Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-XXXX is to be held in isolation inside a standard containment locker at Biological Containment Site-661. All Foundation personnel in direct interaction with SCP-XXXX instances must follow Biohazard Safety Level-3 procedures and must have at least Level-2 security clearance. Removal of SCP-XXXX samples for study requires Level-4 security clearance.

Carriers of SCP-XXXX [hereafter referred to as SCP-XXXX-1 instances] are to be held in isolation within individual Humanoid Containment Units at Biological Containment Site-66. The walls of these containment units must be lined with silver and no less than four armed guards are to be present at all times. Foundation physicians are to remain on standby to administer intravenous silver-based antiviral medication, anti-depressants and anxiety medication to SCP-XXXX-1 instances.

In the event of a breach by an SCP-XXXX-1 instance, silver-based sedatives should be used to suppress the entity. After which, the SCP-XXXX-1 instance must be promptly relocated to a more secure containment unit. Termination of SCP-XXXX-1 instances must only be executed as a last resort.

Any personnel infected with SCP-XXXX are to be contained and held for observation.

Description:
SCP-XXXX is a virus of genus Romulus lycanthrovirus that induces lycanthropic transformations in human subjects. Tests conducted on SCP-XXXX instances have determined that the virus' molecular structure resembles that of the Rabies virus family. Tests have also shown that instances of SCP-XXXX are unable to survive in open, ventilated environments, outside of their hosts. Researchers have also discovered that exposure to no less than 0.00125mg of silver elicits an averse reaction from SCP-XXXX instances. This information has been instrumental in the development of antiviral treatments and sedatives for suppressing symptoms and transformations caused by SCP-XXXX. However, SCP-XXXX remains incurable by current means.

SCP-XXXX is transmitted via bites and scratches from SCP-XXXX-1 instances, as well as through contact with bodily fluids secreted by said instances during sexual intercourse. On average, SCP-XXXX has a three-month incubation period, wherein it remains undetectable within SCP-XXXX-1 instances.2 During this time, the virus will spread throughout the bodies of its hosts from the site of infection until it begins to affect the hosts' nervous systems.

Following the incubation period, SCP-XXXX-1 instances will begin to display two or more of the following symptoms:

  • Abrupt mood swings, accompanied by increased anxiety and impulsive, often violent, behaviour
  • Frequent and intense hunger, with a specific craving for large amounts of meat. In extreme cases, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 have been observed to develop cannibalistic tendencies.
  • An irrational aversion to objects made of silver
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Visual and Auditory Hallucinations

Symptoms will intensify as SCP-XXXX spreads throughout its hosts' bodies.

The most visible changes in instances of SCP-XXXX-1 occur on the night of the first full moon following SCP-XXXX's incubation period. Thereafter, said changes will repeat under similar conditions, every 29-30 days. The correlation between instances of SCP-XXXX-1 transformations and the full moon is not fully understood.

After ten (10) to 30 minutes of exposure to moonlight during the aforementioned event, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 will start to violently convulse. After which, SCP-XXXX-1 instances will begin to aggressively tear apart their own clothing and skin. The screams vocalized by SCP-XXXX-1 instances, as well as the rapid and extensive blood loss that occurs, indicate that the transformation process is extremely painful.

On average, the process last between 45 seconds to two (2) minutes and does not cease until SCP-XXXX-1 instances have torn off an estimated 85-97% of their skin. At this point, the physical appearance of SCP-XXXX-1 instances will resemble that of a large, deformed bipedal canine of the Canis lupus species, to varying degrees. There are instances where entities have been observed to have lost all semblance to their previous state or to have grown additional heads and limbs. As such, transformed instances of SCP-XXXX-1 do not have homogeneous appearances in relation to each other or in relation to their previous transformations. In addition, subjects' body mass tends to increase by a factor of 0.5 by the end of their transformation.

