A burning, charred forest found in SCP-XXXX

Special Containment Procedures:
Instances of SCP-XXXX-2 are to be kept in solitary confinement cells, with walls made of concrete at least 3 meters thick. Cells must be sufficiently separated, so as to not allow instances of SCP-XXXX-2 to ever come within 2 meters of each other. In the event that 2 instances of SCP-XXXX-2 do come into contact with each other, there must be an immediate lockdown of all facilities in the east wing of Area 92, and all personnel must immediately evacuate. Destruction attempts should immediately commence on the resulting entity.

No personnel are to enter SCP-XXXX without clearance from the on-site Level 4 staff member. No personnel are to enter SCP-XXXX alone. Whenever an entrance has been approved, the entering personnel shall be placed in cells meeting the requirements for containing instances of SCP-XXXX-2, in case of a takeover event.

Under no circumstances should any attempts be made to terminate instances of SCP-XXXX-2 (See file SCP-XXXX-E). Should such attempts be made, the personnel responsible will immediately be terminated.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a dimension that can be accessed through dreams. In order to access SCP-XXXX, one must obtain the required chant from the on-site Level 4 staff, as access to the chant has been restricted to personnel with Level 4 clearance or higher. After a successful chant, the chanter will "enter" SCP-XXXX upon falling asleep, and be in a lucid, dream-like state.

The landscapes within SCP-XXXX follow no coherent pattern, and form distinctive biomes that clash into each other at large fault-lines. The sky is deep scarlet, and shimmers as though it is on fire. SCP-XXXX contains vast marble pillars that stretch into the sky that continue to disappear over the horizon, regardless of how close one approaches to them. The air occasionally fills with an orange haze, which can greatly limit one's sight.

SCP-XXXX-A: Discovery

Through research of SCP-████████, research personnel came across the chant ████████████, which was described as "allowing the chosen to enter the higher realm" once deciphered. 5 D-Class personnel and 1 volunteer researcher were all put in an isolated room and instructed to perform the chant. No significant event occurred. After 3 hours of no noteworthy event happening, the personnel were allowed to return to their quarters. The next morning, all 6 personnel awoke in states of distress, and were gathered together for questioning.

The testimonies described a charred landscape with strange, blood red vegetation, a sky that appeared to be on fire, and bizarre pillars that were always too far away to reach. Each entrant described different local environments:

D-9203: A thick forest, with trees appearing burned to an ashy crisp. Incredibly sticky red sap oozed from pores and holes in the bark. A bright blue, glowing fungus was growing on the roots of many of the trees. Of note: The fungus did not seem to resist any force applied to it, and upon the slightest touch would burst in a cloud of spores.

D-9207: A small island in the middle of a dark red lake. The liquid was very reflective, and nothing could be seen below the surface. Of note: Upon touching the liquid, D-9207 found it to be very thick and elastic, and was able to walk on its surface to the other side of the lake.

D-9218: Vast plains stretching as far as the eye could see. The only visible landmarks were the pillars in the distance, over the horizon. The grass and weeds on the ground were all very vibrant shades of red. Of note: D-9218 stated that the longer he spent walking through the grass, the more itchy his feet became.

D-9225: The peak of an incredibly tall, black charred mountain. Orange mist prevented D-9225 from seeing the bottom of the mountain. Despite spending the duration of the dream attempting to climb down the mountain, the orange mist never cleared. It was never evident how close D-9225 was to the bottom of the mountain. Of note: D-9225 states that different parts of the mountain felt different, even though they appeared identical. Some felt soft, like logs of a fire that had long been out, others felt hard and sharp like shards of obsidian, and still others felt slick, even slightly sticky, as if a liquid was exuding from the surface. However, upon investigation, no liquid was found.

D-9230: The shores of a river flowing incredibly swiftly. The liquid was visually the same as described by D-9207- very reflective and opaque. The rapids made the liquid crash in foamy white bursts. Along the side of the river, various vibrant red vegetation grew, including the same blue, glowing fungus described by D-9203. However, these bulbs were reported to be much larger. Of note: D-9230 followed the flow of the river and was able to reach what appeared to be an ocean of the dark red liquid. The bottoms of the pillars were still not visible over the ocean.

