Item #: SCP-4014
Object Class: Keter
Special Containment Procedures:
SCP-4014 is unmovable, and thus Area-1616 has been specially constructed
to around it and the related and similarly unmovable SCP-4014-1 contained
within it.
Preventing access to SCP-4014-1, contained within SCP-4014, is the overriding
goal of Area-1616. O5 has given summary authorization to all units posted
there to perform summary termination of any person, including Foundation
personnel, approaching SCP-4014 under the assumption that once inside
SCP-4014 they will have access to SCP-4014-1.
To this end, a device (known as the "hopper") has been constructed at the
front door of SCP-4014-1. The hopper consists of a robot arm capable of
opening the front door of SCP-4014 and a collection of nuclear devices
with an average yield of forty (40) megatons. The hopper assembly is
capable of opening the front door of SCP-4014, inserting a nuclear device,
and closing the door.
The anomalous properties of SCP-4014, combined with the fortuitous
coincidence that its door swings inward, are believed to be capable of
containing the subsequent nuclear blast, while ensuring that any intruder
inside the anomaly is terminated.
The hopper mechanism itself is powered by three redundant radioisotope
thermal generators, any one of which is capable of powering the hopper for
a minimum of thirty (30) years without refueling, though on-site staff is
required to implant fresh fuel on a yearly basis with a three-year rotating
schedule for generator selection.
The hopper and SCP-4014 have been encased in a hemisphere of solid concrete
110 meters (approximately 360 feet) in diameter. Voids have been carved
out of the hemisphere to allow for actuation of the hopper's arm assembly.
This hemisphere has itself been been buried under 4 meters (approximately
13 feet) of sand taken from the surrounding desert. A tunnel approximately
15 centimeters (approximately 6 inches) in diameter exists to deliver fresh
fuel to the hopper and to perform maintenance using teleoperated robots.
Vibration detectors have been placed across the hemisphere under the topsoil
in a grid pattern with a spacing of one meter. Any vibration detected
within the hemisphere that cannot be immediately correlated with known
geological, hydrological, or maintenance processes will cause immediate
activation of the hopper and deployment of a nuclear device.
The Foundation has acquired all of the land in a 20 kilometer (12.5 mile)
radius centered on SCP-4014. Regular plainclothes patrols from MTF D-17
("The Ranch Hands") are to patrol the area, but any incursion by a patrol
within one (1) kilometer of SCP-4014 is to be met with summary termination.
Under General Order Aleph-Null, any unauthorized person within ten (10)
kilometers of SCP-4014 is to be summarily terminated.
Description:
SCP-4014 is an abandoned gas station located 203.34 kilometers northwest
of [REDACTED], Arizona, United States. The station is in an unpopulated
and undeveloped area of the desert, and no paved roads are present within
twenty-five (25) kilometers of SCP-4014.
All entrances to the station except the front door are boarded over.
The front door is a normal commercial glass door that can be pushed open
from the outside and automatically closes again. Upon opening a distinct
*ding* sound is heard.
The station is empty save for a single cashier's counter and a single
shelf mounted to the wall behind it approximately 1.7 meters (5.5 feet)
off the floor.
There are no records of the station's construction or operation with
any of the relevant regulatory bodies at the county, state, tribal, or
federal level. Additionally, the station does not appear on any maps
checked by the Geographical Survey Department, nor does it appear in any
aerial or satellite imagery.
Visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet photographs taken from the outside
of the station, seemingly regardless of distance or orientation, display
only the scene behind the station.
However, the station is plainly visible to any sentient being with senses
in the human visible spectrum.
SCP-4014 was discovered during a routine overflight by Aerial Task Force
Epsilon-22 ("Desert Vultures"). When it was realized that the station
did not appear on any maps, MTF Gamma-107 was dispatched to investigate.
MTF G-107 determined that the station was anomalous when attempting
to photograph it (see above), and notified Sector leadership and began
creating a secure perimeter.
Further investigation by a Mobile Investigation Unit determined that the
gas station is indestructible by any known means.
Ballistic and explosive tests revealed that no damage was done to the
station and all explosive devices detonated within the station had their
effects completely contained within the station. This has been tested
with conventional explosives and Site Director [REDACTED] authorized later
tests with low-yield nuclear devices (to quote: "it's in the middle of
the desert and we haven't had a proper nuclear test in *ages*").
SCP-4014 was initially classed as "Safe" as the station itself has
no dangerous anomalous properties. It was not until the discovery of
SCP-4014-1 that the station was reclassified as Keter.
When a human stands behind the cashier's counter, jumps, touches the
ceiling at the peak of the jump, and the slaps the shelf with the same
hand before landing, SCP-4014-1 appears.
(This sequence of steps was discovered serendipitously by Commander
[REDACTED] while escorting Junior Researcher [REDACTED] on a routine
cataloging mission. Commander [REDACTED] claimed that he was "bored"
and was simply "horsing around".)
SCP-4014-1 appears as a series of alphanumeric symbols floating above
the cashier's station. It is visible only to the entity that performed
the jump above, and no other entity can trigger the appearance of these
symbols until the current viewer has left the gas station.
The symbols consist of twenty-two (22) lines of text in the language most
understandable to the viewer.
The top two lines in English read:
DEBUG MENU
RUN TIME: *n*
where *n* is a sixty-one (61) digit number in conventional decimal notation.
The rightmost forty-three (43) places of the number are blurred and appear
to be incrementing faster than can be detected by the human eye.
The following nineteen (19) lines read "param *n*" (where *n* is a number
between one and nineteen) followed by a number in conventional decimal
notation.
The final line contains a question:
QUIT (Y/N)?
Commander [REDACTED] immediately contacted Sector Command who dispatched
a scientific team for further research.
Dr. [REDACTED], a cosmologist who is normally employed in the Alternate
Reality Investigation Division noted that the numeric values on the nineteen
"param" lines correspond to the nineteen known fundamental dimensionless
constants in the Standard Model of Particle Physics.
The numeric value in the "RUN TIME" line is unknown, but Dr. [REDACTED]
noted that the number is within three orders of magnitude of the estimated
age of the visible universe in units of Planck time.
There is no known mechanism to answer the question asked on the bottom line
of SCP-4014-1. Research into any such mechanisms is strictly prohibited.
