SCP-3799: A Brief History of Snowfall (declassification draft)
Section 1: Introduction
Author: Tufto
Preliminary note: This declassification consists of two parts. The first will summarize and explain the story of SCP-3799 in-universe, and the second will be a literary analysis of the deeper themes and ideas of SCP-3799, as I understood them.
Section 2: Narrative Explanation
Item Number: SCP-3799
Object Class: Safe
„Cognitohazard“ means that SCP-3799 has an anomalous effect on human subjects which is incurred by perceiving it with one of the five senses. „Daevite“ refers to an anomalous historical cvilization called the Daevites, which was introduced in SCP-140, An Incomplete Chronicle, a book which rewrites the timeline to allow their civilization to survive longer throughout history . Their culture is characterised by matriarchy, imperialism, slavery, human sacrifice and rituals with anomalous properties, and the Foundation is opposed to their reemergence in the modern world. The Daevites are incidental to this article, so further information about their civilization and related anomalies is not required to understand this article. The tag „foundation-made“ is especially interesting, since unlike some other groups of interest, such as Dr Wondertainment, the Factory and the Church of the Broken God, the Foundation is usually concerned with containing anomalies rather than producing them, so this implies that the Foundation either created SCP-3799 inadvertantly, or with the purpose of containing another anomaly or fufilling some other essential function. Since SCP-3799 is categorized as Safe rather than Thaumiel, the latter seems unlikely. „Paradox“ implies that SCP-3799 has some relation to time travel or alternate timelines, so we should keep track of any discrepancies in the timeline of events.
Let us move on to the main article. There isn't anything remarkable about the Special Containment Procedures, they mostly consist of people, including Foundation staff, being kept away from Crosier Island, where the object is presumably located, and having their memories erased if necessary. The description reads as follows:
"Description: SCP-3799 is a perfect sphere composed entirely of snow and with a circumference of exactly 6 metres. SCP-3799 is suspended without visible means of support at a height of 500 metres over Crozier Island, Greenland. Crozier Island is the location of Site-799, a site devoted to experimental research."
This section should be mostly self-explanatory. Keep in mind the word „perfect“, as it will carry thematical significance throughout the article. Also, the nature of Site-799 ties in with the „foundation-made“ tag, as it implies that SCP-3799 was created during an experiment by the Foundation. The SCP has another component:
"Contained within SCP-3799 is SCP-3799-1, the corpse of an adult male human wearing what appears to be an unknown variant of a Foundation uniform."
The unknown Foundation uniform implies that -1 was an employee of a version of the Foundation from a parallel universe or an alternate timeline, the presence of the paradox tag lending more credence to the latter.
"SCP-3799-1's right arm protrudes out of SCP-3799, and was formerly holding a number of documents which have since been recovered. The cause of death of SCP-3799-1 is believed to have been from blood loss, apparently the result of self-inflicted wounds to the wrists."
We do not yet have an explanation for the death of -1, and the documents will appear later.
"Scans of SCP-3799 show that it posesses an abnormally low Hume field. Attempts to penetrate or harm SCP-3799 or SCP-3799-1 have all resulted in failure."
A Hume is a fictional unit of measurement named after the Scottish empiricist and sceptical philosopher David Hume, and it measures the level of reality. So for example reality benders have abnormally high Hume fields, and areas where reality breaks down, such as SCP-3001, have abnormally low levels. This implies that SCP-3799 is in some way unreal or doesn't belong to baseline reality, which is further confirmed by its impenetrability.
"SCP-3799 first appeared on 24/12/1987, during an experiment in Site-799 forming part of Project [FURTHER INFORMATION EXPUNGED ON ORDER OF O5-█]."
Confirming our suspicions, we discover that SCP-3799 appeared on Christmas Eve 1987 in an experiment which is part of a top-secret Foundation project. So far SCP-3799 is a very enigmatic object, but lacking any very interesting anomalous properties. The anomaly also fails to display any cognitohazardous effects. The heavy security measures at Crosier Island, the secrecy surrounding the mentioned research project, the hints of an alternate timeline and the death of -1, do indicate that SCP-3799 might be more important or dangerous than it seems at first sight. However, there is a collapsible at the bottom of the article.
"FURTHER INFORMATION RESTRICTED TO THE O5 COUNCIL AND AUTHORISED PERSONNEL ONLY"
Beneath the collapsible there are to be found the aforementioned recovered documents, which are previous iterations of the SCP-3799 document, revealing this to be a multi-iteration SCP in the vein of SCP-2998.
"The following documents are those recovered from SCP-3799-1. They are apparently 5 iterations of the file for SCP-3799, although no such iterations have ever been found in the Foundation's database. Because of the sensitive information contained in these documents, their contents are restricted to the O5 Council and specifically authorised personnel only. The information contained within these documents has caused Project Midwinter to be immediately discontinued, and the present containment measures to be implemented"
The information within the documents is restriced to the highest clearance level, the O-5 Council, and has led to the discontinuation of Project Midwinter, which is implied to be the expunged project mentioned in the description. Another significant detail is the absence of these documents in the Foundation archives, strenghtening the alternate timeline theory.
Document 3799-1
This document is a standard SCP file for SCP-3799, but the object class is now Euclid, and the Special Containment Procedures are significantly different.
"Special Containment Procedures: No access to Crozier Island is permitted, for either staff or civilians, with the exception of the research team at Site-799. Several Foundation craft are to patrol the perimeter for any unwanted intruders. Any unauthorised personnel, be they civilian or staff, attempting to enter Crozier Island are to be issued with the appropriate amnestics to erase any unusual knowlege or interest in SCP-3799."
In this iteration, the research conducted at Site-799 is still active, and the last line alludes to possible cognitohazardous properties of SCP-3799, which are confirmed in the following paragraphs.
"All members of the research team at Site-799 are to remain within Site-799. Food and other necessary supplies are to be delivered to them remotely. Members of the research team are only to be allowed to remain on site for 2 months in any one stretch, and must take a holiday of at least 1 month in an area with low precipitation before being allowed to return to active duty."
"Any personnel exhibiting cognitohazardous symptoms thought to originate from prolonged exposure to SCP-3799-1 are to be quarantined and removed from Site-799 immediately."
Precipitation refers to meteorological phenomena consisting of water falling from clouds towards the ground, such as rain, snow or hail. Remember that the description of the main article says the SCP-3799 is made of snow. There are also significant changes in the description.
"Description: SCP-3799 is a meterological phenomenon affecting Crozier Island, Greenland. The island and an area stretching 0.5km away from it are perpetually undergoing precipitation of a substance identical to snow on a molecular level but which displays significant anomalous properties. This substance is known as SCP-3799-1."
