OPREP No. 873
GRID REF: 41U LB 61 73
DTG: 17:30 28 Sept, 1957(UTC)
Situation: Squad component MAZ-1 has been activated as a QRF in response to a nuclear event
1000 meters south of the █████████████████████ Main Reactor building. The area surrounding the building is highly irradiated. Visibility is low, and building power is not guaranteed. (1) BTR-60 Armored Personnel Carrier will be in support.
Mission: MAZ-1 will move to secure all instances of SCP-xxxx for extraction by secondary response teams.
Execution: at 1730 MAZ-1 will depart ██████ FOB in (1) BTR-60 APC. MAZ-1 will disembark at insert/extract point 300 meters west of the main reactor building, and move to infiltrate the objective building. Once on site, MAZ-1 will activate the AZ-5 (SCRAM) emergency shutdown and secure all instances of SCP-xxxx. Once secured, MAZ-1 will move to extraction, and return to ██████ FOB for debrief.
Admin & Logistics:
All living contacts are to be treated as possible threats, but deadly force is not authorized except in self defense. In the event of friendly casualties, the objective must be secured before medevac can be dispatched.
All operators will be equipped with standard operational loadout, and issued level 5 full body radiation suits, shoulder mounted camera feed, and integrated comms.
Command & Signal:
Primary contact: field agent Davies (callsign: Atom/actual)
Squad Leader: Sgt. Gasick (MAZ-1)
[REDACTED]
Operational Log:
“Atom this is MAZ-1. Radio Check”
“This is Atom, Read you loud and clear. How copy”
“MAZ-1 Good copy, ETA 30 seconds to insertion.”
“MAZ-1. Boots on the ground, squad comms are open. How copy?”
“Atom copies all. I’ll key in to guide you. Godspeed”
The live feed shows the squad exiting the APC and setting security. The front soldier turns to Sgt. Gasick.
“Sgt, I can’t see 50 feet in this haze… I don’t like this”
“Me neither. Atom, You seeing how thick this fallout is?”
Sgt. Gasick's feed shows a thick orange haze surrounding the unit. Visibility is estimated at less than 35 meters.
Still taken from live feed during the operation
“Atom copies your visual, proceed east to the reactor.”
“Sgt, i think i heard something in front of us.”
“Do you see anything?”
“No Sgt… the noise stopped”
“Then fuck this place, let’s move quick.”
Agent Davies sees something on the feed and keys in
“MAZ-1, You have somebody to your direct front, confirm visual”
The squad halts.
“Sgt, I don't see anything…"
Gasick moves up for a better view.
“Atom, we have no visual. What do you have on the feed?”
“MAZ-1, It looks like people. 3 figures, in the haze in front of you. They’re stationary.”
“I don’t see them. Does anyone see anything?!”
Agent Davies records a screenshot, then looks back at the feed. The figures have disappeared.
“MAZ-1 be advised they’re gone. May have been a camera glitch, proceed with caution.”
“That's one hell of a camera glitch Atom. We’re on the move”
feed shows the team moving into a corridor. visibility is lower inside the building. The only light comes from the amber emergency lamps, and the lights from the squad's weapons. Gasick's feed pans over two bodies face up in the middle of the hall.
“Atom, we found bodies. You and you, check them”.
Two soldiers approach the bodies and see their ID cards
“Plant workers Sgt. Looks to be radiation. They didn’t make it out in time.”
“Atom, not all the plant workers made it out in ti-”
“OH Jesus Fuck he moved!”
The soldier recoils and readies his rifle before being grabbed by his team leader, who tries to calm him.
“I SAW HIM. HE FUCKING TWITCHED”.
Sgt Gasick looks at the bodies, then at his squad. All eyes are on the workers. Gasick hesitates, then steps over the bodies.
“Rookie, I hate this place as much as you, but no one else saw him move. Let’s move gents, we can’t wait out the radiation."
Gasick watches the rest of the squad step over the bodies, then follows his men down the hall towards the reactor. Halfway down the hall, a loud crash is picked up by the feed. the entire squad freezes. Gasick turns, and shoulders his rifle.
