Special Containment Procedures: If an outbreak of SCP-5866 occurs, the surrounding area must be quarantined immediately. Subjects infected with SCP-5866 are to be administered class C amnestics after being questioned. The interviewers will be administered class C amnestics as well, in order to help stop the spread of SCP-5866. If not treated, subjects infected with SCP-5866 could develop severe psychological damage and in rare cases, suicidal tendencies may develop. It is important that the infected subject does not describe their dreams until the interview. Anyone that the subject may have spoken to about their dreams should be apprehended and administered amnestics as well. Two class D personnel are to be forcefully infected with SCP-5866 and kept in separate soundproof rooms at site-15 for experimental purposes. Personnel interacting with the infected D class must wear soundproof earmuffs at all times. The D class are to be replaced every 25 days in order to prevent severe psychological damage from occurring.
Description: SCP-5866 is a contagious memetic hazard that takes the appearance of a humanoid entity. SCP-5866 is sentient and will manifest inside an infected subject’s dream. Subjects infected with SCP-5866 usually describe it as a 7ft tall man with an olive green pigmentation and no facial features except for a large shark-like mouth with several rows of sharp teeth. Subjects also describe it as having four long boney arms and wearing a black hooded robe. The upper arms are in a similar location on the body to that of an average human and the location of the lower arms are directly under the upper arms.
When SCP-5866 appears inside a subject’s dream it will create horrific scenarios within the dream. These scenarios differ from person to person but they are usually related to the subject's fears, phobias, or past trauma. Brain scans of infected subjects show abnormally high brain activity when asleep compared to the average person. Dreams of SCP-5866 will last from 6 to 8 hours, and it is impossible to wake the subject once the dream has begun.
In order for SCP-5866 to spread, the infected subjects must describe their dreams of SCP-5866 to a non-infected subject. The next time a non-infected subject falls asleep, they will have a dream about SCP-5866. Once the subject has a dream about SCP-5866, they will be considered infected and should be treated as such. Viewing a recording of a subject describing their dreams of SCP-5866, will not cause it to spread. It has to be an in person conversation in order for SCP-5866 to spread. SCP-5866 is being considered as a tool for interrogation, but due to it’s unpredictable behavior, it is yet to be approved.
SCP-5866 was discovered on 4/12/2018 in Townsville, Queensland, Australia after SCP-5866 had infected the residents of a small apartment building. It became known to the Foundation after one of the residents, Henry Smith committed suicide. An undercover agent in the Townsville police department notified the Foundation after reading the subjects suicide note.
“If my family is reading this, I want you to know it is not your fault. There's a demon in my head and I can’t get it out. Every time I fall asleep it will torment me in my dreams. I tried to get rid of it but nothing works. I can't take it anymore, this is my last resort and my last goodbye.”
An investigation was launched to see if anything anomalous was occurring within the building. To prevent the residents from leaving, the building was quarantined and a cover story about a measles outbreak was made to not raise suspicion. Dr. Olsen was put in charge of the investigation, during this she interviewed several residents of the building. This was prior to knowing how SCP-5866 spreads.

Subject: I think he lost his mind. We're all losing our minds.
Dr. Olsen: Could you elaborate on that?
Subject: A lot of people have been having these horrific nightmares, including me.
Dr. Olsen: Can you describe these nightmares?
Subject: Every time I fall asleep, I have a dream about this four armed freak. The thing looks like a human but it ain't got much of a face. At first, the thing sounds oddly friendly, always saying “hello again friend”. After greeting me, he would stare at me with a devilish smile and say “it's time to play”.
Dr. Olsen: What happens when it’s time to play? Does the freak do anything else?
Subject: The damn thing would torture me! I have a fear of spiders, and you want to know what's the first thing it tortured me with? It tortured me by shoving me into a deep pit and began to vomit spiders into it. He put me in a pit full of spiders! It felt like I was in that damn pit for six hours. Six hours of spiders crawling all over me.
Dr. Olsen: Have you had any other dreams?
Subject: I had a dream where it trapped me in a cave system and had a two meter long spider made of human body parts, chase me through the cave. If it caught me, it would wrap me up in its damn web and start consuming me from the inside out. It’s just a dream, but it feels so real and I can't find a way to stop dreaming of it.

Subject: Yes I do. A demon did it.
Dr. Olsen: How do you know this?
Subject: I've been having dreams about a demon. A lot of people have been. Suicide is a sin and this demon is trying to get us to kill ourselves. It's trying to drag us down into hell.
Dr. Olsen: Can you give me a description of this demon?
Subject: It had four arms, wore a black robe and the only facial feature it had was a shark-like mouth.
Dr. Olsen: Can you describe these dreams?
Subject: It showed me hell! There were demons flying around me, people being tortured, Satan himself listing every sin I ever committed and all while I was being burned alive!
Dr. Olsen: Do you know why the demon’s here?
Subject: There's a Satan worshiper on the second floor in room seven. I blame him for this.