Once transformed, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 seem to lose their capacity for human communication. Concurrently, their vocalizations become comparable to that of members of the Canis lupus species. Efforts to reason with SCP-XXXX-1 instances have yielded no favourable results as of yet. Rather, subjects tend to display extremely violent and aggressive behaviour, particularly towards human targets. As well, there appears to be no discernible motive for this behaviour other than to consume the flesh of their targets.3 In 74% of cases analyzed, this resulted in the expiration of SCP-XXXX-1's targets. In the remaining 26% of cases, however, victims of SCP-XXXX-1 instances' attacks contracted instances of SCP-XXXX.

While transformed, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 exhibit enhanced strength, enhanced durability, enhanced speed, endurance, reflexes and sensory capabilities. SCP-XXXX-1 entities also exhibit high levels of pain tolerance as well as the ability to regenerate from various injuries, including but not limited to third degree burns, dismemberment, impalement, gunshots, and disembowelment. Complete regeneration from these injuries have been observed to take as little as 60 seconds. This is noticeably inconsistent with the physiological capabilities typical of members of either the Homo sapiens or Canis lupus species. Research into this phenomenon is ongoing.

Despite the above mentioned, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 appear to be susceptible to termination by drowning, oxygen deprivation, decapitation, and, most notably, injuries inflicted by implements made of silver. Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 can also be terminated by any number of conventional means before they transform or after they have reverted. However, once transformation has started, SCP-XXXX-1 instances can only be terminated by the aforementioned specified methods.

Instances of SCP-XXXX-1 will remain in their transformed state until sunrise or until their hunger has been satiated. At this point, they will revert to their human form by instantaneously shedding their fur and skin. Afterwards, SCP-XXXX-1 instances will immediately lose consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are unable to recall what transpired during or after their metamorphosis, prior to reversion. This subsequent lack of self-awareness tends to result in increased short-term anxiety for the subject and clinical depression in the long-term.

Microbiological assessments of the cells of SCP-XXXX-1 instances reveal that their cellular structure prior to metamorphosis and after reversion appear to be consistent with that of typical members of the Homo sapiens species. While transformed, however, the cells of SCP-XXXX-1 instances appear to be indistinguishable from that of members of the Canis lupus species, with SCP-XXXX being noticeably absent from SCP-XXXX-1 instances' bodies during this time. Researchers have not yet deduced the cause of this phenomenon.

Foundation researchers hypothesize that instances of SCP-XXXX infection may account for numerous reported public sightings of lycanthropic humanoids in the ████████ region. However, there have been no conclusive findings to support this hypothesis. Research into SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-1 instances continues.4

Addendum:
SCP-XXXX was first brought to the attention of The Foundation on ██/██/████, by two field agents operating out of ████████, ███████. The agents discoveres the anomaly during the investigation of an unusual murder case by the ████████ Police Department's CSI Unit.

According to official police reports, residents of the ███████ Community were prompted to investigate the property of the ██████ family due to a foul odour coming from the premises. This was in lieu of the family's prolonged absence. On entering the small suburban dwelling, the residents found four (4) partially decomposed cadavers belonging to members of the household. They alerted the police afterward.

The bodies were severely mutilated and covered with what seemed to be scratches and bite marks from a large animal. Forensic tests were conducted on blood samples obtained from the scene. These tests led to the discovery of SCP-XXXX.

The whereabouts of █████ ██████, one of the family's teenage twin daughters, were unknown at the time when the corpses were found. However, she gave herself over to police custody nine (9) days later. Various tests were subsequently done and high levels of SCP-XXXX were found in the blood stream of the accosted. The police then transferred custody of the accosted over to The Foundation, in addition to all extant samples of SCP-XXXX instances in their possession.

The accosted, █████ ██████ [codename: "Romulus-Zero"], is the first documented instance of SCP-XXXX-1, and is currently being held in a Humanoid Containment Unit at Biological Containment Site-66. 73 instances of SCP-XXXX-1 have since been tracked, located and detained.
