Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be held in one of Site-88's section C standard anomalous object storage units, requiring level two clearance to access. No personnel are allowed to trigger SCP-XXXX-2 events without the approval of at least two level 3 research staff.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a worn, leather bound encyclopedia with dimensions of approximately 26 cm tall, 13 cm wide, and 5 cm thick, labelled "Nicholas Williams' Encyclopedia of Everything". When attempting to read SCP-XXXX the subject will open the book to a random page, read it, and set the book down again. Invariably, the information obtained from SCP-XXXX will be used by the subject to escape a cenario, in which they would otherwise have died, it is at this time believed that these events are caused by SCP-XXXX, and are referred to as SCP-XXXX-1 events. SCP-XXXX has given subjects knowledge of other anomalous objects and their current status beyond what the foundation has access to. Requests to use SCP-XXXX to gain knowledge of other anomalous objects is pending 05 approval.
Should a subject read SCP-XXXX multiple times before the occurrence of a SCP-XXXX-1 event, they will read the same page and will trigger a SCP XXXX-2 event to occur in place of the SCP-XXXX-1 event. This is similar to SCP-XXXX-1 events, however the primary difference is that while SCP-XXXX-1 only threatens the life of the individual who read SCP-XXXX, an occurrence of SCP-XXXX-2 will threaten the life of the individual who read SCP-XXXX, and one other person. Each time an individual reads SCP-XXXX without SCP-XXXX-1 or -2 occuring, the amount of threatened people doubles. The other noticeable difference between SCP-XXXX-1 events and -2 events is that while in every recorded occurrence of SCP XXXX-1 the affected individual survives, in SCP-XXXX-2 those who are not affected by SCP-XXXX will die unless the individual affected by SCP-XXXX is able to intervene.
Addendum SCP-XXXX was acquired from a R█████ L██████, formerly a mythology professor at harvard university, who had been using SCP-XXXX frequently, creating large shifts in various world governmental powers as well as the prevention of a potentially LK class cenario, in which a large portion of human life would be rendered sterile. He was apprehended along with SCP-XXXX whilst attempting to enter site 88. R█████ L██████ Is now under foundation custody and is assisting in the research of SCP-XXXX, as an alternative to becoming D-class.
Interviewed: R█████ L██████
Interviewer: assistant director of security Carlos Gonzales
Foreword: R█████ L██████ was found inside site 88 wearing torn and burnt clothes, covered in and clutching SCP-XXXX, attempting to find a high level staff member. He was quickly apprehended once security was alerted to the situation. He was stripped of his belongings and given a standard D-class jumpsuit. Upon apprehension assistant director of security Carlos Gonzales was contacted to determine what to do with R█████ L██████.
<Begin Log> July 08 2007 1:38 AM-15 minutes after apprehension
Gonzales: "Let's get straight to the point. I know you're a civilian professor. I know you've been behaving erratically for the past 3 months. I know four days ago your house was destroyed, and you and one of your colleagues disappeared completely up until now, where you show up breaking into a facility you shouldn't know exist, with a passcode for a door only one person on this planet knows the location of, quite literally begging to me apprehended, and your colleague that disappeared alongside you is nowhere to be found. You're a distraction. Where's your partner?"
R█████ L██████: "Je-Jefferson. He- He's not with… with me. He's dead. They ki- they killed him… I'm by- by myself."
R█████ L██████ appears to have difficulty speaking and sitting upright at this point.
Gonzales: "Likely story. If what your saying is true then why and how are you here?"
R█████ L██████: "I'm here because" cough "Because of the book… please just lock up the book, don't let anyone read it. I don't care what happens to me anymore, just lock it up and don't let anyone read it, that's what you guys do right?"
Gonzales: "What's so special about this book that you would throw your life away to get rid of it?"
R█████ L██████: "I- It makes you a-a… a hero. But if… if you don't… don't…"
At this point R█████ L██████ falls over and passes out from dehydration, exhaustion, and his burn wounds.
