Item #: SCP-3928
Object Class: Euclid.
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3928 requires no special containment measures, it is currently housed in a simple 5m³ solid steel room, the inside of which is fitted with acoustic sensors which will alert on site personnel should SCP-3928 begin its anomalous behaviour.
The door is fitted with a simple 4 digit combination lock to prevent unauthorised access to the cell, specifically in the event that a person designated SCP-3928-1 arrives before research staff.
Dr. Jimenez is to be notified immediately in the event of an SCP-3928-1 manifestation, no matter what time of day or night.
Description: SCP-3928 is standard in appearance to a red phone box common to the British Empire in the twentieth century, specifically the K8 model that was first introduced in 1968. It appears to be in pristine condition, not having suffered any weathering effects that would normally occur to such an installation that is situated in an outdoor environment over many years.
Also of note is that no telecommunications company has any knowledge of there being a telephone box in that area. Indeed, since the advent of mobile technology the total number of red phone boxes of this type have largely been removed, although some still remain mainly due to its status as a British Cultural Icon.
Foundation operatives were first drawn to the area due to an unusually high number of incidents where members of the local populace had to be restrained or arrested due to mental abberations where each person had become convinced they were either about to die, or somehow knew when and how they were to die. When it was noted that in every instance every self prophesied death did indeed come to fruition, local authorities deferred to The Foundation.
Upon arrival operatives were pointed in the direction of the latest person seemingly afflicted, who had apparently sequestered himself in a local library for the past five days, refusing to leave under any circumstances. The exchange between operatives and the person can be found in Interview Log 3928-A.
Unfortunately the death of the individual meant that personnel on site had no clues to follow as to the location of the anomaly, and indeed the nature of the anomaly initially baffled on site personnel as no causal link could be found between anything on site and the behaviour of the citizens.
Fortunately, an exchange between Field Agents K.█████ and S.████████ paved the way for location and subsequent containment of SCP-3928. (See Incident Log 3928-B)
The first observational anomaly noted by containment teams first at the scene was that the telephone receiver had a dialling tone upon being picked up despite not being wired in any way to the main telephone cables. Field Agent P.████ reported that using the phone in the manner as intended did indeed connect to the targeted person and was not anomalous in nature.
Note: As Field Agent P.████ had decided to conduct a test on an unknown SCP without any safeguards or permission from any lead researcher while still in an uncontained area, it should be noted he was disciplined and demoted to D-class where he can join in the experiments at his hearts content. - Dr.███████.
INTERVIEW LOG 3928-A
Interviewed: Unknown man in library
Interviewers: Field Agents D.██████ and P.████
Foreword: Agents located the man on the bottom floor of the library in a reading room just off the main floor. Upon entering, it was noted that the man had been defecating and urinating in one of the corners. Apparently attempts at removal by security had been met with manic, desperate violence.
<Begin Log, 17/7/2███ >
D.██████: Sir, you have been asked to remove yourself numerous times from the building, come with us, we would like to ask you some questions on what has happened to you.
Unknown man: (laughs derisively) No,no,no,no. I'm not going anywhere, I'm safe in here, safe from death. If I stay here I'll live forever you see? (man begins to cry) But of all the places to go into, why did I choose this one? This is the last place I should have come.. this is the place the voice mentioned..why? Why? Why?
Both agents report that at this point the man began to self harm by method of a ballpoint pen repeatedly being stabbed and dragged across his arms. Arms were smeared with a mixture of both blue and black ink, as well as congealed blood.
D.██████: Sir.. if you come with us, we promise we can protect..
Unknown man: (screaming) HOW CAN YOU PROTECT ME FROM DEATH??
P.████: (In low voice) Well, SCP-███ could probably do it..
At this point agents report that the man began throwing books and his own excrement at the operatives, and seemed to be showing signs of a mental breakdown
D.██████: RIGHT! I've had enough of this, come on, we're dragging him out.
Both agents say they successfully managed to grab the man by both arms and prevent him from fighting back to a large extent. The man had no doubt been weakened by his stay in a library, not noted for its abundance of food
Unknown man: screaming NO!! NOT OUTSIDE!! NO!! YOU'RE KILLING ME! DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND? YOU'RE K….
At this point audio picks up a sudden crunching sound and both agents expressing noises of surprise, followed by 12 seconds of silence
P.████: Well… Fuck!
