Item #: SCP-4466

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: Any further instances of SCP-4466 sighted, should be immediately reported to the Foundation, whereon, the parent site of the instance will be shut down temporarily or permanently to remove any trace of the characters responsible. Any affected individuals should be reported to the Foundation as well, where they will be held for testing or until they no longer exhibit symptoms of SCP-4466 infection. If the instance persists after the wipe, in any way, the website in question should be immediately and permanently shut down.

Any subjects who no longer exhibit symptoms of SCP-4466 infection after having exhibited symptoms, can be released to normal conditions under close examination of the Foundation for a minimum of 24 months. After this period of observation, should the subject continue exhibiting no signs of SCP-4466 infection, they can be released from observation. If the subject relapses into patterns associated with SCP-4466 infection, they should be immediately detained for further study.

Description: SCP-4466 is a string of seemingly random Unicode characters (ranging in length from 16 to 54) that when entered into a text box of any kind, exhibit anomalous properties of infection and reproduction upon any individual that views them. There are 4 known instances of these character chains, SCP-4466-1, SCP-4466-2, SCP-4466-3, and SCP-4466-4 (see addendum).

Any individual (excluding the visually impaired or mentally undeveloped) who views the string of characters in it's entirety, will then become SCP-4466-Xa (where X is the instance of SCP-4466 that is viewed). SCP-4466-Xa (referred to further as "infected") specimens are in no danger of harm or death due to the disease. Infected individuals have no memory of SCP-4466 and have no response to further sightings of the instance when not in the presence an electronic text medium (text box, etc). When an infected individual is within the presence of an electronic text medium and has knowledge of that medium, they will have the near-irresistible compulsion to enter the alt codes1 or other text pattern responsible for creating the instance of SCP-4466-X. This will in turn, in all likelihood, create more instances of SCP-4466-Xa.

Notable instances of SCP-4466 (and the response of the Foundation to them) are responsible for such incidents as the www.youtube.com shut down of Tuesday, 10/16/2018, and the google outage of Friday, 8/16/2013 (see addendum).

Addendum: Below you will find an organizational list describing each instance of SCP-4466, it's consequences, and the characters responsible.

  • SCP-4466-1
    • Character chain: ████████████████████████████████████.
    • SCP-4466-1 was the first instance of SCP-4466 ever reported, though earlier occurrences that died naturally are likely to have occurred before it. The Foundation response to SCP-4466-1 resulted in the 5 minute shut down of www.google.com on August 16th of 2013, when the Foundation was reported to an instance of SCP-4466-1a within google staff. They somehow came across SCP-4466-1 while working and became entranced, typing the Unicode chain into every text box they had access to, including but not limited to google source code and search result data. The Foundation acted fast, apprehending the instance and shutting down google for a clearing of any trace of the Unicode for SCP-4466-1.
  • SCP-4466-2

*Character chain: ████████████████████████████████████████████████████████.
