Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be stored in a designated corkboard on the upper floor of the facility library At the behest of Dr. Warren following an incident in the library, SCP-XXXX will no longer be treated as a novelty to be tested recreationally, and is to be taken seriously from this point onward. The item is now kept in a 4cm by 3cm by 3cm metal container, within a 4 meter by 5 meter room with solid steel walls no less than 5 cm thick. This room is to be fitted with chemical sensors to detect any change in the chemical composition of the environment, with proper ventilation so as to pump all air directly outside.
SCP-XXXX is not to be left in the corkboard unsupervised and is to be placed back in its metal container after daily testing has concluded. As of test 22-B, researchers are prohibited from preforming direct testing, and are instead to use Class D personnel to carry out all further experiments. All testing is to be closely monitored, documented, and compiled into an archive for future study.
Effective immediately as of test 98-A:, at least 80-100 tests are to be preformed daily. This will be enforced. Any tests which require amnestics of any kind be administered to testing D Class are to be reported directly to the site director, who will then determine the need for any amnestics on others present during said testing. All cases requiring such amnestics are to be stored in a separate archive that is only accessible to the site director and those he deems appropriate.
Description: SCP-XXXX is an ornate thumbtack with a decorated cylindrical head and a pin of 1cm in length. The handle is carved from the bone of an as of yet unknown species. All attempts to identify the species have been unsuccessful. The age of the item is estimated to be well over 75,000 years old, though its exact age remains unknown, as it is far older than carbon dating is able to accurately measure. At the molecular level, the pin is constantly shifting metals, though it always retains its brass color. There has been no observed correlation between the effect of the item and the current state of its metal.
After being pinned by SCP-XXXX, documents will begin to change in some way. Approximately 94% of the time, this results in the document being translated into another language.
Frequently observed languages include:
- Polish
- Croatian
- Archaic Latin
- Russian
- Gaelic-Scottish
- Serbian
- Hebrew
- French
- German
- At least 4 other unidentified languages.
There is no discernible pattern as to which language SCP-XXXX decides to use, or when it alters something other than language, although some consistencies have been noted:
- When translated, typed text tends to stay in the same font, while handwritten text closely resembles the original author's handwriting.
- When multiple papers are pinned at once, alterations begin on the top page progress through to the underlying pages.
- The size and thickness of paper(s) used seem to have no bearing on the effect or its duration.
- Pinning papers with images rather than text results in the image breaking apart into its individual lines, which then shuffle around on the page in random patterns. Depending on the complexity of the image, the jumbled lines can sometimes arrange into a new image, though this often takes several hours.
Alterations other than language translation are a rare occurrence, but are extremely unpredictable and often violent. Observed alterations include:
- Change in color
- Seemingly random creases and folding
- Spontaneous combustion
- Changing to a liquid or gaseous state
- Extremely fast rate of biodegradation
- Growing or shrinking in size
- Secretion of liquid or gaseous chemicals
Recovery1: SCP-XXXX was recovered from [DATA EXPUNGED] Middle School in [DATA EXPUNGED]. Field agent responded to reports of multiple papers and essays coming from classroom 214 were written in vague, dead, or as of yet unidentified languages, yet still given grades as usual with no further comments or remarks from staff. An investigation by containment specialists found SCP-XXXX to be the common link between all affected papers. Item was then confiscated and brought back to facility.
Recovery2: SCP-XXXX was recovered from a rural Catholic School in [DATA EXPUNGED]. After reports of "satanic scripture" found posted in classroom 214, field agent had discovered multiple papers and essays from students in this classroom were written in archaic Latin, as well as a multitude of other dead or unknown languages that instructors believed to be "evil". An investigation by containment specialists found SCP-XXXX to be the common link between all affected papers. Item was then confiscated and brought back to facility.
Library Incident This incident was recorded on video, though the library's security systems are not equipped for audio recording. Dr. Warren and Jr. Researcher
Test 22-B: (page melts, drops appear to poison researcher, who has a seizure)
Test 98-A: (page reveals documents for cognitohazard/memetic SCP. Testing is ramped up to learn why it suddenly went from language translation to full on top secret documents)
Addendum: [a few more random incidents or observations, maybe? Some strange tests that aren't quite as dangerous as those above?]
