Blood Crystals

Item #: SCP-5347

Object Class: Keter

Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-5347 must be kept inside its original case of ancient SiO^4 (quartz). The room it is kept in must be bombarded by microwaves at all times. In the event of a power outage, the backup power for the room will last approximately 48 hours. After that time, seal the hermetic doors and evacuate the research stations and security rooms. If there is any breach in the sealing process, the detonation of the Blacksite is required immediately.
The backup generator is an MEP-501A military generator and requires diesel gasoline. The generator provides 2000 Watts of 28V DC power, enough to supply the microwave emitters with a 48-hour power supply. When this fails, any personnel inside the containment room will be evacuated, and if not capable of being evacuated, left behind. To access SCP-5347, there must be 3 level 4 members present while any technicians are in the room. They must each press a biometric scanner and one member must keep a finger on the scanner while data is being collected.
In the event of a breach and subsequent power failure, hermetic doors will be closed and the area will be locked off until a team of specialists arrive to force SCP-5347 back into its container. If the doors are breached, the immediate detonation of the blacksite is necessary. SCP-5347 is currently being held in the Toxic Biomaterials Lab in level H containment.
Infected organisms are highly aggressive and require immediate termination once they reach stage 3. Guards will be posted outside SCP-5347’s containment cell whenever there are technicians inside. Any infected (except test subjects) are to be immediately contained into the site’s incinerator. Subsequent termination will occur. In the event of a breach, rendezvous at the containment site, as any infected will try to liberate the SCP.

Description:
SCP-5347 resembles a glass necklace worn about the neck. However, the “glass” is a quartz container. The vial is 40 mm long x 14 mm wide, with a beryllium mesh between the quartz layers. The top is made from a wood-like substance. Upon contact with any living tissue, the wood becomes a liquid, allowing the contents to leak out. The contents that reside in the container are largely gas-based. In experiment L, SCP-5347 was allowed to leave the vial and reside inside the testing chamber for 24 hours. Reports showed that it condenses on the mirror, where the technicians were stationed. The test showed limited sentience, or rather, a drive to infect a host.
In a gaseous state, SCP-5347 is a colorless, odorless gas. A resemblance to Carbon dioxide may be an evolutionary trait or an engineered ability. With further study, a singular gas molecule looks along the line of a snowflake. Crystalline in appearance, and a .01 mm diameter. Further study showed that the singular crystal moved closer to the edges of the study container, further showing limited sentience from SCP-5347. When together, the contents of it become a more fluid gas, taking on less of crystalline quality. This is to facilitate pack movement and aid in an infection.

Infected subjects have 3 recorded stages of infection:

Stage 1: Infected will experience pain similar to that of frostbite, with skin or outer tissue splitting open and blood flowing and hardening into a crystal-like substance. The SCP will then work its way into the host and use it as a growing area for more crystals. After the initial damage, the host's nerves are dampened, and pain-reducing neurotransmitters are released. In this stage, the host is still in control of their functions.

Stage 2: Crystalline protrusions will push through the skin, and the host will begin having increased pain resistance and mood swings. In recordings of subjects that have had their crystals removed, there is no evidence of physical pain. Instead, the host will fight captivity and act as though it is being separated from a child. When plant organisms are removed from the crystals, they begin to wilt immediately. The crystals are harmless once removed from the host, but if a host can reobtain the crystal, they have been recorded stabbing themselves to regain it. It is noted that each subject has no affinity for a set crystal, but rather any of them. When removing a crystal, the host will become violent and attack the remover, often then consuming the remover. It is unknown why. In this stage, the host is still in control of their functions.

Stage 3: The subjects always have 2 distinct features in stage 3, long sharp spikes protruding from the palms, which they walk on. The other is a short stubby crystal covering the mouth and nose. At stage 3, hosts will become increasingly aggressive and will attack any organism near them. In this stage when they encounter an organism, they will slash at it with the spires, and once the organism is close to death, the infected will open up the crystal on the face, and begin to consume a part of the organism. After this, the organism begins at stage 2 of the infection. It is to be noted that plant life that has reached stage 3 will have crystals growing in the roots that have faced upwards where it can impale other organisms.

Infected subjects require an abundance of food and water, and will become hostile at any stage if they are kept from sustenance.

Audio log from test subject Delta

START LOG

Delta: Hello Doctor, how are we today?

Doctor [REDACTED]: We are good, everything has been running smoothly here. No accidents at all.

Delta: That is very good to hear! How is the wife?

Doctor [REDACTED]: She is very good thank you for asking. Now listen, we have something to ask of you.

Delta: Hmm?

Doctor [REDACTED]: We need a crystal.

Delta: Oh. I see.

Doctor [REDACTED]: I hope this can go painlessly.

Delta: Yes…. Of course.

Doctor [REDACTED]: [REDACTED] are you ok?

Delta: Yes. But you may not have them. I need them.

Doctor [REDACTED]: I had hoped this wouldn’t come to this.

*scuffle and restraints snapping*

Delta: NO YOU CAN’T DO THIS! I NEED THEM I NEED THEM I NEED THEM!

Doctor [REDACTED]: I'm sorry [REDACTED], I am.

Delta: I’LL KILL YOU! WE ARE NOT GETTING SEPARATE! I LOVE THEM THEY ARE MINE!

*Buzzsaw scraping* *Sobbing*

*Restraints snapping*

PA: BREACH! INFECTEE DELTA IS A BREACH!

*Screaming* *Buzzsaw cutting flesh*

Delta: I told you, Jim, we are not getting separated.

*Gunshot*

Addendum 2
Guard uniform for SCP-5347
All guards will be issued an MP5SD, created by the Heckler and Koch company. Each gun has a 30 round 9mm magazine, with a fire rate of 900 RPM. Firearms are only to be used to subdue stage 2 Infected, and terminate stage 3 infected. As a sidearm, they are equipped with a 1911 handgun, with a 7 round .45 ACP magazine. Kevlar armor is standard equipment for all guards in the SCP-5347 containment squad. Since Stage 3 infected can seriously injure staff members, all staff is equipped with a baton. Any staff that is involved with SCP-5347 are given a sidearm as well for personal security.
