech. In the event that a growth event occurs, the target is to be identified as soon as possible and immediately terminated, and the corpse is to be brought as close to SCP-6924's mass as can be safely achieved. In the event that the target cannot be identified, SCP-6924's security perimeter is to enter immediate lockdown until the the target has been confirmed to be terminated.

D-Class personnel are to be gagged to restrict all speech whilst being escorted to the allocated testing zone to undergo experimentation, the gag is only to be removed when the zone has been reached. Unless permission has been granted by Research Head Dr. Reitman, testing is to be conducted anywhere within SCP-6924’s volume to prevent SCP-6924 from extending. D-Class personnel are to be escorted to the test zone by at least two guards. Standard foundation issue hiking apparel is to be worn by both guards and D-class personnel whilst navigating SCP-6924 to prevent accident or injury. In the event that a D-Class test subject is terminated during experimentations, the remains are to immediately be destroyed through the application of a sufficiently strong acidic compound before experimentation continues. No further testing involving the creation of SCP-6924 targets is to be carried out [See Addendum SCP-6924-2].

Description: SCP-6924 is a gargantuan mass of plant matter of indeterminate species located in ██████, Tuscany, resembling a mass of tree roots featuring sporadically protruding thorns ranging in length between nine and fourteen inches. SCP-6924 seemingly requires no nutrition to survive, or else obtains nutrition through unknown means, as SCP-6924 is comprised solely of roots, as no leaves or any absorption of nutrients or water through the soil by the roots been observed.

If a statement is made that SCP-6924 determines to be false whilst located within a certain radius around SCP-6924, hereby referred to as its target range, SCP-6924 will begin to grow and spread rapidly at a rate of ten feet per second towards the person who made the statement, hereby referred to as the target, and will continue to do so even if the target leaves this radius. Whilst undergoing this period of growth, the roots of SCP-6924 will attempt to grasp the target and constrict them until they expire through restricting airflow, crushing the body, or through impalement or laceration from its thorns. If the target expires before they are reached, SCP-6924 will continue to extend towards the targets remains and, if possible, damage the target's body to the point that they would expire if alive. SCP-6924's target range currently consists of a five hundred foot circle surrounding SCP-XXXX's mass, though during growth events, the target range increases in size as SCP-6924 grows latitudinally and longitudinally. If an obstruction is placed between SCP-6924 and its target, SCP-6924’s roots will toss the obstruction aside, or destroy it by crushing it or weaving itself into the obstruction and forcing it apart. No current means of impeding the expansion of SCP-6924 has thus far been discovered. SCP-6924 has proven to be indestructible during experimentation involving the following measures:

  • Attempting to break or cut SCP-6924 through various means both conventional and anomalous in nature.
  • Attempting to burn SCP-6924.
  • Exposing SCP-6924 to various herbicides and corrosive materials.
  • Subjecting an area inhabited by SCP-6924 to a thaumaturgic ritual which destroys bacteria necessary for plant life to grow in the targeted area.
  • Voicing paradoxical statements in the presence of SCP-6924 [See Addendum SCP-6924-2].

SCP-6924 has been observed to respond to untruthful statements conveyed verbally, both through speech, as well as pre-recorded messages, In the latter case. SCP-6924 is observed to target the person who initially recorded the statement, ignoring the recording device itself entirely. This effect has not been observed to extend to any forms of non-audible methods of communication.

Extensive information of SCP-6924 has been revealed through the use of SCP-6924 itself, including that SCP-6924 is sentient and, when presented with statements of a figurative or sarcastic nature can choose whether or not to interpret the statement literally, and activate a growth event if it considers the statement to be false [See Addendum SCP-6924-1].

Addendum SCP-6924-1: Audio Transcript: SCP-6924’s primary anomalous property was discovered during testing conducted by Dr. Jones and Dr. Duchovny, who were tasked with extracting samples from SCP-6924 for genetic sequencing. A transcript of an audio excerpt recorded by the field researchers’ body cameras can be found below.

