Special Containment Procedures: After seven decades of incubation in worldwide academia, containment of SCP-XXXX is functionally impossible. Its ongoing damage to the clarity of human communication can be partially ameliorated through the following actions:

  • covert promotion of direct, transparent rhetoric in the academy;
  • covert suppression of academic literature inspired by SCP-XXXX;
  • exposing new academics to the worst excesses of SCP-XXXX early in their careers.

This final approach has proved the most successful, as most young academics confronted with the opaque jargon of The Order of Things or Discipline and Punish are permanently alienated. University humanities professors and professional philosophers, conversely, are almost universally susceptible to the SCP-XXXX effect. Their low-to-nonexistent engagement with wider society, however, renders this result largely moot.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a transmissible memetic effect produced by the writings of French philosopher Paul-Michel Foucault (PoI-XXXX-1) or individuals inspired thereby. These writings, while technically and grammatically correct in most respects, produce almost instantaneous confusion and disorientation in most subjects when read. While the exceptional density of Foucault's prose (and the prose of his successors) is partially to blame for these effects, they frequently do not diminish with the passage of time and in extreme cases result in permanent loss of the ability to communicate clearly on the part of the reader. In academic contexts where clear communication is valued less than the appearance of deep thought and theoretical complexity, affected individuals can be elevated to tenured positions where they are able to unwittingly infect others with their viral proclivity for convoluted prattle.
