Item #: SCP-4842

Object class: Safe

Special containment procedures: SCP-4842 is to be chained up in an 8m by 8m by 8m room on a pedestal that is no less than 1.5m off the floor. The room is to be composed of standard drywall located in the safe class object containment wing of Site 19. It is to be decorated as if it were a library with SCP-4842 in the center. The chains holding SCP-4842 are to be locked with a simple combination lock. If the chains need to be unlocked, Dr. Ayla will send in a D- class with the combination. If the D- class attempts to open the book, they are to be terminated immediately. SCP-4842 has no way of moving on its own and any people under its influences won’t move. The chains are there strictly so people in the room won’t be able to open it if not under testing conditions. Any changes in the behavior of SCP-4842 is the be reported immediately to Dr. Ayla.

Description: SCP-4842 is a book entitled “The Tales of Turnabout“ the front cover of the book is leather bound with the title imprinted in gold-leaf style decoration. SCP-4842’s anomalous properties start when a sentient being opens SCP-4842, at which point the subject is not able to stop reading until finished. If the book is closed by any means, there will be no effects and the reader will be able to recall what they read. If the reader does read a certain amount of the book, the book will act as if the reader was woken up. The criteria for this to take place is still under investigation.

The story follows a character named Turnabout, who will now be referred to as SCP-4842-2, as he moves through the world of the book and “helps” his friends and loved ones in various tasks. Some of said tasks are removing a hornets nest from the head of another character named Mason, and another is pulling the impaled body of his wife, named Marie, out of a tree. As the story progresses it becomes more apparent that SCP-4842-2 is the origin of the problems in the story. The book ends with a picture of a tall dark figure staring out towards the reader with the words “you will be my new friend, you just need to join the others.” After finishing the book the reader will state that they are tired and attempt to find a place to sleep. If there are no places to sleep such as a bed or a couch, they will fall asleep standing up.

If the subject is woken up during their sleep, SCP-4842 will emit a black ink-like substance (SCP-4842-3) that will seek out the awoken subject. If allowed to reach them, it will fully encase them. The subject becomes petrified in place and is to be considered deceased. Further testing on SCP-4842-3 proved it to be ink commonly used in the 1860’s with no direct anomalous properties.

When allowed to sleep, the subjects of SCP-4842 will experience dreams approximately 7 nights 7-8 nights in a row. The dreams are described by test subjects as being very peaceful with SCP-4842-2 helping them with a task until the end where they die in a gruesome way and immediately wake up (Some subjects will experience memory loss if the injury is to the head). Victims of SCP-4842 will have minor bruising after these experiences. On the 7th 7th or 8th day the subject will experience the full effects of their death in the dream. After that, SCP-4842 will return to a dormant state. Further testing with remote drones has shown that the book is completely empty if there is no human presence within 50 meters.

Discovery: SCP-4842 was recovered from the home of the beard household in Arkansas, USA after police were called in by a neighbor to investigate a “weird” smell. The bodies of [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] Beard were found in the house. One was laid out on a bed with 48 stab wounds to the lower abdomen and the other was found in the living room with hundreds of wasp stings on his head. [REDACTED] Beard was still holding the book.

Test log: 4842-1
Scp-4842 was placed via remote drone into the cell of D-9847. When D-9847 woke up he was confused by SCP-4842 for approximately 1 minute before he couldn’t resist opening it anymore. After 10 minutes D-9847 finished reading the book and laid Down to go to sleep. D-9847 was asleep for 7 hours 24 minutes and 38 seconds before waking up again. D-9847 had a huge bruise on the left side of his face but when questioned about it, he said that he didn’t notice it. When questioned about the contents of SCP-4842 he stated that he hadn’t read a book in years. 5 days into the test, D-9847 woke up with a broken arm. His injuries were dealt with by foundation medical staff and testing was resumed. On the seventh night at 9:34 A.M., D-9847 exploded in his bed. Tests done on the remains show that a stick of dynamite was detonated in his abdominal cavity. The room was cleaned and SCP-4842 was returned to containment.

Test log: 4842-2
Scp-4842 was placed in the cell of D-6185. When D-6185 awoke he immediately began to examine Scp-4842. When finished, D-6185 was moved to an empty cell void of all furniture. D-6185 began to pace the cell until the subject eventually fell asleep standing up. Subject D-6185 was awoken with an alarm clock 3 hours after initial reading. Scp-4842 began secreting a black ooze SCP-4842-3. SCP-4842-3 began pooling towards the direction of D-6185, and when Scp-4842 was closed, SCP-4842-3 stopped moving and became in-animate. Subject D-6185 was then returned to his cell. 8 days 6 hours 53 minutes after testing began D-6185 was declared deceased. The wounds on D-6185 seem to point towards the cause of death having been hit repeatedly with a comically large mallet.

Test log: 4842-3
D-8564 was allowed entry into SCP-4842’s containment cell. D-8564 was immediately drawn to SCP-4842. The chains holding SCP-4842 were unlocked earlier by D-8563 and she was immediately terminated when she attempted to open the book. D-8564 began reading the book. After about 10 minutes, D-8564 began the search for a resting place. He fell asleep in a reading chair and was asleep for 7 hours and 37 minutes. After the first night, D-8564 was questioned about the contents of the book. He mentioned all parts of the book that were known up to this point, but there were two new parts. D-8564 described a character named Ben who died from an explosion. He claimed to read about SCP-4842-2 showing him how to safely light fireworks. But SCP-4842-2 dropped the stick of dynamite into his mouth and Ben swallowed it. The explosion occurred in his abdomen.

The second new part of the book was about a character named Isaias. Scp-4842-2 was teaching him to play whack-a-mole but ended up smashing him with the hammer. D-8564 was allowed the rest of the 7 day period to be in his cell. On the 7th day, D-8564 was found in his bed and was cut in 3 with the cuts being on his neck and knees. It is theorized he was run over by a train. This test is currently being reviewed by Dr. Ayla to confirm that subjects killed by SCP-4842 are written into the story for the next person to read about.

Update: 4842-1
After review from Dr. Ayla, it was confirmed that the characters Ben and Isaias were D-9847 and D-6185.
