Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures:

SCP-XXXX is to be contained in a small glass case with single hole open allowing for hot air to rise out. Sensors are to constantly measure the temperature of both the glass and ambient air of the containment area. If temperatures of either reach above 1000 degrees Celsius dry ice is to be inserted into the containment area1 until temperatures cool to below 500 degrees Celsius. Personnel are to remain at least 5 meters away from SCP-XXXX's containment area at all times. Fans, air pumps and other forceful methods of airflow are not to be used for cooling.

Description:
SCP-XXXX is a matte black candle with three wicks in its wax. The sides of XXXX are completely smooth except for the phase "In the Dark, Immortality Awaits." The 3 wicks inside SCP-XXXX are constantly alight with flames, extinguishing momentarily when blown out. The time it takes SCP-XXXX to relight so far appears random and no mechanism of how SCP-XXXX accomplishes this has been discovered. The force of air required to extinguish SCP-XXXX reduces with time, eventually even the softest breeze can extinguish the flames on SCP-XXXX. The instance of SCP-XXXX contained by the foundation is currently believed to be the only instance in existence.

Containment procedures primary focus is to reduce airflow and human contact around SCP-XXXX.

Addendum 001: Discovery
SCP-XXXX was first discovered in Bright, Australia on 25/01/2020 when local authorities responded to a hysterical call from a teenage girl. The fourteen year old reported that she and her friends were playing the sleepover game "Bloody Mary" when they were allegedly attacked by an entity. Two of the six girls suffered fatal injuries. During the investigation a local policeman attempted to blow out SCP-XXXX, only managing to blow out a single wick. Following this an entity that was described as a black shadow appeared in the bathroom and attempted to assault the policeman leading to the foundations involvement. Amnestics were provided to all individuals involved and the hoax of a murderer was fabricated to cover up SCP-XXXX.

Journal Entry 001: Dr H Maxwell
Have been assigned a new SCP today, a candle with some anomalous properties. SCP-XXXX appears to summon an entity that is openly hostile, should make for some interesting tests. Tomorrow will be phase 1 of testing, sending in the D Class to see what the hell this thing is.

Experiment 001: Initial Testing

Interview 001
Dr H Maxwell: "Why is it you want to be around the candle?"

Axel: "It isn't finished. I need to finish it."

Dr H Maxwell: "How will you finish it?"

Axel: "There is more to it, it needs more. It is so rough and imperfect, I must fix it."

Subject becomes increasingly agitated.

Dr H Maxwell: "What can you tell me about the phrase, 'In the Dark, Immortality awaits?' "

Axel: "It needs to be finished first. It must be fine and perfect to show its secrets."

Interview ends as subject repeats the phrase, "make it perfect."

Journal Entry 002: Dr H Maxwell
Conducted an interview with the D Class used for testing. I was recently informed that Axel was terminated. He grew increasingly distressed away from SCP-XXXX and assaulted a guard. Mental effects of the candle are still unknown. Had a visit from the site director today regarding SCP-XXXX. Uncovering the meaning behind the text on the candle should be made a priority. Testing resumes tomorrow.

Experiment 003: Successful Test

Can't stop thinking about SCP-XXXX. What does the phrase on its side mean? What is SCP-XXXX-1? It mentioned being perfect but the candle itself has been called imperfect, why? So many questions. I couldn't sleep last night, something about the darkness felt unsettling. Turning the lights on helped ease my anxiety but then I couldn't sleep with them on…

Sleep alludes me. My behavior is being monitored, I can feel it. My obsession with SCP-XXXX is growing stronger but I have to keep going. I need to know what the phrase, In the Dark, Immortality Awaits means. Why did the last D Class mention the O5's? Is there something they aren't telling us? I need to pull it together otherwise I risk being kicked off this assignment. I have a new theory about SCP-XXXX, if I can prove it they'll have to let me stay on. I know I can work this out.

Experiment 007: Successful Test

Journal Entry 005: Dr H Maxwell
My breakthrough has earned me back the respect of my peers. Now that the pattern of SCP-XXXX has been found it will be easier to test and discover all of its effects. My sleeping pills have stopped working, last night I was restless. Had another visit form the site director. He informed me that the O5 council themselves are pleased with my progress however they still wish to know about the phrase on the side on the candle. I overstepped and asked why they wanted to know so bad, I couldn't help myself. The site director reminded me of my place in the foundation and cautioned me not to overstep again.