Subject: Okay, I guess. Every night I would have a dream about a monster.
Dr. Olsen: Did this monster have four arms, wore a black robe, and had a shark-like mouth?
Subject: Yes, how did you know?
Dr. Olsen: Lucky guess. Please continue.
Subject: Okay so the monster is friendly but it will torture me as the dream goes on.
Dr. Olsen: Can you elaborate on your dreams?
Subject: Um, okay then. There was one dream when my hands and feet were bolted to the floor. The room was pitch black, I couldn't see anything three feet away from me. One hour later the monster emerged from the darkness and said “hello again friend.” Then it loomed over me and began vomiting blood onto my face. It was like I was being waterboarded with blood. There was another dream where I was placed in a large dirt valley and the sky was covered in human corpses. The monster was standing about thirty meters away, when I saw him, the corpses started to scream and began gushing out blood. The valley began to fill up with blood and I began to drown. In another dream I had, I was being chased by the monster in a gothic looking slaughter house with organs strung around the place and it was like the walls were bleeding or something like that. The monster was holding two machetes and when it caught me it would pin me to the ground and plunge the machetes into my stomach. Then it would force me to keep running and it would chase me again. I know it was just a dream but it felt so real.
Dr. Olsen: What can you tell me about the man in room seven?
Subject: His name is Alex Taylor, he’s a little weird and some people call him a Satanic worshiper, but I don't think he is. … I just realised, I haven't seen him for awhile.

Addendum 5866-2: Two guards were sent to room seven to retrieve Alex Taylor for questioning. The guards found him dead in his bedroom closet, the cause of death has been determined to be suicide by severing the jugular vein. There is a series of unknown symbols carved into the bedroom floor in a circular pattern around the bed. It's theorized that the symbols are a form of ██████ but evidence for this has been debated.
The following day Dr. Olsen reported having similar dreams to that of the subjects she interviewed. Dr. Olsen theorized that SCP-5866 spreads through conversation, due to other researchers that reviewed the interview logs not being infected with SCP-5866. Due to this theory, Dr. Olsen refused to be interviewed, instead she recorded herself in order to stop the spread of SCP-5866.

<Begin Log>Okay, let's get this over with. My name is Dr. Tana Olsen, I was sent to this apartment building to investigate reports of some sort of dream demon. It turns out that there is a dream demon here and it turns out that the dream demon is contagious. It seems to spread through conversations, so that's why I'm here in the basement where no one could hear me. So I guess I’ll talk about my dream now. The people I interviewed described it as, oddly friendly and I can agree, the thing was oddly friendly. It even let me interview it. I asked it to describe itself, and it described itself as a parasitic entity that plants itself into a person's mind. It also said “I'm not a demon” and “I would like it if you stopped calling me that.” It refused to comment on its origins, and every time I asked about it, it would just stare at me until I asked a different question. I asked it about the nightmares and it replied with “well I don't have a physical form so I need to have people off themselves and if you're wondering why, it's just a hobby of mine.” When I asked it “why do you act so friendly?” It just smiled and said “it's nice to be nice” followed by “it's time to play.” It tortured me by tying me to the top of a dining table and feasting on my flesh. This thing seems to be able to trick the brain into thinking the torture is real. Luckily I have an idea of how to cure it though. Since this thing lives in the mind, amnestics should be able get rid of it.

Addendum 5866-3: Dr. Olsen volunteered to test class B amnestics on herself stating “I want this thing out of my head as soon as possible.” The following day Dr. Olsen reported having no dreams of SCP-5866. Class C amnestics had to be administered to the residents due to their prolonged exposure.
Addendum 5866-4|The North Bay Incident: An outbreak of SCP-5866 was discovered in North Bay, Ontario, Canada on 6/4/2020. The outbreak was discovered after a subject known as Zack Richter posted a YouTube video named “please watch this video.” The video consists of the subject describing his dreams of SCP-5866. The contents of the video was saved to an audio log and the original was deleted.

I had a dream about a monster. The monster looked like a human with four arms and had a face with a large mouth, no nose, no eyes, just a mouth. The monster wanted to show me something, he said it was very important. I said okay, you can show me. Then my girlfriend appeared. Her broken bones were covered with charred flesh, she kept saying “the crash was your fault” over and over again. I had the same dream three nights in a row. I begged the monster to make it stop and the monster told me to tell as many people I can, tell them about my dreams, then the dreams would stop. So, I thought making a YouTube video would be a good idea.

The subject was apprehended by MTF epsilon-6 (village idiots) disguised as North Bay police officers. When the subject was being apprehended he began screaming about his dreams of SCP-5866. Sixteen civilians could hear the subject's screams and all had to be quarantined. Class A amnestics were distributed amongst the civilians as well as the MTF team and the subject was interviewed.

Addendum 5866-6: Both the subject and the interviewer were administered amnestics and the subject was released from Foundation custody. It is crucial that the infected subject is found. MTF teams will continue to discreetly search for the subject.
