Special Containment Procedures: A population of SCP-XXXX capable of sustaining itself is currently being maintained by utilizing various snail species belonging to the Bulinus genus and human hosts via D-Class personnel, whom SCP-XXXX will be introduced to as deemed necessary to sustain the species. The eggs collected are kept in 50L freshwater containers in a biological containment area. Amounts of said liquid sample are to be presented to a population of snails in the Bulinus genus every 18 hours, after which the container should be drained and decontaminated for reuse at a later date. Snail species used are to be kept in a simulated ecosystem consistent to their natural habitat and water samples are to be collected from this area every three days. Any samples that remain unused are to be filtered and the produced biological waste disposed of.
When introduced to SCP-XXXX, D-Class are to be held in containment rooms only furnished with a human waste collection system for the duration of the growth of the introduced specimens. Part of one of the subject's limbs should be submerged in the sample until staff can verify the entrance of SCP-XXXX into the body. After the subject expires, the host's body is to be disposed of via incineration. Urine produced during the event is to be collected, and a necessary amount deposited in a new container, which will then be filled with freshwater. The size of the resulting waste sample will vary according to how much is deemed necessary to sustain the species. Any fecal matter or unneeded waste produced will also be incinerated. If a human host still remains alive and functional after ten weeks of containment, they are to be screened for any instances and then returned to their standard duties after decontamination.
It is possible there are SCP-XXXX instances still uncontained. If preliminary investigations of an area exhibiting these symptoms show positive sightings of instances, containment, cleanup, and treatment of the affected are to commence as needed.
Update (as of 03/27/20): Following Incident-XXXX-01, handling and delivery of samples from containment tanks is to be done with no human contact aside from the subject whatsoever to reduce the risk of loss of personnel. A mechanical delivery system and specialized testing chamber has been implemented around SCP-XXXX's storage units for this purpose. Removal of instances on living subjects is currently unfeasible. Description: SCP-XXXX refers to an anomalous species within the Schistosoma genus1. The species is physiologically identical to the Schistosoma haematobium species and reproduces similarly to other members of its genus. Individuals reach sexual maturation within six weeks of introduction into a human host, where they then produce eggs which penetrate the bladder walls and are expelled by the host through urine or feces. The egg will then hatch in freshwater, and the resulting larvae will infect a snail capable of harboring the species as an intermediary host, observed to be members of the Bulinus genus. On average, after a month, the growing parasite will leave the snail and proceed to infect any human host that comes into contact with infested sources of freshwater, burrowing into the skin and traveling throughout the body to mature and lay eggs after reaching the heart and liver.2
After four days of production following sexual maturation, when the eggs are expelled by a human host, SCP-XXXX instances will seize control of the host's urinary system and force the body to begin urinating at an average flow rate of 32 mL/sec, with blood potentially being excreted as well.3 The host is unable to cease this process, which continues until the individual expires primarily due to rapid dehydration and renal failure, which typically ranges from under a minute to five minutes, depending on the water content of the body. Signs of damage to the bladder are also often observed post-mortem, presumably due to the bombardment of the bladder walls with several millions of eggs. The adult instances will then also perish inside the body of the host. Fecal matter produced during this process also contains SCP-XXXX eggs, though at a concentration similar to a sample of a non-anomalous occurrence. SCP-XXXX instances were noted to produce one hundred times the amount of eggs per day produced by a member of Schistosoma haematobium on average.4
SCP-XXXX was discovered when Foundation agents investigated [REDACTED], a village in Egypt following reports that people were being found dead or dying after urinating. The agents found that at least 10% of the village's population had expired in this manner, and a research team was subsequently transported to the area. The initial research report have been included below.
Following this, cleanup and containment teams secured the area and contained the inhabitants until they either expired or were proven unaffected. The survivors were amnesticized and relocated afterward. River water and snail samples were taken to analyze the specimen further before decontamination of the area and surrounding bodies of water.
Incident Report XXXX-1: On 02/05/20, it was reported that an Assistant Researcher seemed to have marks on his arm similar to blisters from SCP-XXXX. Within the week, three more reports had observed the same from other individuals. The four in question were placed in containment and interviewed as to the origins of the marks. It was noted that all four had assisted with work on samples of SCP-XXXX, and later medical scans confirmed the presence of SCP-XXXX.
Surgical removal was attempted on one of the employees only to discover that numerous instances had attached themselves to various areas of the employee's brain. Removal of one specimen resulted in an immediate triggering of SCP-XXXX's urinary effects from the rest of the creatures in the body, resulting in the victim expiring within seconds due to the nature of the surgery. Subsequent decontamination of involved personnel followed. The now-dead instances in the employee's body were salvaged for genetic research, and the body and waste produced were incinerated. Following this, removal of the specimens was disallowed so as to prevent a similar scenario from occurring. The storage room containing the species became temporarily prohibited to enter in the interest of preventing further cases. The remaining employees expired due to SCP-XXXX's effects four weeks later. Shortly after this event, the equipment was analyzed for any potential causes.
