Description:

SCP-4540 is a NIOSH approved air purifying respirator (hereby known as gas mask) that can protect against biological and chemical exposures, in addition to nuisance dust such as pm20. However, this particular gas mask has pre-existing incidents in regards to a single floor townhouse, a family of 3 in Appleton, WI, and a Leicester Longwool Sheep. Root cause analysis is inconclusive, but the catastrophic events of the 1995 Appleton Incident are believed by many to be linked to the usage of this gas mask.

The first documented account of the mask was 11/20/1994 from a small posting in the local Appleton Gazette, wherein a certain Charles “Chuck” Barstow inquires if anyone had a need for a high quality gas mask, stating that he would part with one for a reasonable price. The next historical mention was not until 04/15/95 with the news coverage of the Appleton Incident.

Police arrived early that morning per request of a concerned neighbor who claimed they heard gunshots on the property. When they opened the door, they discovered the deceased Chuck Barlick and his 5 year old daughter Blanch with a .22 gage bullet wound through the scapula. Forensics determined that Chuck had shot his daughter, then hit his head on a sharp concrete edge of a step, killing him within moments. Further investigation of the house revealed that there was a sheep locked in the bathroom with a gas mask strapped on to its face. The lieutenant at the scene, Lt. Eric Brown, observed the sheep and exclaimed “Shit’s Haunted”, to which his squad all agreed with enthusiasm. The mask was removed and sent to the SCP for further analysis.
Efforts to analyze the chemical makeup and physical properties of the mask have been thus far unsuccessful, as any employee who is tasked with retrieving the mask has widened their eyes and shaken their heads in disagreement. The gas mask will remain in the cell until further notice, and special instructions have been given to all employees at new hire orientation to not allow sheep into the property without written consent from the Operations Manager.
