Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be

Description: SCP-XXXX is a colony of hyper mobile sea sponge1 found exclusively off the coast of the remote Italian seaside village of [DATA EXPUNGED], located in the █████████ Sea. Size and shape varies slightly from "members" of the colony; however a majority of the population appear to be vaguely spherical in shape, often reaching 1.6 meters in diameter once reaching an observed period of maturation.

Unlike its fellow Dictyoceratida, SCP-XXXX possesses a backwards flowing, articulated osculum2— effectively functioning as a buccal cavity3 (which will accordingly be referred to as such) and appendages used to carry itself about the sea floor, although it has been documented that larger instances of SCP-XXXX lose their ability to "walk" almost entirely. These extremities work in manner similar to Scotoplanes4: utilizing their buccal cavity to pump water into hollow chambers of softer, less porous tissue in order to inflate and deflate the limbs. A confirmed maximum speed of 8.34 km/h has been observed in a [REDACTED] (See Addendum-XXXX-1).

Much like other species in its phylum, SCP-XXXX still somewhat relies on water flow to gather nutrients, however SCP-XXXX distinguishes itself from other Periferae by taking water through its buccal cavity and into modified choanocytes5 located within the spongocoel6. SCP-XXXX does not secrete enzymes while [REDACTED]. All specimens of SCP-XXXX appear to be opportunistic eaters, seldom exerting energy to pursue greater prey. However, a video log capturing anomalous, uncommon behavior within SCP-XXXX has been documented, detailing [REDACTED].

SCP-XXXX does not appear sapient, although it is apparent that SCP-XXXX possesses a higher cognitive capacity to that of normal Porifera, as it has been recorded that it responds to the following stimuli:

  • Changes in pressure and movement.
  • Presence of light or lack thereof.
  • Stimulation of tissues, i.e. "pain."
