Concept Summary: A tattoo design that eats people. Hard to contain, but not actually very dangerous to the world at large. Probably an AWCY project, but will leave ambiguous.
Status: Main body fully drafted, addenda in need of more content, pictures (at least 1 photo and 2 drawings) should be made/commissioned for quality.
Item #: SCP-JBAA [Pending Permanent Designation & Approval]
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures: One (1) hard copy each of all known SCP-JBAA-A instances and photodocumentation of SCP-JBAA-B remnants are to be kept on file in the low-risk wing of the Site 11 anomalous document sector, cabinet JBAA. Collected samples of SCP-JBAA-B are to be kept in a standard biological samples containment unit at site 11 or incinerated, with no more than 5 active and 10 inert samples retained for study at one time.
Once per week, a member of site staff with clearance level 2/JBAA or higher is to access low-risk anomalous document cabinet JBAA and check that all documents listed as containing an instance of SCP-JBAA-A still do. If any are missing, MTF Kappa-47 (“Petty Crooks”) will be notified of the disappearance and the location(s) where the instance was discovered to narrow the search for the new instance of SCP-JBAA-B.
A network of bots is to be deployed to drag the internet for SCP-JBAA-A images, which are to be logged, copied to Foundation database, and deleted from the web. If questions are raised about the image, agents are to claim the images were stolen and had to be taken down for copyright claims. Any online users found posting or sharing SCP-JBAA-A instances are to be logged and tracked.
Agents briefed on SCP-JBAA will be assigned to each operational zone judged by the Program Director to be at high risk of SCP-JBAA manifestations (a full list of such zones is provided in document JBAA-5) and systematically inspect tattoo parlors for SCP-JBAA-A instances. Additional field agents are to be briefed on SCP-JBAA and held on reserve to assume the inspection schedules of any agents in high-risk zones should they become indisposed, and perform irregular inspections on tattoo parlors in remaining operational zones when not required for that duty.
Upon discovering an instance of SCP-JBAA-A, agents are to contain immediately if possible to do so discreetly. If this is not possible, agents are to notify MTF Kappa-47 and observe and report until the team arrives to assume operational control. Kappa-47 will then perform a standard breaking-and-entering containment operation overnight, preferably 1 hour after all nearby businesses have closed—though this timetable may be advanced or delayed with approval of project lead.
If a customer should show interest in the design between discovery of an SCP-JBAA-A instance and successful containment, all agents on site are authorized to use their discretion to prevent a member of the public from selecting it or applying it to anyone. Agents are authorized to use force and aerosolized class-A amnestics if needed, provided doing so would not raise public alarm. Agents are also authorized to contain the object by procedure JBAA-C-78, but are advised that they do so at great personal risk.
Should a member of the public become a host to SCP-JBAA-B, all agents on site are to observe the host until suitable circumstances can be arranged to neutralize the instance or pacify its host without raising public alarm, at which point the instance shall be excised from the host and transported to containment.
Description: SCP-JBAA is a series of anomalous tattoo designs featuring a toothed or beaked orifice in a diverse range of art styles corresponding to no known terrestrial animal. These always include features anatomically distinctive of a primarily carnivorous diet, and are drawn in such a way as to appear to grow out of any skin to which it is applied.
Instances of SCP-JBAA-A appear spontaneously in tattoo parlor art books and on websites where tattoo designs are shared, and have mild memetic effects on all observers. Such instances manifest at a typical rate of 2 per month, but this rate has been known to increase to as high as 6 per month. All observers of the design, irrespective of whether or not they have interest in tattoos or are aware of its effects, will regard the design as being of markedly high quality and uniqueness, frequently making comments to this effect, but still exhibit their usual preferences in subjective style, showing no statistically significant difference in their likelihood of selecting the design over non-anomalous tattoo designs of similar style or subject matter for their demographic and psychological profile, or in their likelihood to seek a tattoo in the first place.
Furthermore, anyone asked to apply the design shown in an instance of SCP-JBAA-A to living human skin will see no issue with doing so, even if warned of the dangers involved beforehand. Subjects can be convinced to not do so in a specific case if interrupted by outside forces, such as field agents, but will not recognize the design as anomalous of their own accord when such service is requested.
Once the design is successfully applied to living human skin, the tattoo will immediately manifest the properties of SCP-JBAA-B and the subject receiving the tattoo will become its host. All copies of the particular SCP-JBAA-A instance will disappear immediately upon manifestation of its respective -B instance. Memories, written descriptions, metadata tags, and other data referencing the SCP-JBAA-A instance are unaffected, but do not retain any anomalous properties. Likewise, reconstructions of the instance can be produced from this data or the observation of the SCP-JBAA-B instance, and have no anomalous properties.
If the host is not directly visually observed for a period of one (1) minute or longer at any time, flesh will begin dematerializing from the host at a rate of approximately fifty (50) cubic centimeters per second (cm3/s), in discrete, roughly spherical chunks, starting with the region immediately surrounding the patch of skin onto which SCP-JBAA-B was applied and then proceeding to the nearest vital areas. The host is aware of the process, and will respond as if being mauled and devoured by a wild animal. If this process is uninterrupted, death by extreme trauma typically occurs within 30-180 seconds, depending on where SCP-JBAA-B was applied. Full skeletonization of an average adult occurs within 15-20 minutes.
An instance of SCP-JBAA-B can be neutralized by any collection of wounds that destroy 25% or more of the ink outlining the orifice, or severs that same amount cleanly and completely from the remaining 75%.
