Moss That Makes You Mean

Item#: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures:

SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a 20 gallon fish tank measuring 60cm x 32cm x 42cm which is filled with water with a pH balance between 5.0 and 8.0. The tank itself is to be kept in an unmarked office inaccessible to the public at [Redacted] Aquarium. The office is staffed to be staffed daily by an organization-supplied handler.

SCP-XXXX produces a suggestive field with variable radius around its tank at all times. Subjects affected by this field report that their state of mind felt altered, as if they were on the verge of an anxiety attack. Regular communication with the organization-supplied handler reduces the radius of this field to 120cm at the minimum.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a colony of vesiculara dubyana or Java moss covering the majority of a small decorative statue of a sailor, 14cm in height. The moss itself displays no physical properties deviating from the expectation for its species. The colony is capable of individual movement, however, and each individual frond can be manipulated specifically. Using this ability to self-manipulate, the colony of moss appears to "pilot" the statue beneath it, changing its posture or causing it to move around.

The statue is made of modeling clay, displays no anomalous properties and appears to be handmade. The initials "KL" are carved into the bottom of its left foot, and the number "1988" is carved into the bottom of its right foot.

SCP-XXXX was found in the fish tank a newly abandoned home. The former occupants were interviewed and each seemed entirely convinced that the building was haunted. They described feelings of hostility and inappropriate, emotional reactions toward each other while they lived there, along with a collective desire to prove each other wrong over virtually any subject.

After typical examination for anomalous entities failed to turn up results, one agent noticed moss growing up the glass in the corner of the fishtank, with tiny markings scraped through it. Upon closer examination, the tiny markings were English lettering- words and phrases such as "MOTHERFUCKER" and "LIAR" and "EAT SHIT" were written in the moss without spaces or, in many cases, correct spelling. The tank was retrieved for examination, at which point the moss was identified as anomalous and attempts at communication began.

Once better understood, the moss was moved to a new, clean tank, and a volunteer was assigned with its upkeep as well as documentation of its interactions with the object.

The object frequently expresses resentment and violent thinking. The process by which it uses language and forms coherent thought is currently unknown.

Any subject that expresses their own dissatisfaction while within the influential radius around SCP-XXXX will find their drive to take action against that dissatisfaction substantially amplified. Test sentences such as "I don't like the lighting in here" spoken within the radius have resulted in the speaker using any means necessary in the immediate area to remove, rearrange, or destroy the lightbulbs in the room until they become exhausted. The colony of moss undergoes germination for the entirety of these episodes. A higher density of moss has a direct correlation to the minimum radius of the suggestive field it produces.

Maybe some kind of communication log pending, that seems appropriate. There's a lot of work to do here.
