Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special containment procedures: SCP-XXXX-2 is to be contained within a standard storage locker. SCP-XXXX-1 to be contained within a chamber that is lined with a material that has a very dense molecular structure, with no gaps between atoms exceeding 250 nanometers. This chamber is to be suspended 2 meters from all surfaces inside another chamber by cables that allow the inner chamber to swing about freely. The outer chamber should have multiple layers of impact-dampening materials, and monitored at all times. Should something appear to be "leaking" from the inner chamber, SCP-XXXX-1 and SCP-XXXX-2 are to be assumed to have breached containment. SCP-XXXX-1 is to remain in its "off" state unless testing is being conducted. No personnel are permitted access to either locker without explicit written approval from the Site-81 Director. Lethal force is authorized to prevent access to SCP-XXXX-1 and -2. Any personnel who attempt to retrieve either SCP-XXXX-1 or -2 without permission and survive are to immediately cease employment with the Foundation. SCP-XXXX-3 has been destroyed, and is considered neutralized.
Description: SCP-XXXX refers to the anomalous contents of the lab owned by Professor Adrian ███████ at █████████ University in █████, Ohio, who has been designated POI-XXXX. SCP-XXXX-1 is a small cube that measures 15.2 centimeters on each side, and it is constructed of anomalously pure iron. Its vertices have been somewhat rounded, presumably by repeated collisions.
When the cube is resting completely flat on the ground and not moving, a holographic display appears 1 centimeter above the upwards-facing side. The display shows a simple interface where the user can see multiple physics principles/laws/concepts in a list.1 Users can navigate this interface using SCP-XXXX-2. When one is selected, SCP-XXXX-1 will2 cease to be affected by the selected principal/law/concept. It is currently unknown how SCP-XXXX-1 accomplishes this. When no options are selected, SCP-XXXX-1 is said to be in its “off” state.
The list includes such options as Inertia, Friction, Gravity, and ████████████████. A few of the options have an additional interface the user can navigate, allowing the user to change the level to which the option is enacted.3 The “Bouncing” option allows the user to change how bouncy the cube is by inputting a ratio of force inputted to force outputted. Similarly, the “Magnetism” option allows the user to input a number that will then dictate the amount of magnetic force the object exerts on items around it.
SCP-XXXX-2 is a heavily modified TV remote that can navigate the interface on SCP-XXXX-1. The modifications allow SCP-XXXX-2 to transmit signals to SCP-XXXX-1 no matter the how far or by what the two objects are separated. Most of the buttons on SCP-XXXX-2 have a similar function to those of a normal TV remote: the directional arrow buttons on the remote are used to navigate the menu, and the 'Select' button selects the current option and also finalizes the inputted number for an intensity menu. It should be noted that the preceding buttons only function when SCP-XXXX-1's menu is showing. The 'Stop,' 'Pause,' and 'Play' buttons, however, function at all times.
While SCP-XXXX-1 is in its "off" state, Stop, Play, and Pause will not do anything. Once an option is selected, however, they will perform the following functions:
- The “Stop” button, when pressed, will immediately deselect all options, returning SCP-XXXX-1 to its off state.
- The “Pause” button, when pressed, will freeze SCP-XXXX-1 where it is, even in midair. This is achieved by completely halting the movement of the atoms making up SCP-XXXX-1, meaning that the object becomes extremely cold. While “paused,” SCP-XXXX-1 will not move at all: even point-blank impacts from explosives have been unable to move SCP-XXXX-1 while it is “paused”.
- When “Play” is pressed, the cube will return to the state it was in before it was paused, completely disregarding anything done to it while it was paused. It will retain ALL of its pre-pause states, including such things as temperature, velocity, and level of radiation.
