Scp-0: Gardener’s Hell
Item #:0
Object class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP- 0 is to be kept in a special 10m by 10m concrete cell with a dip in the center filled with soil. It is located at Site-19 with no access to soil. Cell requires Level-2 or higher clearance.
Description: SCP-0 is a large tree of indeterminate species measuring 7-9 meters, depending on the growth of leaves and small branches and its trunk is 1.7m in diameter. Its leaves resemble that of a maple, but it’s trunk appears to be more like an oak, with branches spreading sideways at lower levels rather than directly upwards like some maples.

Description:
Its leaves have appear to be a rounded version of a maple, and grow in a orange-yellow colour which then turn to brown and fall off. When SCP-0 was first recovered, its leaves grew dark green and then turned yellow to brown but once it had been moved underground into Site-19 the leaves would only grow yellow then turn to brown.

SCP-0 creates leaves indefinitely, leaves turning brown and falling off within five minutes, but growth slows after 20:00 then starts again around 4:30, although it will fluctuate usually depending on the season of the environment around Site 19. Its cell must be cleaned of the leaves every other day, a process which has been automated by a set of mechanical arms which sweep them into a container where they can be either incinerated or composted for agricultural use. Use of the leaves in agriculture of plants for human consumption was ceased on [REDACTED] due to events regarding the health of D class personnel who had consumed food grown in composted leaves of SCP-0 (See test log 1-3). Personnel must have Level-2 or higher clearance to use SCP-0’s leaves for any usage.

On SCP-0’s trunk there is a large opening near the bottom that goes about 1 meter into the tree and is 1.6 meters high. Between 20:00 and 4:30, the lighting in the room will inexplicably dim or turn off, and anomalous creatures may appear inside the opening, which will exit slowly, pacing the room, the leaves rustling under their feet as if blown by the wind. Creatures will typically resemble animals commonly found in forests located in the northern hemisphere such as deer, wolves, bears, crows, and humanoids, although they can sometimes be described as a mix of several. Creatures are quite skeletal in appearance, their bones defining most of their shape, no exterior features are visible such as eyes, ears, and genitals although tails can be present. Recordings show the creatures performing no acts other than walking or occasional spasms in their limbs. Creatures will return to the opening, always before 4:30 disappearing promptly.

During attempts to trap or touch the creatures they were shown to cause weakness to human subjects, to the point where they would fall over and reported to also feel numbness in their hands reaching to touch the creatures. Attempts to touch and trap them with mechanical equipment and teams of personnel have had the same effects, with mechanical arms seizing up when near the creatures. The creatures will usually react, walking quickly away or back into the tree.

Initial reports of SCP-0 were received from [REDACTED] Austria, near the edge of a forest in the [REDACTED] region. Local authorities received reports of anomalous creatures in and around the forest visible from farmer’s fields along with the discovery of a strange tree with a much larger amount of leaves around it than the rest in that forest. Several local police investigated and noticed the creatures the civilians had seen. [REDACTED] soon became involved and the foundation was notified of the anomaly. The anomaly was easily contained, as it was not a threat to the local population and wildlife. Attempts to move the anomaly to a safe location consisted of an attempt to cut down the tree which ended in industrial forestry equipment becoming damaged during attempts to come near the tree. Personnel attempted to dig the tree out from the bottom but the roots could not be severed, so digging around the roots until their end allowed safe transport of the tree to Site-19.

The tree took root nearly instantly in the small divot of dirt in the cell, the concrete surrounding it showing damage from the roots, which was soon repaired and reinforced. Leaf production had not ceased during transport. Cell must remain secure so that foliage cannot contaminate ecosystems outside of site 17.

Test log 1:
Potatoes, eggplants, and pumpkins were the only seeds to take root and grow in the soil created by composting the leaves. D-10057 was the first subject to be instructed to eat the plants grown. He ate the raw potato, commenting that it would be better steamed or baked, and had an odd aftertaste. The eggplant was described as quite bitter although the texture was good, as if it was at the perfect level of ripeness. The pumpkin was described as mealy in texture, quite bland in taste. Several hours after consuming the vegetables he displayed signs of brain damage from excess amounts of moroidin in his bloodstream along with muscle damage throughout his body.

Test log 2:
Potatoes, eggplants, and pumpkins were used once again for this test, grown with a mix of soil and composted leaves instead of just composted leaves. D-19850 displayed severe discomfort while eating the vegetables, describing each of them as being mushy, and rotten tasting, despite appearing completely ripe. Approximately one hour after consumption he displayed severe abdominal pain and blemishes began to appear on his skin. 24 hours after testing he died from cardiac arrest.

Test log 3:
Potatoes, eggplants, and pumpkins were used once again for this test, this time grown in a slightly warmer environment and less composted leaves were used in the mix of soil.
Vegetables were reported to be much larger than previous samples, and grew much faster. D-6958 described the vegetables as quite enjoyable, particularly enjoying the eggplants and the pumpkins, even asking for more to eat. She ate nearly the entire crop of vegetables before thanking supervising personnel for the meal. Approximately half an hour after eating the vegetables D-6958 displayed feelings of discomfort in her abdomen along with severe indigestion, repeatedly asking to go to the bathroom.

D-6958 was returned to her cell after experiencing these symptoms for several hours, still under surveillance of cameras inside the cell. Urine and fecal samples were taken from D-6958’s lavatory for future testing. D-6958 soon fell asleep, loud digestive activity could be heard from microphones inside her cell and her abdomen appeared to pulsate unnaturally. Doctors detected D-6958’s organs working at nearly double capacity, high amounts of fat tissue were being created and D-6958’s weight was increasing. She began to twitch and shiver, her heart rate increasing rapidly. After nearly 17 hours, her heart rate began to slow to normal speed. She was reported to have gained over eighty pounds of weight, her body mildly deformed from the rapid growth. D-6958 was recorded waking up slowly then groaning loudly, rubbing her head and her stomach. Sedatives were administered soon after her waking up and she was taken into [REDACTED] for testing on vital signs and bodily changes. She was reported to be suffering from mild bruises and stress on skin tissue due to unexpected rapid growth. Her stomach was damaged mildly from stress, presumably from consuming large amounts of anomalous vegetables. She appeared to have no anomalous changes to her organs, and is now being kept in [REDACTED] in case of a need to test further.
