SCP-4594: The Colony
rating: 0+x

Item #: SCP-4594

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4594 is kept in a 200 x 200 x 15 metre terrarium. The floor of the terrarium is made of soil and must be constantly refreshed with compost for optimum growth of the flowers that allow for SCP-4594's survival. A wide variety of flowers must be grown to allow for diversity in the nectar SCP-4594 collects. The plants are provided with water by overhead sprinklers, and light by lamps set to simulate a day/night cycle. A single tree grows in the centre of the terrarium, where the colony of SCP-4594 is located.

Description: SCP-4594 was first collected on ██ May 200█, close to the village of [REDACTED], France. SCP-4594 is the collective designation for a colony of bees of a previously unknown species. Upon initial retrieval by the Foundation, their behaviour was almost identical to that of the Western Honey Bee (Apis mellifera).

The first anomalous property, possesed by all members of the species, is that unless examined closely or viewed in a photograph or video, the body features that would otherwise distinguish them from a Western Honey Bee appear identical to that of the aforementioned species.

The worker bees, as with any other bee colony, are the most common, and will henceforth be referred to as SCP-4594-1. Instances of SCP-4594-1 are able to walk on their rear two pairs of legs alone, with the front pair of legs terminating in triple-pronged chelae, allowing them to grip and carry things more easily. In the place the normal stinger usually possessed by all bee species is a stinger more resembling that of a wasp, allowing SCP-4594-1 to sting more than once before death. SCP-4594-2 refers to the drone bees of the colony. The same anomalous properties as mentioned for SCP-4594-1 can be applied for SCP-4594-2.

The hive of the colony is non-anomalous and resembles a normal honey bee hive. It shall henceforth be referred to as SCP-4594-3.

Both SCP-4594-1 and -2 have a higher brain-to-body ratio than any other known species of insect, and exhibit cognitive functions far beyond that of any other insect, even surpassing the Corvus family of birds. Instances of -1 and -2, like normal bees, will largely ignore the presence of any animal unless they or SCP-4594-3, are threatened. In such a case they attack the threat, however they do so with far more co-ordination than normal bees, often targeting the face or other sensitive areas. This suggests they are aware this will cause more distress to the threat and result in it's retreat more quickly.

SCP-4594-4 refers to the queen of the colony. SCP-4594-4's anomalous properties match those of -1 and -2, however it's cognitive functions are much higher than that of -1 and -2. Accurate measurements of this cannot be taken, however, as SCP-4594-4 never allows itself to be captured and flees at even the first sign of human presence. This indicates it is aware of its containment and wishes not to be studied. SCP-4594-4 has also displayed incredible longevity for a bee, unlike -1 and -2, which experience average lifespans.

Addendum 4594-01: Many instances of SCP-4594-1 built small vessels resembling buckets out of wax. Personnel then witnessed instances of SCP-4594-1 carry these vessels with them, using their chelae, when they went foraging for nectar. Upon finding a flower, these instances extracted the nectar as normal, but then "spat" it out into the bucket. They then collected more nectar as normal. This increased the amount of nectar SCP-4594-1 instances could collect.

Addendum 4594-02: A new instance of SCP-4594-3 has been built on the tree, with the previous instance being abandoned. This new instance is higher up than the previous instance and has a completely different shape, being much larger and completely enclosed save for entrances and what can only be described as "ventilation holes", with no cells visible from the outside. Internal examination has shown it to have multiple "floors" parallel to the ground, much like a building with multiple floors. The inside walls, floors and ceilings are still covered in typical, hexagonal cells.

Addendum 4594-03: A large bulbous structure, connected to a large funnel to the side of it, was built on top of SCP-4594-3 by instances of SCP-4594-1, both composed of wax. The bulbous structure was connected to SCP-4594-3 by a series of intricate wax pipes. Upon further investigation, it appeared that instances of SCP-4594-1 were no longer depositing remaining honey after sharing nectar in the cells of the hive, and were instead depositing it into this large structure. Here it mixed with water from the sprinklers collected by the funnel, reducing its viscosity and allowing it to run through the new piping system that both emptied into pool-like structures on each "floor" where all instances of SCP-4594 can feed additionally, and interconnected each cell, feeding the pupae of SCP-4594. It was also discovered that this latter feature can be "turned off" when pupae are not developing.

Addendum 4594-04: A new structure connecting the reservoir built previously and a branch of the tree has been constructed. Analysis showed that this structure tapped into some the phloems and xylems of the tree, and siphoned some of the nutrients passing through them into the reservoir, adding to the amount of food SCP-4594 can collect.

Due to the complexity of these developments in the behaviour of SCP-4594, it is currently theorised by personnel working with it that SCP-4594-4 intelligence might even approach that of humans, and that it is developing these ideas to enhance the colony and instructing SCP-4594-1 instances to carry them out. If development continues, a possible upgrade to Keter has been suggested.