End Log
Closing Statement Upon debriefing, both agents report that the moment they had dragged him outside, the man, (who they say was already looking upwards in terror) was hit in the face by one of the marble gargoyles that decorate the roof of the library. Man died instantly, neither agent was hurt. Analysis of the location the gargoyle fell from was inconclusive as to whether it fell due to a structural fault/erosion, or was caused to fall by other means.
Note: Who the hell is that moron agent that mentioned an SCP in front of a civilian? I want him severely reprimanded for such a gross breach of protocol! Dr.████████.
Note: That was former Agent P.████, Doctor. He's the one that made the stupid unauthorised test when we finally tracked the SCP down.. he's already been taken care of. Dr.███████.
Incident Log 3928-B
Persons involved: Field Agents K.█████ and S.████████.
Note: The following account was pieced together from video logs from personal cameras that all operatives are required to wear during incidents. Prior to this both agents had been patrolling for evidence of SCP related activity as required by Containment Protocol 1.
S.████████: Wait.. do you hear that?
K.█████: Hear what?
S.████████: That.. it sounds like a phone ringing..
K.█████: I don't hear a damn thing, and so what? Phones ring all the time.
S.████████: Yeah, I know, but.. I dunno.. I.. kind of want to answer it.
K.█████: Huh? What do you mean? Just ignore it.
S.████████: (Starts to sweat visibly) N..no.. I.. need to answer it. I've got.. to answer it.
//S.████████ begins running in a north western direction, not paying attention to traffic as he crosses the road. Agent K.█████ radios local site Director that there may be a possible lead on an anomaly. Told to maintain proximity to S.████████.
Agents run for 5 minutes, eventually the sound of ringing is picked up by sound equipment.
K.█████: Hey, I hear it now!
//Note, no response to this was given by S.████████, nor any indication that he even heard. Eventually both agents come across what we now know to be SCP-3928. S.████████, visibly shaking, picks up the phone.
S.████████: H..Hello?
S.████████ begins to look confused, his eyes darting to K.█████ with increasing amounts of fear. Despite K.█████ continually asking what's wrong, no reply is given. Eventually after 2 minutes and 13 seconds, S.████████ drops the phone and begins acting fearful of K.█████.
S.████████: (Noticibly distressed) YOU'RE GONNA KILL ME! YOU'RE GONNA SHOOT ME IN THE HEART!! GET AWAY FROM ME!!
K.█████: What?? I'm not going to kill you! Don't be dumb, Steve!
(K.█████ begins to slowly approach S.████████)
Suddenly S.████████ pulls out his revolver and attempts to fire upon K.█████. The gun can be heard clicking, but no bullets are expended.. however in a reflex action to having a gun pulled out on him, K.█████ pulls out his revolver and shoots twice, one bullet hitting the hand, causing the gun to fall and one in the chest. S.████████ falls to the ground, bleeding profusely.
K.█████: (Visibly distressed) FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK MAN!?
S.████████: (laboured breathing) S..see?? I.. I Kne.. (coughs up blood) knew you w.. would.
Addendum Ballistics report on the gun wielded by S.████████ show that all chambers of the gun were loaded and that the gun was in very good condition, why it did not fire is unknown, and is theorised to be part of SCP-3928's effect, although there is a marked lack of evidence to support this claim.
Autopsy on S.████████ shows that the second bullet penetrated the chest and impacted the fourth rib, a piece of which severed the pulmonary artery leading to S.████████'s quick demise.
K.█████ manifested symptoms of severe guilt and regret over the incident and was given a level 2 amnestic and is also scheduled for regular counselling sessions should he require them.
Once SCP-3928 had been identified it was removed and sent to Site-12 where it was set up in accordance with its original containment parameters, and its short-lived testing began. See Test Log.
Test Log
Tests 1-12
These tests didn't reveal any new information regarding SCP-3928, unfortunately. All calls made went through as would be expected from from any normal phone box, all currency used was of British Pound Stirling from post decimilisation. (Pre decimiisation coins were found to return directly to the 'Returned coins' slot. All tests headed by Dr.Jimenez. All phone tests were done by D-Class personnel.