Gonzales: sigh "Get him medical treatment, we'll need to question him when he recovers, and keep his belongings in the box they're currently in and keep an eye on them, we don't know what this book can do, the whole thing could be lethal. Keep searching the facility and reinforce security. God it's too early for this, I need some coffee."
Closing Statement: Mr.L██████ was taken to the site's medical ward for treatment immediately following this interview. Following the interview all of Mr.L██████'s belongings were temporarily put in a vacant standard euclid containment cell in section C and put under surveillance. No other breakins were detected and no anomalies or equipment were stolen or tampered with, this lends more credence to Mr.L██████'s story.
Interviewed: R█████ L██████
Interviewer: on site therapist Alex Chase
Foreword: R█████ L██████ made a partial recovery in site 88's medical ward, on site therapist Alex Chase is sent to interview him. It was determined that too much stress would be detrimental to his condition and Dr.Chase was warned to keep him calm and avoid topics that might agitate him.
<Begin Log> July 10 2007 3:45 PM- 3 days after apprehension
Dr.Chase: "Hello, My name is Alex Chase, you can call me Alex if you like. I'm here to ask you a few questions and maybe answer a few of yours. Let's start with how you know about us in the first place and how you got in, not every day a civilian just walks in here, waltzes around and passes out."
R█████ L██████: "Hi, uh, Alex. to answer you first question, I know about this place and how to get in from the book I brought with me, I read about this place in it about a year ago. I didn't want to believe it was real when I did though. I didn't want to believe that the things you hold here are real. I wish I still didn't believe it, but it's kind of hard to deny while actually being here."
Dr.Chase: "That's actually a fairly normal response, I'd be more concerned if you didn't. So what does this book do exactly? You mentioned something about it "making you a hero" before you passed out."
R█████ L██████: "Yeah. When you read it you gain information that will make you a hero, the more you read though, the bigger the hero you'll be. That's how it was explained to me at least. I sure don't feel like much of a hero though."
R█████ L██████ sits in silence for a moment and then laughs to himself quietlyDr.Chase: "Is everything okay Mr.L██████?"
R█████ L██████: "yeah, it's just, I realized something. All my favorite stories and myths were never the ones that ended in happy ever after, I always liked tragedies where the hero loses everything. Ironic isn't it?"
Dr.Chase: "Heh, I suppose it is. Still, they were heroes nonetheless. You did a good thing, bringing this book to us, I want you to know that."
R█████ L██████: "Thank you, I can't help but wonder what you people will do to me once you get this information out of me though."
Dr.Chase: "I-I'm not sure,
R█████ L██████: "I got it at this weird underground auction one of my students, hid name was Harold, told me about hosted by some charity foundation, Manna I think they called themselves. Well, it wasn't exactly an auction, it was closer to a flea market the way they had it set up, with a bunch of small stands selling different stuff, all of it was, uh, what do you people call it, 'anomalous' all of it seemed pretty harmless, especially compared to the stuff contained here, but that might have just been false marketing, in fact I'm almost sure it was considering what I got. I wasn't originally planning on buying anything from it, just look around and make sure that Harold didn't get in any trouble… God damn it, he was such a good kid, he didn't deserve what happened…
R█████ L██████ remains silent for 53 seconds, Dr.Chase also remained silent and allowed him to recollect himself.
"We were walking around and there was a stand full of books, the guy running it said he could tell the kind of man I was, that I loved legends and myths of heros dashing in and saving the day, that this book could fulfil my wildest dreams and make me into one of them. Evidently he was right on all accounts."
Dr.Chase: "Why are you telling me all of this? That was a lot more than I asked you for."
R█████ L██████: "Guess I just need to get this stuff off my chest. talking about it helps, ya know."
Dr.Chase: "I think I do. Would you like to continue your story then? I'd probably be able to answer most of these questions if you do."
R█████ L██████: "Yeah. That sounds like a good idea."
