She ran the back of her left hand against the cold, metal wall. The temporary feeling of cold through through the red, somewhat star shaped birthmark on her hand made the pain numb, if only for a minute.

She turned her head toward the inside of the room, the bed creaking as she did so. Near the window, a bookshelf stood to block direct sunlight from hitting her. On the bookshelf, several novels lay neglected. "…." The deafening sound of silence radiated throughout the room.

"…."

The little girl said nothing as she slowly got up from the creaky bed and moved toward the bookshelf. The concrete floor scratched the slightly calloused soles of her feet worse than they already were. She picked up one of the books, only to put it down moments after. The doctors in the white coats had forgotte
