Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: When not being tested, SCP-XXXX is held inside a storage crate at Site 23. Seeing as the object is inert by itself, no other containment procedures are necessary. Anyone wishing to experiment with SCP-XXXX must get authorization from Dr. Sorts.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a gilded wooden picture frame approximately 52” x 38” in size. Style and wear are consistent with the 17th century. The anomalous effects of the picture frame become apparent when a painting, picture, or image is placed inside it. Sound, movement, and smells corresponding to the contents of the picture can be observed a few seconds to a half hour after its placement within the frame. The mechanism by which SCP-XXXX does this is not clear. Testing so far has indicated the medium of the picture does not matter and that activity will still occur. All activity will cease after 2 to 10 hours. "Living" occupants of each picture are sapient and can be communicated with and behave consistently with their real life counterparts.

It was brought to the foundations attention when a recreation of “Judith Beheading Holofernes” was placed in the frame at the ██████████ ██████ in Rome, Italy. After a few minutes Loud screaming and the sound of viscera and bone breaking were heard accompanied with a strong metallic smell, likely blood.

Addendum: Dr. █████ Test Log

Input Result
A photograph of Junior Researcher ███████ writing on a notepad. After approximately 11 minutes, the photograph (SCP-XXXX-1) became animate and could be observed writing something on her notepad. SCP-XXXX-1's movements were very realistic and the perfume Researcher ███████ was wearing could be smelt. Dr. █████ asked SCP-XXXX-1 several questions about herself to which she responded in Junior Researcher ███████s voice. Junior Researcher ███████ later verified the questions were all answered correctly. After 3 hours and 10 minutes activity ceased
A crudely drawn picture of Junior Researcher ███████. After 13 minutes the drawing (SCP-XXXX-2) became animate. Movement was not nearly as fluid and SCP-XXXX-2 seemed to be struggling to move. The same questions that were asked to SCP-XXXX-1 were asked to SCP-XXXX-2 and were answered similarly, but with poor grammar and pronunciation consistent with that of a child. Activity ceased after 1 hour and 14 minutes. A smell of ammonia lingered in the room for a few hours after testing.
