A photograph of SCP-4237 acquired during the initial containment, taken prior to knowledge of it's anomalous properties.
Item #: SCP-4237
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4237 is to be kept in an airtight container unless being studied for research. SCP-4237 is to be stored in a small room individually, with a sign which clearly reads “MEDICAL PERSONNEL DO NOT ENTER UNLESS AUTHORIZED.” The container must be stored at a site where no medical research occurs, and which does not contain medically-related SCPs. The site cannot be within 50 kilometers of a civilian hospital.
Personnel handling SCP-4237 are to wear a full scuba wetsuit, oxygen tank included, at all times. All researchers studying SCP-4237, regardless of whether it is in it’s container, are to wear scuba gloves and a scuba mask hooked up to an oxygen tank. Researchers may wear a wetsuit if they so choose, but provided the object is in it’s container, long-sleeved clothes such as a lab coat will suffice.
No medical equipment of any sort is to be brought near SCP-4237 unless specifically authorized. Individuals who are suspected of having made skin-to-skin contact with SCP-4237 or who display any flu-like symptoms are to be held in containment for decontamination for a minimum of one week.
Description: SCP-4237 is a medical hazmat suit from the early 20th century, belonging to the ███ █████ foundation. The anomalous properties of this object are due to the fact that all instances of Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 in contact with the suit will survive for an indefinite period of time, as opposed to expiring after a few days. These instances of the virus will be referred to as SCP-4237-A. SCP-4237 is covered in instances of SCP-4237-A, and attempts to decontaminate the suit using traditional means (e.g. chemical disinfection) have proved unsuccessful. Individuals who make direct skin contact with SCP-1917, including the wearer, will contract SCP-4237-A.
SCP-4237-A is a strain of Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 identical to it’s non-anomalous counterpart in all but one regard: if SCP-4237-A comes into contact with otherwise non-anomalous medical gear, such as masks, hazmat suits, or latex gloves, it will convert the item into an instance of SCP-4237-B. Non-medicinal gear, even if used for medical purposes, will be unaffected. SCP-4237-B possess the same anomalous properties as its predecessor.
Once SCP-4237-A is separated from SCP-4237-B, it has the same lifespan as an average strain of Influenza A subtype H1N1. Viruses produced from the cells of an individual who has contracted SCP-4237-A will not have anomalous properties. However, instances of SCP-4237-A can still create instances of SCP-4237-B if they come into contact with a suitable object prior to their expiration.
Infected subjects begin to show symptoms consistent with an influenza infection four days after exposure. However, tests have shown that instances of SCP-4237-A remain active until six days after exposure.
Addendum: SCP-4237 is classified as euclid due to the fact that it’s anomalous properties coexist with already difficult to contain non-anomalous properties of the virus. This often masks it’s anomalous properties to the outside observer, who may chalk up the rapid contagion to other factors. Because it’s anomalous properties are not immediately recognizable, it is possible there are unreported instances of SCP-4237 that the Foundation is not yet aware of. However, instances of SCP-4237-B can be destroyed as if they were non-anomalous. Hopefully, because the Foundation successfully contained SCP-4237 in 1919, all unknown instances of SCP-4237-B are medical gear which has become outdated and have been destroyed or decommissioned without interference from the Foundation.