The bodies are gone.
“Atom, What the hell is this thing We’re after?”
“MAZ-1, That’s classified, but there is nothing to worry about. Continue to the reactor controls, complete your mission, and ignore anything abnormal you see.”
Gasick moves to the front of the squad.
“Easy for you to say Atom. Squad, I've got point. Move out.”
The squad rounds the corner to the control room hallway and freezes. The feed shows an empty hallway. Raising his rifle, Gasick calls out.
“FREEZE! Identify yourself!”
Gasick opens fire. The feed fills with noise as the rest of the squad joins in. A bullet clips a coolant pipe and fills the hall with steam. The feed goes blind as the gunfire continues. The steam clears as the gunfire stops. Gasick seems to be looking around, confused.
“MAZ-1 what the hell were you engaging?”
“Atom, you didn’t see the feed?”
“There was nothing on the feed MAZ-1. What the hell?”
“Hell is a good word for this Atom. Screw confidential, I need to know what we are dealing with.”
“MAZ-1, you know everything I do. All I can confirm is that the anomaly is the fuel rods. It can cause hallucinations and audible noise. There should be no physical threat.”
“Should be? That’s fucking confidence inspiring Atom.”
A figure stumbles into the hall and sees the squad.
“Jesus Atom, we have contact front, does your feed confirm?”
“MAZ-1, I see it too.”
Gasick raises his rifle, but the figure calls out
“ARE YOU REAL?”
Sgt Gasick approaches through the haze. The feed shows a plant worker in a radiation suit.
“Yes. Are you?”
The figure collapses. The squad advances past Sgt. Gasick as he kneels next to the man. He begins to speak in Russian.
"Один настоящий! Спаси меня, пожалуйста!"
Sgt. Gasick begins to help the man to his feet.
“Atom, did you get all that?”
“MAZ-1, I did. How's your russian?"
"Passable. He says; One is real. Please save me"
"MAZ-1, the mission is still the same. Use your discretion”
An emergency lamp at the end of the hall goes out. Then another. The phenomenon begins to close in on the squad.
“Atom…?”
“MAZ-1 I see it too”
“Shit. Go for the control room!”
The lights fail faster as the squad begins to run. Over the frantic breathing of the soldiers, a nuclear siren can be heard on the feed. The worker falls, and Gasick's feed catches a scream as he runs, but he makes it in as the men slam the doors to the control room, and bar themselves inside. A resounding crash rocks the doors on their hinges, leaving a bulge In the thick steel.
“Atom! Please tell me I’m crazy!”
Agent Davies does not immediately respond. The feed shows the doors beginning to buckle as the siren wails.
“ATOM, ARE WE GOING TO FUCKING DIE HERE?!?!?”
“NO MAZ-1, you’re crazy. Hit the emergency shutdown now!”
Sgt. Gasick runs to the controls and activates the emergency shutdown. The siren goes quiet. The only sound is the soldiers' rapid breathing.
“Squad, are we all accounted for?”
The squad begins to check its equipment. Sgt. Gasick walks to the doors and removes the bar.
“Atom, this is MAZ-1, Mission accomplished, moving to extraction.”
He opens the door and looks down the hallway. The feed shows it full of emergency lights.
“MAZ-1, Atom copies, you’re clear for extraction. Cleanup teams are en route.”
Gasick runs his hand over the massive bulges in the control room doors.
“Atom, I wasn’t crazy, was I?”

I: “this concludes the interview portion of my report. Determined cause is a failure in the support beams supporting the mine entrance. Recommend stronger supports be installed in new mines to avoid loss of productivity in the future.
Addendum: "I traveled to Romania and conducted some interviews on this incident 92 after we finished up in Ozyorsk. from what I understand, 3 miners were involved in the incident, but They seem to have just disappeared. I'm attaching the only photo I could find of the miners. Something about it makes me uneasy, but I just can't put my finger on it."
