Special Containment Procedures: SCP-6089 is to be kept in a sterile environment that is less than ten meters cubed in diameter but no smaller than three meters cubed. Any ventilation system that was previously installed in said area must be completely sealed and disconnected from all main or sub ventilation systems. An air tight door must be installed at the entrance of this area which leads to a complete sterilization chamber. A second air tight door must be installed on the opposite side of the sterilization chamber.

Any personnel entering SCP-6089’s containment area must first submit to a thorough cleaning as well as a high level disinfection and sanitation. Personnel must be equipped with air tight bio-hazard suits and an isolated breathing apparatus. They must also be equipped with body temperature sensors. These suits must go through a high level disinfection and sterilization while being worn in the sterilization chamber attached to SCP-6089’s containment chamber. The same process must be repeated in reverse when any personnel exits SCP-6089’s containment area. Personnel can only enter SCP-6089’s containment area when in groups of no more than four but no less than two.

Any samples taken from SCP-6089 must be kept in a pressurized container and cannot exceed a weight of 0.5 mg. These pressurized containers can only be opened in sealed environments and gas masks or similar air filtration equipment must be worn at all times while in contact with the sample. All samples are to be returned and placed onto the surface of SCP-6089.

Description: SCP-6089 is a simple, light blue, quilted blanket. It has no tags or marks of any kind and looks unused.

SCP-6089 possesses several anomalous properties that range in type and lethality. Foremost among these is the strand of Variola virus (Smallpox) the blanket acts as a host to. The pathogen is a unique
form of the virus with several anomalous properties of its own. The virions of this pathogen, henceforth to be referred to as SCP-6089-1, remain infectious indefinitely and can only be destroyed with chemical solutions of a pH of 10.6 and above or via incineration at temperatures of 367° kelvin and above. Instances of SCP-6089-1 are capable of infecting human beings through contact with skin (entering the body via pores) and through air passages including the mouth, nose, and ears. Standard vaccines and the body's natural immune system appear to have no effect on the pathogen once it has entered the subject's body. The only known way to prevent infection is complete insulation. Instances of SCP-6089-1 remain active in the infected's body until and beyond death. While instances are active, they prove just as infectious as SCP-6089. Complete isolation, insulation, and subsequent incineration is required for any and all infected.

Once a subject is infected, there is no incubation period and symptoms begin showing immediately. While not in the local vicinity of SCP-6089, the subject will begin to experience fevers of 40° Celsius. Subjects also begin to express complaints of physical pain and may experience nausea and or vomiting. Over the course of the next ten minutes, rashes and sores will begin to appear on the subject's inner mouth, tongue, and skin. After approximately fifteen minutes post infection, the sores will become pustules, forming a crust and then scabbing after another five minutes. The subject's fever may begin to reach as high as 44.5° Celsius. Any scabs that are removed will cause the puss inside to exploded at high velocity. The puss exhibits the same infectious traits as the virions and must be incinerated. Thirty minutes post infection, subject's body will become paralyzed and the pustules will begin to burst autonomously. The subject will then expire over the next minute.

While within two meters of SCP-6089, all symptoms are exacerbated. Subjects will experience the entire array of symptoms over the course of one minute, as opposed to thirty. If the subject is removed from the vicinity of SCP-6089, the symptoms will slow, but will not stop until the subject is terminated. While within two meters of SCP-6089 and infected, subjects have reported hearing a male voice in their head. The voice speaks a phrase in an older form of Iroquoian and has been translated as follows:

May the sins of these devils be paid on them one hundred fold.

This phrase is repeated until the subject expires, increasing in volume with each uttering.

Addendum 1: It has been noted that SCP-6089 exhibits several minor memetic effects. When within two meters of SCP-6089, subjects, regardless of whether they are wearing bio hazard suits or not, report a faint smell of campfires and the distant sounds of insects and other nocturnal animals.

Addendum 2a: Secondary researcher, Alan Morlan, died of an exacerbated form of Rhinovirus. Condolences have been sent to his family accordingly, with all classified information removed from the sentiments. Cause of death was rapid onset fever and sudden asphyxiation, both of which appeared over the course of ten seconds. This is likely due to an as of yet unknown anomalous property of SCP-6089, due to the rapidity of his symptom growth.

Addendum 2b: SCP-6089 has been discovered to have an additional anomalous effect. When any instances of SCP-6089-1 come into contact with virions of other microscopic viruses the two will genetically bind together. This, in a word, super-charges the foreign virion, henceforth to be referred to as SCP-6089-2. Instances of SCP-6089-2 run along similarly accelerated timelines as instances of SCP-6089-1. Symptoms appear rapidly and always result in the fatality of the instance's host. In addition, when within two meters of SCP-6089, symptom appearance is expedited dramatically.

Addendum 3: Secondary researcher, Pierce Dentworth, died of SCP-6089 induced Variola virus. Condolences have been sent to his family accordingly, with all classified information removed from the sentiments. Cause of death was rapid onset fever and explosion of skin around the chest and face, both of which occurred over the course of 30 seconds. In the interest of clarity, the following transcript has been attached:

The autopsy report indicates that Pierce Dentworth's suit sustained three small punctures in the lower back. This allowed instances of SCP-6089-1 to contact with Dentworth's skin. Since Dentworth was within two meters of SCP-6089, the disease developed quickly, but the suit was able to contain most of the exploding pustules. The presence of ink around the punctures, as well as the average diameter of each puncture, indicates a pen had been the cause of damage. The coroner suggests that the loose pen, found on Dentworth's body in his pants pocket postmortem, is the most likely culprit of the damages. Dr. S█████████ has been compensated for the emotional trauma of the incident and has postponed further research into SCP-6089 until suitable replacements for his research staff can be found. Regularly scheduled tests on D-class individuals will continue.
