Item #: SCP-4341
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures:

SCP-4341 is sensitive to light and heat. Due to its unique physical form it must be stored in a clear, air-tight, container.

Transparent polycarbonate food storage containers recycled from SCP Foundation break rooms / cafeterias are traditionally used to contain SCP-4341. However, the material that the storage container is constructed of is unimportant as long as it is large enough to physically contain the anomaly and can be fully sealed (i.e. if a polycarbonate storage container is not readily available, a clear glass jar could be substituted).

Any container SCP-4341 is stored in must be vacuum-sealed, clearly labeled and placed in a well-lit secure, room.

All SCP personnel at facilities containing SCP-4341 specimens must be equipped with belt-holstered flashlights at all times in case of lighting failure or nocturnal containment breach.

SCP-4341 presents high risk of strangulation and suffocation to humans if sufficient hair fibers are available. SCP-4341 should not be handled without proper protective equipment. SCP PPE #10-A protective garb is recommended.

Description:

SCP-4341 is a terrestrial swarm of black, sand-like grains that congeal around large quantities of human hair fiber. The anomaly infests dead hair and twists it into dense ropes that allow the swarm to create different physical shapes (most commonly, exaggeratedly large humanoid figures or whip-like tentacles) that allow it to interact with its environment (e.g. it has been observed using rope-like appendages to quickly wrap around sign posts).

The ability of SCP-4341 to create unique physical forms to adapt to its given environment makes it potentially dangerous if the containment procedures listed above are not adhered to (e.g. SCP-4341 has been observed twisting millions of strands of hair into ropes greater than 45 feet in length and snaking through entire plumbing systems causing them to flood).

Apart from scraping sounds made by the writhing, rope-like appendages formed when SCP-4341 has access to sufficient hair fiber, it is otherwise completely silent. Due to its photosensitivity, SCP-4341 is only active in darkness. These properties afford SCP-4341 a strong element of stealth, allowing it to grow to extremely large proportions if left unchecked.

When allowed to reach large sizes, SCP-4341 presents imminent danger to human life. It has been documented ensnaring and constricting human adults to the point of asphyxiation.

SCP-4341 demonstrates primitive intelligence and dynamically reacts to changes in environmental stimuli. Its behavior is unpredictable and – currently— poorly understood.

Addendum:

It is unknown how / where SCP-4341 initially spawned. In the 1940s it was commonly spotted by Nazi S.S. Officers at concentration camps throughout Central Europe, congealing around large quantities of hair shaved from the heads of prisoners. Due to the large amount of available hair fiber at such locations, SCP-4341 was observed on at least two occasions creating forms large enough to destroy small structures and cause injury to guards and prisoners. Due to the technological limitations of night vision photography, the phenomenon was long thought to have been something of an urban legend, facetiously referred to as “Haarrmonster” in mail correspondence between S.S. officers.

If caught in direct light, SCP-4341 immediately disperses, abandoning any hair fibers and returning to the form of a granular swarm that retreats to the nearest dark location. If unable to find a dark location to shelter within, SCP-4341 will lay dormant appearing as black grains of sand.

To date, SCP-4341 has only been documented manipulating human hair. Animal hair and other hair-like fibers (e.g. twine, nylon, etc.) are not of interest to it.

SCP-4341 does not utilize “living hair,” it only manipulates hair that has already been cut or shaved.

SCP-4341 is highly susceptible to direct exposure to fire.
