Item #: SCP-5289

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: Due to the range of SCP-5289’s anomalous properties, SCP-5289 is to be kept within a small, airtight containment room off of Site-██. SCP-5289 is to remain in its original pot, with no changes to any of the soil it resides in necessary. Automatic systems are to regularly water and fertilize SCP-5289. Additionally, personnel with a history of depression or suicidal tendencies are prohibited from entering SCP-5289’s containment cell.

Description: SCP-5289 is an anomalous potted species of Wineberries (Rubus phoenicolasius). SCP-5289 seems to be incapable of producing Fruit, has small, reddish leaves, and seems unable to reproduce, although testing shows that it’s composition is the same as a normal bush of Wineberries. Alongside these unusual attributes, SCP-5289 does not seem to naturally grow unless noticeable samples are removed from the plant during testing, in which case it will regrow missing branches, leaves or roots at an average rate. The pot SCP-5289 was recovered in contains a label, reading “Whineberries”, although it is unknown who made the label.

Whenever a person weeps within six (6) m of SCP-5289, SCP-5289 will rapidly extend it’s branches in an attempt to constrict the person’s neck, arms, and legs, restraining them until they have successfully killed the individual, at which point SCP-5289 will release it’s hold. SCP-5289 will then rapidly convert back to its original state. SCP-5289 seems to immediately know whenever someone within its range is crying, and will attempt to find any errors in walls, flooring or roofs in order to kill it's target.

SCP-5289 was recovered on 5-14-201█ in a small home in Austin, Texas. SCP-5289 was discovered in the home's living room, next to the corpse of a man, later identified as Eric Bateman, who seems to have been strangled to death by SCP-5289. Medical records showed that Bateman had been going through a depressive episode brought on by a recent divorce, presumably why SCP-5289’s anomalous properties were triggered, although how Bateman came into possession of SCP-5289 is currently unknown.

Testing log:

Subject: D-1444
Subject was handed a picture of his Wife, who had died in a car crash.
Result: Subject began crying upon thinking about his Wife’s death. Twenty seconds later, SCP-5289’s branches rapidly extended, restraining the D-class. Personnel rushed in to help him, but were met with resistance from the plant, as they were unsuccessful in rescuing the D-class before he died.
Notes: SCP-5289 proves to be extremely resistant to outside forces upon being triggered. The branches would not break, despite the D-class being pulled back by three staff members.

Subject: D-1445
Subject was exposed to tear gas before entering SCP-5289’s containment room.
Result: After twenty seconds, SCP-5289 began extending it’s branches, at which point personnel quickly dragged D-1445 out of the room, leaving SCP-5289 to return to it’s passive form.
Notes: It seems that SCP-5289 does not particularly care if it’s target is crying on its own accord or not.

Subject: One adult German Shepherd
Subject hadn’t been fed in a few days, and was physically kicked into SCP-5289’s containment room, at which point it started moping around the room.
Result: SCP-5289 strangled the German Shepherd to death.
Notes: “I get that the ethics committee don’t want to use people, but did we have to use a poor dog?”

Subject: A laptop set to play a thirty second video of a baby crying
Result: SCP-5289 rapidly extended its branches towards the laptop, but movement observed seemed to display confusion, as the plant couldn’t strangle any body parts. SCP-5289 proceeded to fling one of its branches at the laptop, slamming it into a nearby wall, and quickly returned to its previous state.