Dr. Hughes: Small patches of land floating over a dark black abyss. The patches of land were floating at different elevations, and Dr. Hughes was able to observe strange crystal structures underneath each of the islands. The crystals were described as having a strange blue glow to them. Of note: Dr. Hughes expressed that he has a sharp fear of heights, but felt no fear while looking over the edge of the floating land into the abyss thousands of meters below. However, upon waking up, he felt as if all the fear he would have felt hit him at once, and he nearly entered a state of shock.

All entrants also noted that they were wearing the attire they had worn during the time of the chant while in SCP-XXXX. Dr. Hughes was wearing his lab coat and glasses, even though he had removed them to rest for the night.

SCP-XXXX-B: Cartography

After this "Dreamscape" realm was discovered, a large investigation was planned. Several dozen D-Class personnel and a team of researchers performed the chant, and then entered SCP-XXXX. All awoke the next day in varying states of distress, and described the landscapes that they observed. Some seemed to have recurring details that were found in other descriptions, such as D-9258 seeing a charred mountain so tall that he was unable to see the peak, as it was obscured by an orange mist, and even after spending the entire night climbing, he could still not see the peak.

From these descriptions, and through several more days of investigation, the researchers were eventually able to put together what they thought to be an accurate map of SCP-XXXX. However, there was one area of the map missing- the direct center. SCP-XXXX seemed to be an incredibly large island surrounded by a vast ocean, and though the ocean consisted of the same walkable, dark red liquid seen in many other places in SCP-XXXX, attempting to walk across had yielded no new observations.

During these research and cartography missions, several research staff were encouraged to discover as much as they could about the various objects, entities, and substances present throughout SCP-XXXX. During these investigations, Dr. Worsley discovered that one could perform the entrance chant while inside SCP-XXXX and, much like how objects in the possession of those who perform the chant in our world transfer over to SCP-XXXX, objects are able to transfer back to our world from SCP-XXXX.

This discovery attracted the interest of the O5 council, and orders were given to bring back all kinds of materials for analysis. Of note: The viscous dark red liquid was discovered to contain DNA, but the species analysis did not match any known species in the Foundation’s catalogue. The glowing blue crystals seemed to have negative mass, a property assumed to be impossible to obtain, which is what allowed them to make objects float against gravity. Upon discovering the properties of the glowing blue crystals, the Foundation began large scale mining operations in SCP-XXXX, ordering entrants to bring back as much crystal as possible without floating away.

Of note: As of all of these investigations, it seemed that it was impossible to incur injury while in SCP-XXXX. No fall from any height caused any broken bones, and no object, no matter how sharp, was able to scrape the skin.

SCP-XXXX-C: Contact

Once it was revealed that the center of the map was still unexplored after many different investigation sessions, researchers instructed the entrants to try and discover what was at the center of the island. Copies of the map were given to each entrant before the chant took place, as well as exploration gear that included ice picks, grappling hooks, and flashlights, as the different terrains throughout SCP-XXXX have proven to be sometimes extremely challenging to traverse.

Upon entering, all entrants had the equipment that was on their person at the time of the chant, and were able to read the map. Every entrant looked for surroundings that could be recognized on the map, and made their way to where they thought the center would be. Many entrants, for the first time in any investigation, actually saw and were able to interact with other entrants in SCP-XXXX. It is unknown how interactions did not occur earlier, considering the number of entrants that entered SCP-XXXX every night.

Approximately 12 of the 46 entrants were able to meet at the edge of the Center- which appeared to be surrounded by a large mountain range that blocked the entire uncharted section of the map. The other 34 luckily entered far enough away that they were not able to reach the Center before waking up. Among the 12 were Dr. Hughes, D-9207, and D-9213, the only survivors of the 12, from whose testimonies this description has been gathered.

Once the mountains are crossed, a thick orange mist materializes and blocks the view of all the terrain that was outside of the Center Ridge. A vast valley is behind the Center Ridge, and a giant, black pillar rose from the ground to the sky in the middle of it, surrounded by a pool of the dark red liquid. Upon approach, the pillar is shown to not be a single bar reaching to the sky, but instead what appears to be a giant gateway. It is unknown where this gateway leads as all of the testimonies from the 3 survivors give conflicting answers as to what they saw on the other side of the gate.

