Item #: SCP-5590

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5590 is to be contained in a standard anomalous object containment vault in site-[redacted] at all times, excluding when it is being tested. No personnel are to make contact with SCP-5590 unless approved by a researcher with a level 4 security clearance or higher, excluding D-class subjects during testing. Any personnel who are approved to make contact with SCP-5590 must wear standard latex gloves, or gloves of a similar design.

Description: SCP-5590 is a featureless sterling silver pocket watch weighing approximately 35 grams, with a diameter of 3.5 centimeters, and an attached sterling silver chain of approximately 30 centimeters. SCP-5590 has been confirmed to be a cognitohazard, as any human being who sees SCP-5590 will have a strong urge to pick it up until SCP-5590 is out of sight. This effect does not occur when SCP-5590 is viewed by camera, computer, or photograph.
Upon making contact with human skin, SCP-5590 will “bind” itself to the person who made contact with it. The person who made contact with SCP-5590 will find it impossible to set it down, and have an uncontrollable urge to reset the clock to 00:00, regardless of what time it was upon the time of contact.
Upon changing SCP-5590’s time to 00:00, the subject will have exactly 12 hours for another person to make contact with SCP-5590, at which point SCP-5590 will “bind” itself to the next person, and the previous person will be able to release SCP-5590. The new person will reset the timer back to 00:00, and the cycle will restart. However, testing has shown that SCP-5590’s current holder will try their best to not let another person come in contact with SCP-5590. If nobody makes contact with SCP-5590 within the 12 hour period, it’s current holder will seemingly disappear upon the watch hitting 12:00, leaving only the watch behind. It is currently unknown where the person SCP-5590 binds itself to goes upon making uninterrupted contact with it for 12 hours.
It is important to note that if SCP-5590 is passed off from one person to the next, the new person that SCP-5590 is bound to will not be able to pass it back to anyone who has previously held SCP-5590, even if they touch SCP-5590 again. Due to the circumstances of SCP-5590’s retrieval, and how a subject holding SCP-5590 acts, it is currently theorized that whoever possesses SCP-5590 will subconsciously believe that they stole it, and that SCP-5590 is rightfully theirs. This is further backed up by the discovery of [redacted].

Recovery: SCP-5590 was discovered on ██/██/20██, in the city of [redacted], [redacted], after a series of public thefts over the same item caught the foundation’s attention. Foundation agents embedded in [redacted]’s police force searched for the item under the guise of a police investigation into the thefts, and apprehended the holder of SCP-5590 at the time. Upon noticing the urge to hold SCP-5590, the agents retreated after binding SCP-5590’s holder and called for assistance in containing SCP-5590. As the retrieval team arrived, SCP-5590’s holder vanished, leaving only SCP-5590. Upon seeing this, extreme caution as to not make physical contact with SCP-5590 was made, and it was placed in a container without incident. It is currently unknown who the original owner of SCP-5590, and who the creator of SCP-5590 is.

Addendum SCP-5590-01 - Test Logs:

Test 001 - ██/██/20██

Subject: D-8787, a 27 year old Caucasian male.
Procedure: D-8787 instructed to enter a testing chamber containing SCP-5590, describe what they feel, and then make physical contact with it.
Results: D-8787 entered the chamber willingly, and upon making eye contact with SCP-5590, described a “crazy urge to pick it up”. Upon picking up SCP-5590, D-8787 reset it’s time to 00:00. When asked about this, D-8787 claimed that he “couldn’t help it, it felt wrong otherwise”. When asked to set SCP-5590 down, D-8787 claimed that he couldn’t get himself to put it back down. D-8787 echoed this response even after being threatened with termination. Exactly 12 hours after D-8787 reset SCP-5590’s time to 00:00, D-8787 disappeared without a trace. Further investigation of D-8787’s whereabouts have been inconclusive, and D-8787 has been presumed dead. SCP-5590 was left on the ground until Test 002, about an hour later.
Analysis: Due to the circumstances of SCP-5590’s recovery and the results of this test, SCP-5590 is confirmed to be a cognitohazard of moderate strength.

Test 002 - ██/██/20██

Subject: D-9663, a 23 year old Asian female.
Procedure: D-9663 will be provided with latex gloves, before being instructed to enter the testing chamber containing SCP-5590. They are to put SCP-5590 back into its containment chamber, and are instructed to not make skin contact under any circumstances, under threat of termination.
Results: D-9663 reported a similar pull to SCP-5590 that D-8787 experienced, and picked up SCP-5590 wearing the gloves. D-9663 didn’t reset the time, and while D-9663 reported a strong desire to keep holding onto SCP-5590, managed to place it back into it’s containment chamber with no incident.
Analysis: SCP-5590 confirmed to only activate upon skin contact. Latex gloves approved for handling SCP-5590. D-9663 was later instructed to use latex-free gloves to handle SCP-5590 again, and was able to put SCP-5590 back into its container without incident again, proving that any type of glove that fully blocks skin contact from SCP-5590 is usable.

Test 003 - ██/██/20██

Subject: D-6028, 34 year old Caucasian male, and D-3452, a 29 year old African-American male.
Procedure: D-6028 is to pick up SCP-5590, and D-3452 is to attempt to take it from D-6028. D-6028 will then be told to attempt to take back SCP-5590, assuming he does not naturally attempt to do so.
Results: Upon picking up SCP-5590, D-6028 tried his very hardest to keep it away from D-3452. When threatened with termination unless he allowed D-3452 to make contact with SCP-5590, D-6028 claimed that “I swear to god, I can’t bring myself to let him touch it” and kept trying to keep SCP-5590 away from D-3452. D-3452 eventually managed to touch SCP-5590, at which point D-6028 relinquished it, and reported that he no longer felt a desire to hold it. D-3452 reset the timer, and D-6028 was ordered to attempt to grab SCP-5590. D-6028 was a larger person than D-3452, and made contact with SCP-5590 with relative ease, despite D-3452’s best efforts to keep the watch away. However, D-6028 was physically unable to pull SCP-5590 away from D-3452, despite managing to wrestle D-3452 to the ground and get a clear hold of SCP-5590, describing that “it feels like it’s glued to him”. Eventually, D-6028 was returned to his cell, and D-3452 disappeared after 12 hours.
Analysis: It appears that former holders of SCP-5590 who survive are immune to SCP-5590’s effects until after someone disappears from its effect. It is unclear at the moment as of why this effect exists.

Further testing of SCP-5590 has been suspended, as it has been deemed unnecessary and a waste of D-Class subjects.
