Picture of SCP-XXXX Instance

Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: Copies of SCP-XXXX must be kept in a Class 3 biosafety container at Site-███ bio-containment unit. If any pages of an SCP-XXXX instance are exposed to either pigmented paraffin wax or marker ink made from 1-Propanol, 1-butanol, diacetone alcohol or cresols, Class 3 bio-hazardous procedures must be put into effect and all personnel must be evacuated from within a 10 meter radius. Any instances of SCP-XXXX-2 must be contained within a standard Class D cell and fed a diet similar to that of a gonepteryx rhamni. Foundation agents must monitor coloring books sold during book fairs for any copies of SCP-XXXX.

Description:
SCP-XXXX is a line of children's coloring books titled "Drawing with Butterflies". These books were published and distributed by New Larva Limited. The production line of book

Exposure to SCP-XXXX-1 is harmless until the total spore count reaches between 1000-1500 spores. Once a subject is exposed to this level or spores, they will begin their transformation into an instance of SCP-XXXX-2. SCP-XXXX-2 instances are human butterfly hybrids. Those transformed retain their cognitive ability.

SCP-XXXX-2 Instance Outline

SCP-XXXX was first discovered by the Foundation when 23 kids were reported to have transformed into instances of SCP-XXXX-2 following a local book fair in █████████ Wisconsin. Foundation agents tracked down each of the books sold, it was part of a grab bag of coloring books passed out by the book fair organizers. Seven of the books were found in the possession of kids who had not yet colored in it. Foundation agents were able to follow the trail of the books back to a small warehouse in ███████████████ Colorado where the books were being printed and distributed. The warehouse was abandoned when the Foundation discovered. Inside was a small scale printing operation which could produce a total of 100 copies of SCP-XXXX a day. Additionally a set of makeshift laboratories were found where the books pages were being treated with SCP-XXXX-1. Four small cells were found in the back of the warehouse which contained children's toys as well as several prototype copies of SCP-XXXX. The Foundation locked down the warehouse with a class 3 bio-containment unit after the agents exploring became exposed to high levels of SCP-XXXX-1. The warehouse was subsequently destroyed per bio-hazardous disposal procedures. No evidence was found regarding the individuals responsible for creating SCP-XXXX and SCP-XXXX-1. New Larva Ltd. is still under investigation by Foundation agents. A total of 1500 copies of SCP-XXXX were recovered, however evidence suggests that just over 5000 books were produced, how many of those were treated with SCP-XXXX-1 is unknown.

Addendum XXXX-1:
SCP-XXXX Test Log-1
Subject: Corpse of a recently deceased D-Class
Researcher: Dr. Donald
Test Setup:

  • One copy of SCP-XXXX in a class 3 bio-containment testing chamber along with one set of standard child's crayons.
  • The D-Class corpse was placed adjacent to SCP-XXXX.

Test Procedure:

  1. Dr. Donald entered the chamber in a class-3 bio-containment suit.
  2. Dr. Donald proceeded to color page one of SCP-XXXX
  3. Body was left for a 24 hour period

Test Result:

  • 1500 PPM of SCP-XXXX-1 measured
  • No changes were made to the body
  • SCP-XXXX-1 appears to quickly decompose when no living tissue is present, spores that settled on the dead tissues simply decomposed.

Researchers Notes:
During decontamination, many of the spores were found on my suit, this suggests that the spores maybe attracted to live tissues. How the spores were able to travel through the air towards me is still a mystery.

SCP-XXXX Test Log-2
Subject: One Rattus rattus (Black Rat)
Researcher: Dr. Donald
Test Setup:

  • One copy of SCP-XXXX in a class 3 bio-containment testing chamber along with one set of standard child's crayons.
  • The black rat placed adjacent to SCP-XXXX in a cage
  • An isolation chamber is placed between SCP-XXXX and the rat with a single tube going from the chamber with SCP-XXXX and the rats cage in order to measure the flow of the spores

Test Procedure:

  1. Dr. Donald entered the chamber in a class-3 bio-containment suit.
  2. Dr. Donald proceeded to color page two of SCP-XXXX
  3. Rat was left in room for a 24 hour period

Test Result:

  • 1500 PPM of SCP-XXXX-1 measured
  • The Rat remained unchanged, further examination showed that SCP-XXXX-1 instances were present in the Rats respiratory system and on its skin, however they appear to have begun decaying upon entering or touching the Rat in the same manor as the human corpse.
  • The SCP-XXXX-1 instances were observed to present in higher concentrations Dr. Donald's suit gloves that were inserted into the isolation chamber than those that traveled through the tube between SCP-XXXX and the rat.