D-9213 was the first to notice the black creatures, now referred to as SCP-XXXX-1, emerging from the surface of the pillars of the gate, and shouted to get the rest of the 12's attention. Upon emerging, the instances of SCP-XXXX-1 rushed at the nearest entrant, thrusting themselves into any orifice they could find, after which the entrant's eyes and mouth emitted a blinding blue glow, and after a few seconds of screaming in agony, they exploded in a puff of blue spores. D-9213, D-9207, and Dr. Hughes were all close to the pool of liquid that surrounded the land around the gate, and ran across it in an attempt to flee. The instances of SCP-XXXX-1 tried to pursue, but when they stepped on the liquid they immediately sank below the surface. Once all but the three who escaped had exploded, all of the entrants immediately woke up.

The entrants who were possessed by instances of SCP-XXXX-1 awoke in extremely high levels of distress, and began screaming in agony and pain. Their eyes and mouth began glowing bright blue, and after a few seconds passed, the screaming stopped. It is at this point that the entrants become instances of SCP-XXXX-2.

SCP-XXXX-D: Infiltration

Instances of SCP-XXXX-2 are humanoid in form, and appear to have their skin charred black, with bright red liquid occasionally oozing from various pores on their body. Their eyes glow bright blue, and there is a fungus that has a similar glow that grows on various parts of their body, along with crystals of the same color. If they are in solitude, they walk around aimlessly, pacing around whatever space they are contained in. In this state, they do not display any signs of intelligence. However, if they detect that there is either a human or another instance of SCP-XXXX-2 near them, within a range of about 2 meters, they will furiously attempt to try and reach that entity. They are able to bend steel bars and dig through any material attempted to use to stop them while in this enraged state. The only way to prevent them from reaching their target entity is to bring that entity far enough away so that they can no longer detect them. This "undetection range" seems to vary between different instances of SCP-XXXX-2, and can be anywhere from the initial 2 meter range, to seemingly endless range. Of note: while in this enraged state, instances of SCP-XXXX-2 do not seem to retarget to other entities, even if those entities come closer than the original target entity.

If a human is caught by an SCP-XXXX-2 instance, the instance injects blue spores into their eyes and mouth, after which both the instance and the target enter a dormant state. This dormant state lasts until the next dawn, upon which both entities awaken as instances of SCP-XXXX-2.

If an instance of SCP-XXXX-2 is ever terminated via a ████ ██ ███ ████, the instance will immediately explode, expelling large amounts of glowing blue liquid that coats the surrounding surfaces and quickly crystallizes. The resulting blue crystals retain the negative mass property of crystals obtained from SCP-XXXX, and have the tendency to make entire sections of buildings break off and float into space. Any human that comes into contact with the material in its liquid state will become a dormant instance of SCP-XXXX-2, where they will awaken as an active instance come the next dawn.

SCP-XXXX-E: Destruction

Upon coming into contact with another instance of SCP-XXXX-2, the two instances begin to fuse. They then grow into an incredibly large black pillar, which is able to break through any material above it as it stretches up to the sky. It reaches a height farther than is perceivable by the naked eye, and then begins to travel back down in an arc formation. It is assumed that, should this process be allowed to finish, it would create a gate similar to the one found in the Center of SCP-XXXX, although it is unknown what, if anything, would emerge from it, given the conflicting reports of what was seen through the gate by the three survivors.

Addendum

Following the breach caused by 9 instances of SCP-XXXX-2 awakening in Area 92, the on-site warhead was nearly set off to prevent the gate from forming. However, a D-Class personnel was caught in some shrapnel that was pulled up with the gate as it extended into the sky. This D-Class personnel happened to be the target of one of the other SCP-XXXX-2 instances that had just awakened, and it tore through most of the pillar in its attempt to reach him as he soared into the sky. The destruction caused by the instance was enough to make the gate collapse, and all of the other 6 SCP-XXXX-2 instances had targeted humans, resulting in their entering a dormant state. The Foundation was then able to confine each dormant instance in separate cells before they awoke.
