Initial codename: "The Paragraph"

It has been reported by the area newspaper, the Regina Leader Post (September 1998) in an obscure newspaper article, an unnamed 86 year old male from the nearby town of Wilcox, Saskatchewan was reading a copy of L. Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz" when he came across the following paragraph:

"The Scarecrow and tHELPe Tin Woodman were rather frightened at first, for they reMEmbered how badly the Winged monkeys had treated them before; but they saw no harm was Intended, so they rode through the AMir quiTRAPPEDe cheerfully, and had a fINSIDEe time looking at THISe PARAGRAPHretty gardens and woods far below them."

An anecdote further reported that this had so disturbed the male, he attempted to show his surviving relatives, his son and daughter-in-law the paragraph, only for the text never to show up during the viewing.

Further anecdotes reported that after the male had died in August of 2004, the son and daughter-in-law had started to also report sightings in other books and in a popular periodical, a Sports Illustrated (The Red Sox issue).

The SCP Foundation got word and detained both the son and their family for questioning, and gathered all book within their possession.

The son and family could provide no firm details about the entity that is communicating with them nor why they were chosen for the communication. Further, they could provide no explanation as to why the son's father was contacted by the entity.

The following experiments were performed by the SCP organization regarding the matter.

Experiment [xxxx]-1:
A non-lethal robot with a camera was sent in to the containment room with instructions to open one of the confiscated books and informed to turn the pages. No affected paragraphs were observed during this experiment. This leads to the hypothesis that the affected books require human interaction.

Experiment [xxxx]-2:
One D-class volunteer was sent in with instructions to read any book within the containment area. The volunteer had reported that within the third chapter of the book that he was reading (a copy of 'Treasure Island'): "I almost missed it. Right in the middle. The paragraph contained one word "HELLO?". Question mark and all. I thought my eyes were playing tricks, but I re-read it again and it was as plain as day. It just said "HELLO?". The D-class volunteer recorded one other incident near the end of the book where he spotted the phrase "WHO…ARE…YOU?". The D-class volunteer was released back to his cell with no adverse effects reported. It should be noted that since this encounter, this D-class volunteer has reported similar sightings in other books. In his words "It's been following me around", followed by strict instructions to never read any books or magazine outside of his cell. This lead to this author giving it the SAFE classification.

Experiment [xxxx]-3:
Photographs of various types (from physical photograph to a computer generated photograph) and various grades (from poor quality to high quality) have been made of these books, read both by a D-class volunteer and by a robot. While the physical photographs clearly show the words produced by the entity, clearly pointed out by the D-class volunteer, the computer generated photographs have failed to reproduce the exact same words. This has lead to the conclusion that the affected books do not respond to digital reproduction.

Containment Procedures:
The affected books are contained on a wooden shelf in a small room. Because of the nature of the entity, all D-class volunteers affected by the books are not permitted to read outside of their own cell, and all books within their cell are assumed to be affected by the same entity.

Examination Procedures:
Only one D-class volunteer is allowed to read the books at any one time. It has been reported the entity will respond if the D-class volunteer is genuinely reading the book. The method of communication between the entity and the reader is currently unknown. The research team may take notes digitally within the proximity of the containment room and while interviewing the affected D-class volunteers. Paper notes are not allowed for fear of spreading the presence of the entity. Because of the non-lethal nature of the entity, no other dangers have been reported.
