SCP-3711
Object Class- Euclid, pending Keter classification.
Containment procedure- SCP-3711 is currently uncontained, no known containment method yet exists that would have any effect in the event SCP-3711 becomes free. SCP-3711 although uncontained has shown no major change in [REDACTED] years since the last anomalous event, therefore it has been decided that the best approach is to monitor SCP-3711 visually using LIDAR imaging as well as using ground penetrating RIDAR to monitor the ice below the surface of SCP-3711 for any sudden change or change that doesn't fit the current cycle. The global misinformation campaign surrounding SCP-3711 is also to be maintained, operatives have been embedded in various space agencies around the world to keep focus off SCP-3711 and to make it appear an unviable research and exploration target.
As of [REDACTED] no manned or unmanned missions to SCP-3711 are to be carried out until further information is available and the exact nature of SCP-3711 is properly understood. ( See incident report 3711-1 )
Description- SCP-3711 is a celestial being of unknown origin that is trapped inside Europa, one of four of the Galilean moons of Jupiter. SCP-3711 is in almost all cases 100% covered in ice, ground penetrating radar scans reveal that a flesh like material exists in the cracks of the ice and is believed to go all the way to the center of the moon, this was confirmed at a later date. SCP-3711 goes though active and dormant cycles that occur roughly every 4-8 months.
During an active cycle a red blood like substance rushes to the surface though cracks in the ice of Europa, basic chemical analysis has come out inconclusive with no useful data gained, further testing is required in a fully equipped facility but is suspended pending further information on SCP-3711 ( See incident report 3711-1 ) In an active state, SCP-3711 rapidly contracts and relaxes, similar to how a muscle functions. The red substance is released from SCP-3711 when it pushes against the ice, the force SCP-3711 exhibits is enough crack the ice and split its own flesh. Active cycles generally only last around 3-5 hours before entering a dormant state.
During the dormant state all activity ceases, ice is allowed to reform filling in most cracks. The red substance is frozen giving Europa the scarred craggy look we typically associate with Europa. Additionally it is speculated that the red substance is slowly reabsorbed by SCP-3711 during its inactivity, this may be a method we do not fully understand SCP-3711 uses in order to continue to exist, it has been suggested that substance is capable of either storing energy or creating it using solar power which would explain the violent rapid behavior of SCP-3711 in an active cycle and the long dormant cycle needed to regain the energy expended.
SCP-3711 anomalous behavior was first discovered and brought to the attention of the foundation during the Pioneer flybys 1973-1974. Further research was undertaken in 2000 when the Cassini orbiter performed a flyby of Jupiter. Publicly the Cassini space craft was a joint effort of exploration between NASA ( National Aeronautics and Space Administration ) ESA ( European Space Agency ) and the ASI ( Italian Space Agency ) its true objective however was to monitor several anomalies including SCP 2399 and deliver a payload consisting of 1 nuclear powered, unmanned vehicle capable of tunneling though the ice of Europa, it was code-named "Ice Pick" It was equipped with a ground penetrating RIDAR, an on board chemical lab and a high resolution camera to enable it to take detailed scans, pictures and undertake various chemical analysis.
The Ice Pick reached Europa on the 31st of December 2000 during SCP-3711s inactive state, the active state had passed 1 month earlier giving the foundation plenty of time to study. Having touched down from orbit, the vehicle began tunneling for 3 days until it reached a depth 23.6 kilometers, scans were carried out along with a chemical analysis of the red substance, the chemical analysis results were inconclusive. A follow up mission was later planned with the goal of collecting samples and returning them to Earth.
Scans were taken 100 meters away from the actual entity within the ice. Scans confirmed that the entity did indeed make up the interior of the entire moon and was covered in ice. Despite the new information no new data was gained on how SCP-3711 survives, where it came from or its intelligence. Scans showed that no organs existed despite it being a biological life form. There are however what appear to be bone like growths ( samples required for confirmation ) veins and arteries which transport various fluids of unknown purpose or composition around the entity but to no particular destination within SCP-3711. Furthermore it was discovered that there is some small movement during the dormant state which was not unlike a heart beating. The unmanned vehicle then proceed though the last 100 meters of ice and came in contact with SCP-3711, the signal was lost and SCP-3711 entered an active state lasting 7 hours and 22 minutes.
Addendum
Since the discovery of the anomalous nature of SCP-3711 a global disinformation campaign has been carried out in order to divert the public from the true nature of SCP-3711 covert agents posing as scientists and astronomers have been given instructions to explain the anomalous affects off as minerals making their way up though the ice using geothermic activity caused by the host planet Jupiter. Certain conspiracy groups have come to the conclusion that the red coloration could be algae or byproducts of life, agents have been planted to discredit these groups.
Incident Report 3711-1
The foundation wasn't the only one aware of SCP-3711 [REDACTED] sent a team of 4 astronauts to Europa on ██/██/████ the foundation was notified by an agent embedded in [REDACTED] A joint operation between MTF Alpha-1 and MTF Gamma-5 was set up with the goal of neutralizing anyone who knew of the existence of SCP-3711. A unique opportunity for further research was seized and the [REDACTED] mission was taken over by the foundation. The astronauts were inspired by becoming the first humans to reach the Jovial system and attempt to set up a research post. Mission details reviled they were never intended to survive more than a few days after landing. After 5 years 3 months and 26 days the astronauts touched down and immediately were pulled under the ice leading to an active state of SCP-3711 that lasted 19 hours and 16 minutes, by the end of the active state the surface of Europa was fragmented and parts of SCP-3711 were exposed and view-able from orbit. As of ██/██/████ no manned or unmanned missions are to take place. The ice has since covered SCP-3711 100%
