Item#: SCP-5XXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5XXX is to be stored within a greenhouse at Site-XX and to be kept in environment analogous to hypothesized conditions of Cretaceous Period Earth. SCP-5XXX’s containment cell is to be monitored for all living organisms capable of consuming SCP-5XXX-1. Should any organism manage to get into SCP-5XXX’s containment without prior approval by the Site Director, it should be treated as a containment breach.
All manifestations of SCP-5XXX-1 are to be collected weekly and incinerated to prevent possible containment breaches.
Any sighting of SCP-5XXX-1’s first anomalous effect is to be discredited as false via disinformation campaigns and all organizations and individuals investigating sightings of the cryptid Mokele-Mbembe are to be kept under surveillance and discredited by Foundation disinformation campaigns.
Agents embedded in all major research institutions with active paleontology programs are to monitor for any unknown instances of SCP-5XXX-2 and are to alert Foundation personnel should an unknown instance of SCP-5XXX-2 be discovered.
All instances are to be collected by Foundation personnel and stored in a standard containment cell within Site-XX. Any witnesses to instances of SCP-5XXX-2 are to be treated with Class A amnestics.
Description: SCP-5XXX is a previously unknown species of the genus Ginkgo first discovered in 1999 and is believed to responsible for the sighting of the dinosaur-like cryptid Mokele-Mbembe dating as far back as 1909. This is due to SCP-5XXX producing fruit indistinguishable from the fruit of the genus Ginkgo (classified SCP-5XXX-1) that when consumed can generate two different anomalous effects.
The primary effect of consuming SCP-5XXX-1 (occurring in 75% of known instances of SCP-5XXX-1 being consumed) will cause the individual who consumed SCP-5XXX to hallucinate a sauropod dinosaur in their vicinity, usually traveling away from the individual. The species of sauropod dinosaur varies but all seem to be of species found in the Southern hemisphere, with many having been found on the African continent. This effect can last from five to ten minutes, after which the sauropod dinosaur will seemingly disappear.
The secondary effect of consuming SCP-5XXX-1 (occurring in 25% of known instances of SCP-5XXX-1 being consumed) will result in the disappearance of the individual. Within 48 hours of the individual’s disappearance, an instance of SCP-5XXX-2 will appear in Cretaceous era strata, commonly near an active dig site. SCP-5XXX-2 will appear as the complete fossilized remains of the species Homo sapiens with similarities to that of the induvial who last consumed SCP-5XXX-1. Due to SCP-5XXX-2 commonly appearing where it can be easily discovered, SCP-5XXX-2 instances should be found and collected before discovery by research institutions due to the possible consequences that the discovery of modern Homo sapiens having existed during the Mesozoic Era.

Recovery Log: On 1/29/1999, researchers reported the discovery of fossilized human remains being discovered at the [Redacted] in Montana. Foundation personnel were dispatched, due to concern that the discovery was a misidentified instance of SCP-4138. When the specimen was collected and placed into Foundation custody, it was determined to be human by Dr. Moadson (Balckbox that). Upon further investigation, the fossilized specimen was found to bear similar injuries to a missing person in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this being a damaged left arm, which led to the recovery of SCP-5XXX.
