Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX does not pose risk until interacted with, and as such these containment procedures are in place mainly to prevent contact with the item. SCP-XXXX must be held in a cell no less than 3 x 3 x 3 meters in dimensions and is to be kept under constant surveillance to ensure it remains solitary. No human may be allowed to come into contact with SCP-XXXX except for research purposes and with clearance of one Level 3 personnel. Should SCP-XXXX be interacted with in a breach of protocol, special steps must be taken to ensure that no other individuals approach the affected person. Personnel are authorized to terminate the victim by gunshot only if necessary due to the mental health risks posed by SCP-XXXX-1.
Description: SCP-XXXX consists of a substance similar in appearance to mist that is held within a stone archway, these items being referred to as SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2, respectively. SCP-XXXX-1, physically similar to mist or fog, is a gray, gaseous substance that is not totally opaque. Witnesses describe what is beyond the mist as some kind of void and the real contents are, presumably, only visible after being affected by SCP-XXXX-1. When close to SCP-XXXX-1, whisperings in an unknown language are reported to have emanated from within. When touched, SCP-XXXX-1 reacts by encompassing the victim in mist and giving the victim some knowledge of a supposed afterlife (see Addendum XXXX-1). At this stage, the victim must be removed from proximity of the mist by an inanimate object, such as a rope or a robot. Failure to do so will cause the mist around the victim to become opaque and then disappear, leaving no trace of the victim. It is assumed that victims die and proceed into the afterlife described by the SCP-XXXX-1. If another individual touches the victim during this process, they will be subject to the same effects.
SCP-XXXX-2 is a somewhat large stone archway, measuring 2.5 meters tall and about 1 meter wide. SCP-XXXX-1 resides within the arch until activated. The stone is plain and smooth, and by looking through the arch one sees SCP-XXXX-1 and the void behind it. However, upon looking through from the reverse side, one sees only the same stone that the archway is made of. Under current knowledge, SCP-XXXX-2 does nothing except hold SCP-XXXX-1.
Discovery: SCP-XXXX was initially discovered by a group of excavators in the Sahara Desert. The team were hired by The █████████████ after the circulation of rumors stating that there were artifacts from the Antediluvian era buried beneath the sands. The team uncovered a series of large rectangular rooms and reported their findings to The █████████████ who, upon receiving the message, sent personnel to collect any items within. They fled when Foundation staff arrived, leaving behind only SCP-XXXX in the room furthest away from the opening of the structure. It is unknown how many items were in the structure, but Foundation researchers count at least forty-one (41) rooms, which presumably corresponds to forty-one (41) artifacts that were taken by The █████████████. Markings on the walls of the structure in an unknown language have yet to be decoded. It is possible that The █████████████ may be able to read said language using a decryption chart that was stolen from Foundation field personnel on September 8, ████ before it could be documented.
Addendum XXXX-1:
Interviewed: Agent ███████
Interviewer: Doctor ██████
Foreword: On October 9, ████, Agent ███████ engaged with SCP-XXXX, was engulfed in mist, and was removed from the premises by a robot.
<Begin Log>
Doctor: I understand you interacted with SCP-XXXX ten days ago. I would like you to describe to me what happened when the mist engulfed you. Could you understand the "voices" coming out of the void?
Agent: No, the voices stopped as soon as I touched the stone. Everything was completely silent, even my own breathing. I must assume that the fog temporarily disabled my hearing. However, I could still feel the voices… I couldn't see either, but I knew they were there. And I knew they had form now, that if I were able to see, I could see them.
Doctor: Interesting. Can you describe for me what happened after you touched the archway?
Agent: All my senses were lost… I felt like I was floating in the void behind the mist. The voices… they showed me in my mind a paradise, like Heaven. I knew, somehow, that it was real, and that it was waiting for me. An afterlife that nullified the inconveniences of a real world.
Doctor: This… paradise. What was it like?
Agent: It was… like our world, but peaceful. The people there have achieved utopia; everyone is happy there. It's beautiful, too; the skies are a pure shade of blue, the landscape is lush and green. It's like our planet before we polluted it, but they have knowledge and technology as well.
Doctor: It certainly sounds like Heaven. Why are you still here, then?
Agent: I have a duty to the Foundation, to the population. There was no way I could abandon everyone for a selfish reason. When I thought about going there, I felt unfulfilled, like it wouldn't be paradise unless I had accomplished something in my life first, and died in a normal way. Then… I woke up.
Doctor: I see. Thank you for your time. I look forward to working with you.
Agent: And you. Thanks.
<End Log>
Closing Statement: Agent showed no signs of mental trauma after incident and seemed considerably more productive.
Addendum XXXX-2:
Test A - 10/17/██
Subject: D-4882
Procedure: Subject told to touch SCP-XXXX-2.
Results: Normal reaction from SCP-XXXX-1 ensued, subject disappeared. Recorded voice tone of subject became more prevalent in the "voices" from the void.
Test B - 10/24/██
Subject: D-4891
Procedure: Subject told to run through SCP-XXXX-1.
Results: Subject frozen in running position upon reaching SCP-XXXX-1. Normal reaction from SCP-XXXX-1 ensued.