Researchers Notes:
The SCP-XXXX-1 instances appear to have some ability to maneuver in the air and identify human hosts. How this is accomplished is beyond me as they appear to be similar in cellular make up to a standard fungal spore. One difference appears to be a small set of flaps that appear to give them the ability to maneuver in the air.

SCP-XXXX Test Log-3
Subject: D-4975
Researcher: Dr. Donald
Test Setup:

  • One copy of SCP-XXXX in a class 3 bio-containment testing chamber along with one set of standard child's crayons.
  • D-Class is placed on a chair next to SCP-XXXX-1

Test Procedure:

  1. D-4675 was instructed to color a small portion of page three of the book.
  2. After doing so the level of SCP-XXXX-1 were measured in the room
  3. A blood test was performed on D-4675 each hour for 24 hours

Test Result:

  • 50 PPM of SCP-XXXX-1 measured in the room after coloring
  • D-4675 was observed to remain mostly unchanged, though he requested food more often than was normal and his body temperature fluctuated reaching fever levels for a short time.
  • Blood tests showed that D-4675's immune system was able to fight off the infection of SCP-XXXX-1 instances.

Researchers Notes:
I believe that the level of exposure has to be much higher in order for someone to be fully affected by SCP-XXXX-1. Based on D-4675's reaction and given the relatively low levels of SCP-XXXX-1 instances in the air, it would appear it is possible for the human immune system to fight off the effects of SCP-XXXX-1.

SCP-XXXX Test Log-4
Subject: D-4975
Researcher: Dr. Donald
Test Setup:

  • One copy of SCP-XXXX in a class 3 bio-containment testing chamber along with one set of standard child's crayons.
  • D-Class is placed on a chair next to SCP-XXXX-1

Test Procedure:

  1. D-4675 was instructed to color the rest of page three of the book.
  2. After doing so the level of SCP-XXXX-1 were measured in the room
  3. A blood test was performed on D-4675 each hour for two days

Test Result:

  • 1500 PPM of SCP-XXXX-1 measured
  • D-4675 then began to eat at a much faster rate than is common.
  • After 30 minutes of repeated eating, D-4675 was observed to fall asleep
  • After a period of 2 days, D-4675 awoke, it was noticed a swelling of he abdomen and pelvic region.
  • D-4675 was observed to hang himself from a cross beam of the test chamber by his feet.
  • D-4675 then starts spinning a substance from its mouth around itself. This substance is similar in make up to gonepteryx rhamni caterpillar silk however it is much higher tensile strength.
  • Once completely covered with the silk, there is no movement from D-4675.
  • Note: At this point blood testing was halted due to the fact that the chrysalis could not be penetrated for sample extraction.
  • After a period of one week, D-4675 emerges from the chrysalis transformed into an instance of SCP-XXXX-2
  • D-4675 is shortly is then terminated.
  • Blood tests showed that while subjects immune system attempted to combat SCP-XXXX-1, it was unable to given the amount aspirated and ingested.
  • Autopsy showed that much of D-4675's body had been transformed in the process, many of the organs remained the same, with the heart and lungs enlarging in order to handle the operation of the hosts wings.
  • The pelvic region down were transformed into a male gonepteryx rhamni sex organ.
  • In the throat was a new organ capable of producing silk.
  • Subjects tong was replaced with a long proboscis
  • Bones had significant degradation in bone density, most likely to make up for weight to allow the subject to fly and the subjects new exoskeleton helps better keep the body shape.

Researchers Notes:
This instance of SCP-XXXX-2 is very similar to those we had already encountered however far more mature. There is a potential for us to use the extremely strong silk. It appears the SCP-XXXX-1 has a similar effect to a subject as a retro virus, rewriting their DNA and modifying their body structure.

SCP-XXXX Test Log-4
Subject: D-5681
Researcher: Dr. Donald
Test Setup:

  • One copy of SCP-XXXX in a class 3 bio-containment testing chamber along with one set of standard colored pencils.
  • D-Class is placed on a chair next to SCP-XXXX-1

Test Procedure:

  1. D-5681 was instructed to color the page one of the book.
  2. After doing so the level of SCP-XXXX-1 were measured in the room
  3. A blood test was performed on D-4675 each hour for 24 hours

Test Result:

  • 0 PPM of SCP-XXXX-1 measured
  • D-5681 remained unchanged

Researchers Notes:
Its interesting that the instrument used to color the pages impacts the effect. It would seem who ever developed SCP-XXXX-1 intended it to be used with either a standard crayon or the markers that came with the books. We will have to do more testing to determine which writing implements can cause the effect.
