Item #: SCP-4764
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4764 is to be kept in a secure locker in an anomalous items storage warehouse located at Site-87. SCP-4764 is to be kept unplugged at all times. As of ██/██/2017, SCP-4764 is not to be actively tested. As such, SCP-4764 is not to be removed from its locker without the written permission of at least three members of the Overseer council Level 4 clearance and a report explaining the circumstances behind removal sent to supervising researcher Dr. Millner. Dr. Millner is given the right to dispense Class-A amnestics on researchers who have formally utilized or accessed classified information regarding SCP-4764 as he sees fit. In accordance with Referendum-4764 all writing utensils on hand at Site-87 are to mechanically dispense lead or utilize ink.
Description: SCP-4764 is an electric pencil sharpener manufactured by the Bostitch company under the product label QuietSharp 6. The object is consistent in make and model with other QuietSharp 6 pencil sharpeners. The only modification to the sharpener is the words “Time Shredder” written in white sharpie on the top of it (source of this writing is unknown; sources at time of recovery indicated they did not know who wrote it). SCP-4764 was recovered from █████████ Middle School in █████████, Ohio on 09/15/17 after a classroom discovered it’s anomalous effects and Foundation plants in the local police force were called in to investigate. Class-A amnestics were distributed amongst the population and the anomalous item was brought in to Site-87 as SCP-4764.
SCP-4764’s anomalous effects manifest whenever it is used to sharpen a standard wooden pencil. When the pencil is removed from the object, the person holding the pencil (similar results have not been replicated with the operator of a robotic arm) receives a five second long vision. The vision completely dominates the view of the subject. They are not able to observe their own body parts in most visions. However, turning their head does allow them to look around the envisioned “environment” as if they were there (this only applies in visions were the subject was not present; experiments involving the observer being in the same place in both reality and the vision). The subject is able to move and speak as normal when experiencing the vision, but is unable to see and hear its current environment while experiencing the vision. Touch, smell, and taste are still functional.
The environment simulated by SCP-4764 is the location where the subject sharpened the pencil as it appeared a variable amount of time in the past. The vision is an exact match of the location at that point in time, including persons present at that time, including the subject if they would have been visible from that angle. In certain visions persons have been able to “pass through” where the observer should be to no ill effects (although some uncomfortable visuals have been reported; see Addendum 4764-A: Experiment Log). It is a true vision; attempts to move or interact with the past in ways other than looking around have met with no success.
The amount of time the subject is able to see in the past is variable and depends on the amount of pencil shavings produced by SCP-4764. For instance, a quick shave only allows a vision of a few seconds into the past, typically of the subject in the act of sharpening the pencil. Shaving a standard No. 2 pencil down to its eraser has resulted in a vision of ████ minutes prior. Foundation researchers have tried different brands, filling, colors, and length and reached two main conclusions.
- The amount of shavings produced is the chief factor in determining how long ago the vision will be. While other factors may produce slightly varied results, the amount of time spent/shavings produced in the act of sharpening being higher results in a further back vision for the subject.
- SCP-4764 only produces a vision of the place it is currently located in. Visions are centered around the location the sharpening takes place in, not the past locations of the subject or object.
There is also a third, tentative conclusion: there is a limit on the age of visions produced by SCP-4764. Final experiments before cessation of testing was ordered indicate a maximum oldest vision as being from 336 hours (14 days) prior.
