William walked behind the Employment Officer as she toured him around the SuperMall. The modernized mall was eerily silent, the only sounds were the echoing click-clack of his new managers heels. William hadn’t exactly been fired from his last job. But he was definitely not employed anymore. He wasn’t sure how long it would take to fix the grill and the fryer but it would take longer than he was willing to wait for another paying job. A&W sucked anyways, his manager was an asshole and hated him for some reason.
“Over there is the SuperFood court. You’ll be spending most of your time there.” The woman said. Despite her just saying that it was the the place that he’d be in the most, she didn’t seem too willing to stick around. She nervously looked around, then hurriedly kept walking past it. As William walked past, he suddenly caught a strange smell. It was like flowers, but it smelled like food, like really good food.
“What’s that smell?” William asked, the woman paused and looked back at him.
“The new place, Lotus Cafe.” She turned around quickly again and walked so fast that William had to jog to catch up.
About an hour later, William was standing at the counter of the Subway section of the SuperFood court, drooling over the smell emanating from the Lotus Cafe. He watched covertly as various customers walked past the Subway and straight to the delicious smelling cafe. William sighed in boredom and leaned over the counter at the employees behind the counter at the Lotus. There was a young woman smiling widely as she took orders. Several flowers that he assumed were lotus flowers were planted in hanging pots seemed to provide much of the attractive smell. Strangely though, the flower petals were all curved upwards to form a cup-like shape. The drinks were served in cups that seemed to follow the theme of the strange flowers, a stem provided the handle. He checked the clock, two hours until his break. He sighed again and watched more customers walk by.
An hour and fifty-eight minutes later, William tried to suppress the urge to simply just leave a few minutes early and purchase a drink. He looked over at the manager of the Subway who was sitting in the back room. He smirked and nodded at him, then made a shooing motion. William couldn’t hold back a grin and he hung up his perfectly clean and unused apron then left.
The line was going to kill him, he was behind at least five people who weren’t exactly paying attention. He had to keep tapping on the shoulder of the lady in front of him to get her to move forwards in the line. And she looked like she would smack him the next time he did it. The woman at the counter handed the kid his hot-chocolate and said, “Can I serve who’s next?” A man stepped forwards and examined the order board above him.
“A caffé mocha?” She asked politely. The man seemed surprised.
“Y-yea that would be great.” The man stammering a little.
“Alrighty we’ll have that out for you in just a few.” The cashier said brightly, and walked into the back. The man stepped back and looked down at his phone to check something but quickly looked back up as the woman said, “Here’s your order sir.” William blinked and was shocked at how quickly she had made the drink. She had only been gone for a few seconds, the man seemed just as surprised as William was. He sipped his drink and his eyes widened. The man fumbled with his wallet and handed her a credit card. She accepted it, deftly swiped it in her cash register, then handed it back to the dazed man. He man took his drink to a nearby table and stared at it for a moment before resuming his drink. William was still stunned at how fast the drink came and at the mans reaction that he didn’t notice that he was next in line.
“I can serve whoever’s next!” She called. William blinked and stepped forwards, he hadn’t paid any attention to the order board and was about to look up at it but the cashier spoke before he could look.
“Would you like to try our Lotus Supreme?” She asked. William stammered for a bit, the overpoweringly delicious smell of the potted lotuses were making him feel lightheaded. He faintly heard himself saying, “Yes please.” And seconds later, she returned with his drink. In the back kitchen, he caught sight of another lotus flower, this one had a light pink liquid dripping from its petals. He was about to pull out his own wallet but the cashier held up a manicured hand. “SuperMall employees drink free!” She said with a smile. William nodded and slipped his wallet back into his pocket. He took a whiff of his drink and the next thing he knew, he was sitting at a table with a flower cup in his hand. He examined the cup more closely, it felt like a real flower strangely enough. It had the texture and the colors right. William pinched the tip of one of the leaves making up the cup and was surprised to see that it tore off. He could see the green inside of the leaf. He was about to take his drink but he noticed that the cashier was watching him. He focused on her instead and watched her out of the corner of his eye. She was just staring at him, her bright smile was gone and was replaced bt a slight frown. Then her eyes narrowed and she started walking around the counter to his table. He nervously looked down at his drink, was it spiked with drugs or something? Could that be why he felt so…strange. He had to concentrate hard to think of the word.
“Everything all right?” She asked. William read the name on her name tag, “Hello! My name is Sariah!”
“Yes yes. I just…” William trailed off, his voice just giving out. He cleared it again, but forgot what he was saying.
“I’m so sorry, I…forgot what I was saying.” Sariah smiled knowingly.
“It’s alright. Enjoy your drink!” William watched her walk away, then looked back down at his drink. He hesitantly took a sip…
Every part of William’s body tingled and relaxed. A feeling of euphoria drowned out every thought in his brain. He raised the cup to his lips and drank the rest. He nearly passed out from how absolutely delicious it was. The taste was undefinable, like nothing close to anything he had ever tasted before. He slumped in his seat, his hat falling off of his head as he shrunk. The top of his head split into multiple sections as the meat of his brain withered and died leaving room for his anthers to sprout. His arms thinned out and took on a green hue as his fingers fused together and flattened out. His legs melted together and thinned as well forming his stem. William lost his senses, but gained new ones as well. His vision left him but his sense of touch rocketed up. His sense of taste replaced his hearing and smell. Sariah walked back over to Williams table and picked up the beautiful lotus flower that was left on the seat. She tipped it back over her mouth and a stream of liquid poured out. She could taste…caramel macchiato. Sariah smiled as she carefully carried the flower to the kitchen and inserted it into a machine that would automatically tip the flower for her and dispense the liquid. She felt the slight pressure on her forehead that announced the arrival of new customers.. She quickly walked up to the front counter and smiled as brightly as she could. One of them looked like a cappuccino, “Two new beverages in one day.” She thought absentmindedly. As the young girls approached the counter.
