Granny's Scarf

Item #: SCP-xxxx

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-xxxx is to be kept inside the wooden box it was discovered in, and kept under low-level monitoring in Site-19 when not undergoing testing.

When undergoing testing, tests are to take place in a chamber with walls composed of 1m thick, high grade steel. Suitably armed personnel are to remain in the chamber for the duration of testing.

Description: SCP-xxxx is an aged, hand knitted, yarn scarf of approximately 91 cm in length and 7.5 cm in width. It bears a striping pattern from end to end alternating red, orange, and yellow, and possesses discoloration consistent with aging. It possesses 7.5 cm to 12.5 cm long tassels dangling from each end. Hanging off one of the tassels is a weathered and stained gift tag. Written on the tag is, "With great love, Grandma Celine" in black cursive handwriting. SCP-xxxx is estimated to be at least ██ years old based on subsequently discovered information.

SCP-xxxx's anomalous effects manifest only when wrapped around the neck of a human. Once wrapped around the neck those who don SCP-xxxx, hereafter referred to as SCP-xxxx-1, will immediately enter a state of immense joy, and have described a warm and pleasant feeling enveloping their body. Over the course of SCP-xxxx-1's time wearing SCP-xxxx, SCP-xxxx-1 will become progressively less responsive to stimuli, as they begin to slip into a deep sleep. Monitoring of SCP-xxxx-1 shows brain and behavioral patterns consistent with REM sleep. No form of external stimuli, neither audio nor physical, are shown to be capable of waking SCP-xxxx-1. Any attempts to awaken SCP-xxxx-1 by causing physical damage are met with failure. Long term monitoring of sleeping instances reveals no sign of long term harm from starvation or dehydration. It is presumed that SCP-xxxx-1 instances will remain alive in this state until death is either caused by an outside source, or by natural aging. Further, testing is required to ascertain if sickness can affect instances health.

SCP-xxxx-1 will remain in a state of slumber until attempts are made to remove SCP-xxxx, at which point SCP-xxxx-1 will jolt awake, and either run from or fight off those attempting to remove SCP-xxxx. When awakened, instances of SCP-XXXX-1 display increased physical strength, while retaining a seemingly endless tolerance for pain inflicted, and are capable of breaking through walls and barricades under a certain grade of strength with relative ease, regardless of physical build, and despite self-inflicted damage done in the process. Instances of SCP-xxxx-1 in awakened state seem to revert to a child-like mindset and exhibit extreme levels of paranoia, believing those attempting to remove SCP-xxxx are trying to kill them. When SCP-xxxx-1 can visually confirm it is no longer being pursued, it will cease threatening activity, and re-enter sleep.

When fully restrained, SCP-xxxx-1 will enter a state of enormous panic and begin screaming and attempting to break free. The moment SCP-xxxx is removed, SCP-xxxx-1 will release a sustained scream for approximately 4 seconds before beginning to panic again and enter behavior analogous to drowning. After 20 seconds of this behavior, SCP-xxxx-1 will cease breathing. Attempts to perform CPR and any further medical intervention have failed to revive instances in all cases. Thermal imaging during death throes indicate a drastic initial decrease in temperature upon removal of SCP-xxxx. After death, the body will slowly continue to cool, and a layer of frost gathers on the entire corpse. After approximately 10 hours, bodies will stop cooling and retain a temperature of -6.1 °C until outside efforts are made to warm the body.

SCP-xxxx itself also shows incredible resistance to damage. No conventional means have been shown to be effective in destroying, or otherwise damaging SCP-xxxx. Continued resistance testing utilizing other SCPs is recommended.

Discovery: The Foundation was made aware of SCP-xxxx when the first known instance of its anomalous effects were reported from a storeroom in the ████████ ████ Museum in ██████, England. Foundation personnel arrived at site, and after much difficulty, secured SCP-xxxx without extensive public exposure. Upon investigation of the storeroom, the box containing SCP-xxxx was discovered, in addition to a cabinet card of roughly the same age as SCP-xxxx depicting a lower-middle class family of four. Of note in the photo is a young boy donning SCP-xxxx, despite surroundings suggesting weather inappropriate for such apparel. Personnel administered amnestics to all witnesses and brought SCP-xxxx into containment at Site-19. Attempts to trace back the origin of the photo have mostly met in failure, save for a newspaper article dated 13-01-████ detailing the discovery of a [DATA EXPUNGED] on the ██████ River.