Test 13
Dr.Jimenez, frustrated at the lack of progress, attempted to do this test himself, however, upon attempting to put in a standard £1 coin found that while it retained the coin, no dialtone could be heard, and inputting a number failed. In a flash of insight, (as he calls it) he placed 25 Mexican Peso into the slot, whereupon a dial tone was heard. Unfortunately despite the rash of excitement it was found to work just as before, with the call connecting normally. However we now know that the machine can only be used if the person using it uses currency from the country of his birth. How SCP-3928 knows this is unknown.
Tests 14- 23
These tests were all variations on using currency from the home country of the operator, theory declared proved from these tests. Interestingly it was also found that if a person had been granted nationality in a country different from their birth nation, the adopted countries currency worked while those from the birth country didn't. Also those who held dual nationality could use either currencies.
Test 24
During this test the true nature of SCP-3928 was defined. While attempting an experiment whereby a person was granted nationality (after) already putting money into the telephone. SCP-3928 unexpectedly began to ring.
D-36372, (who was already in the containment area) was chosen to answer it but reported no noise on the other end. Nobody else that picked up could hear anything either. Furthermore when the phone was put back onto its hook, it immediately started ringing again. This continued for 34 minutes, when suddenly D-72518, who was not authorised to be at this location on site at the time, appeared at the containment unit.
The event from that point, (Hereafter named Incident 3928-C). Has been transcribed as below.
Transcription of Incident 3928-C
Persons Involved Dr.Jimenez, D-72518.
Dr.Jimenez: You there, what are you doing? This is a secure area and you're not authorised!
D-72518: S..sorry, but I heard the phone ringing while I was in the mess hall and.. I felt the need to answer it.. can I?
Dr.Jimenez: The mess hall? But that's on the other side of the complex! How did you? Never mind.. hmm. Yes, we'll let you answer but allow us to set up some equipment first.
//Staff set up a listening device to the ear of the telephone and prepared to trace the call as it was being undertaken. D-72518 becomes more and more frantic as this takes place, and when finally allowed to answer grabs the phone quite desperately.
D-72518: H..hello? …what? W..wha..what d..do you mean I'm going to die of a heart attack as a result of this phone call? WHAT DO YOU MEAN???
Note, D-72518 at this point drops the phone, has a notably grey and waxy complexion and suddenly slumps to the floor. Medics arrive on scene and declare he died of a sudden cardiac arrest. The listening device did not hear anything coming from the other end of the phone, and the trace did not work.
NOTICE
It is the opinion of Dr.Jimenez that SCP-3928 only shows its anomalous properties in the form of an incoming call, at which point the intended recipient will be able to hear it and will feel an irresistible urge to locate and answer the call, the recipient will be able to unfailingly locate SCP-3928 with zero mistakes in the route. D-72518 was noted to take a less direct route to the phone due to a detour he took bypassing a section of the site that had just had an incident with SCP- ███. An incident he would have had no prior knowledge of. Upon answering the phone it is clear the recipient will be told the method of his or her death and so far it appears to be unavoidable. We have no way of knowing how far the reach of SCP-3928 extends at this moment in time.
Should anybody arrive at the site and claim to be here to 'answer the phone's should be granted immediate entry and allowed inside under escort. Furthermore should anybody on site either have an urge to use the phone, or spot someone having a compulsion to answer the phone, even if no one else can hear it shall also be allowed to approach it, again, under escort.
All instances of people who are so afflicted will hereby be designated SCP-3298-1 and be allowed to make their way to the phone. Ensure that Dr. Jimenez is alerted prior to their arrival.
In light of what little is known of SCP-3928 recommended measures are to fit acoustic sensors inside the cell to alert staff to an anomaly, and the fitting of a simple lock to secure the door.
Granted. OS-█
It is clear there is a lot we don't know about this SCP, for instance, does it cause the death or merely report it? The gun that didn't fire when it should.. did it do that? Alas, we cannot experiment on it as it is. Due to the high level of unknowns, I request this SCP be designated Euclid.
We must wait for the phone to ring.
Dr.Jimenez.
Addendum
Due to several deaths at the hands of various SCP's it is clear that SCP-3298 does not for some reason report deaths that are either directly or indirectly caused by SCP's. As a result SCP-3298 is not useful as an early warning device for events such as containment breaches.. it may however still be useful in the event of warnings about XK extinction events etc.. if we only had data on how long its warning effect is! The lack of experimental data is frustrating beyond belief! Dr.██████.