Begin Log:

Dr. Duchovny: Got something here, a white powder on the roots

[Dr. Jones makes a loud snorting sound using his nose. Dr. Duchovny bursts into laughter.]

Dr. Duchovny: Stop that, man! Alright, I'll grab some of this stuff. Take a sample of the tree and we'll get the hell out of here.

[Dr. Jones attempts to inject a needle into SCP-6924 to extract a sample of sap for genetic sequencing. After forcing the tip of the needle against one of SCP-6924's roots for about a minute in an attempt to pierce the bark, the needle snaps]

Dr. Jones: Shit, this thing is tough I'll give it that.

Dr. Duchovny: Let's sort it out back to the lab. Let’s pack this stuff up for now.

[Dr. Jones nudges Dr. Duchovny and gestures to one of SCP-6924’s roots, vaguely resembling a pair of buttocks.]

Dr. Jones: Hey, who does that remind you of?

Dr. Duchovny: I have no idea who you’re talking about.

Dr. Jones: She’s been throwing it at you, man.

Dr. Duchovny: Dr. Moore?

Dr. Jones: Bullseye!

Dr. Duchovny: Are you implying that there’s a sexual human being underneath that lab coat? Dr. Moore is a humourless ice queen.

[SCP-6924 immediately begins a growth event, constricting Dr. Duchovny around his waist and impaling him with several thorns.]

Dr. Jones: Shit! What’s happening?

Dr. Duchovny: My ribs…my ribs are broken! Shit, call for backup!

[SCP-6924 continues to constrict Dr. Duchovny for about ten seconds, at which point SCP-6924 ceases all movement.]

Analysis of the white powder found within SCP-6924 indicated it to be powdered human bone, presumed to have belonged to a prior target that had been crushed by SCP-6924.

It was hypothesised that SCP-6924 growth events are triggered by the vocalisation of statements made within a certain range of SCP-6924 that are untruthful. The initial growth event observed in SCP-6924 was prompted by Dr. Duchovny's comment about Dr. Moore, which SCP-6924 had interpreted literally. It was later confirmed by Dr. Moore that she had a romantic interest in Dr. Duchovny and had acted flirtatiously in the workplace. Experimentation involving D-Class personnel was authorized under the supervision of Dr. Reitman to determine if this hypothesis was true and, if so, test the extent of SCP-6924's knowledge.

Addendum SCP-6924-2: Experimentation Log:

Foreword: The following experiment was conducted to observe how SCP-6924 would react to proclamations that a true statement is false.
Subject: D-75193

Response: No movement of SCP-6924 detected.
Statement: That statement is false.
Response: D-75193 terminated by SCP-6924.

Foreword: The following experiment was conducted to observe how SCP-6924 would react to pre-recorded false statement being played back. D-75194 was instructed to speak a statement whilst located outside SCP-6924 containment perimeter. The recording device and D-75194 were brought into SCP-6924, after which the recorded message was played.
Subject: D-75194
Statement: The Earth is flat.
Response: D-75194 terminated by SCP-6924, which ignored the recording device completely.

Foreword: The following experiment was conducted to observe how SCP-6924 would react to a target that had been terminated through means other than SCP-6924 after a false statement was made.
Subject: D-75195
Statement: The Earth is flat.
[D-75195 was immediately terminated via remote detonation of an incendiary charge implanted at the base of the skull]
Reaction: SCP-6924 proceeded to constrict D-75195’s corpse, ceasing movement after it was constricted to a point that would cause death in a living human.

Foreword: This experiment was conducted to observe how SCP-XXXX would react to a target whose body was destroyed, such that SCP-6924 could not reasonably constrict the target in question.
Subject: D-75196
Statement: The Earth is flat.
[After making this statement, D-75196 immediately spoke an anomalous phrase they were instructed to speak which, when completed, reduces the speaker’s body to sludge through the rupturing of the cell walls, causing immediate termination]
Reaction: SCP-6924 experienced a growth event, ceasing movement upon its roots arriving at D-75196's remains.