SCP-XXXX-3 refers to a small room that was utilized by Professor Adrian before its destruction. It was a cube that measured 2.5 meters per side. On each wall, at a height of 2 meters, were thin windows for viewing what was inside. The side of the cube that faces the door to the lab has a small, lockable door, through which SCP-XXXX-1 was placed in and taken out of SCP-XXXX-3. Security footage of the lab, along with multiple text and video files found on Professor Adrian’s computer, revealed that SCP-XXXX-3 was used as a testing chamber for SCP-XXXX-1. SCP-XXXX-3 was anomalous in that though the material it was made out of would normally allow SCP-XXXX-1 to "leak" through when “████████████████” was selected, multiple tests were performed by Adrian where that failed to occur. Additionally, when “Inertia” was selected, SCP-XXXX-3 did not move nor show any signs of damage, even when it was impacted by forces estimated to exceed 11 million Newtons. The effects of SCP-XXXX-3 are thought to be activated by a small button near the door on SCP-XXXX-3, as Adrian can be seen pressing it before and after each recorded test. It seems that when SCP-XXXX-3 is not “on,” none of these effects apply, which presumably explains why SCP-XXXX-3 was destroyed during the recovery of SCP-XXXX-1 and -2.
Addendum XXXX.1: On 16/9/████, a student at █████████ University called the local police station with complaints that they couldn’t sleep due to repeated thumping that had continued over the course of 8 nights, getting louder each night. the student reported the noise to be coming from the floor where Professor ███████’s office was situated. When an officer arrived to investigate, the professor, who had been testing with SCP-XXXX-1, panicked and took SCP-XXXX-1 out of SCP-XXXX-3. He then attempted to knock out the policewoman by hitting her in the head with SCP-XXXX-1. He succeeded, but not before she radioed for backup. When a larger force arrived, Adrian selected “Inertia” and, through as-of-yet undiscovered means, used SCP-XXXX-2 to direct the motion and speed of SCP-XXXX-1. He killed 3 officers, gave 4 major concussions, and inflicted a high amount of damage to his office and the surrounding rooms, along with completely destroying SCP-XXXX-3. Subsequently, a Foundation agent embedded in the local police station alerted MTF Phi-8 “Knowledge is Power." When they arrived, POI-XXXX levitated
Addendum XXXX.2: Interview Log 27/9/████
Interviewed: Professor Adrian ███████
Interviewer: Dr. O'Brien
Foreword: This interview was conducted under the pretense of a police investigation. Professor Adrian ███████ has not been informed of the Foundation's existence at the time of this interview. The following is an audio recording of the interview.
Dr. O'Brien: Please state your name and occupation for the record.
Professor Adrian: My name is Adrian ███████, and I am a professor of Advanced Physics at █████████ University.
Dr. O'Brien: So, Professor, how did the objects come into your possession?
Professor Adrian: I will not answer any further questions without contacting a lawyer.
Dr. O'Brien: There is no need to make this difficult. You aren't necessarily in trouble. So, how did you acquire the objects?
Professor Adrian: Fine. I made the cube, remote, and testing chamber myself.
Dr. O'Brien: Well, why?
Professor Adrian: I'm a professor of the sciences. I was curious as to what would happen if an object could stop obeying the fundamental principals of our universe. It's as simple as that. May I leave?
Dr. O'Brien: How did you acquire the knowledge to make such an object?
Professor Adrian: I am very experienced with deep dives into the internet because of all of my research papers. I looked in the right places.
Dr. O'Brien: Exactly what places?
Professor Adrian: Why do you need to know? I still don't like that I haven't been allowed to contact a legal professional. What do you want from me?
Dr. O'Brien: Answer the question, professor.
Professor Adrian: My lawyer will know about this unlawful treatment.
Dr. O'Brien: (Threateningly) Do not make this more difficult than this needs to be.
Professor Adrian: I don't like your tone.
A soft click is heard, later confirmed by Dr. O'Brien to be him flicking the safety of his sidearm offProfessor Adrian: I c-contacted some, some, uh less-than-savory, uh, individuals who, uh, they uh, agreed to h-help me out if I, I p-paid them.
Dr. O'Brien: That wasn't so hard, was it? Thank you for your time. You are free to go.
