Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained in an at least 10x10x10m waterproof room, with at least 40% of the ceiling being constructed of translucent materials to allow for natural daylight to enter. The room must include an 8.0m2 water basin 2.0m deep. The rest of the room's floor is to be slightly sloped downwards towards the body of water (no more than 10°). No breakable or dangerous objects are to be be placed closer than 1.5m to SCP-XXXX's containment area. Any instances of SCP-XXXX-1 are to be collected from the containment area and either disposed of via incineration, or contained in a container with no access to daylight for later testing. This is to be performed by two D-Class personnel once daily in the time between sunset and sunrise. Said personnel are also to supply SCP-XXXX with 50kg of grass during each of these visits. Under no circumstances are they to approach SCP-XXXX, or perform any act to draw SCP-XXXX's attention to them, always maintaining a safety distance of at least 2.0m while SCP-XXXX is awake.
In case of a containment breach attempt during daytime, the translucent ceiling elements are immediately to be covered with a layer of opaque material to prevent daylight from entering.

Description: SCP-XXXX is physically indiscernable from an adult male great northern hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius amphibius), with a total weight of currently 1,470kg. While its anomalous effect is inactive, it exhibits behaviour identical to that of common individuals of that species.

When exposed to natural daylight, SCP-XXXX will first seek out a body of water large enough to be fully submerged in. Its anomalous effect will then activate, manipulating gravity in a radius of ca. 1.0m, levitating SPC-XXXX and up to 8m3 of water into the air. While suspended this way, SCP-XXXX may eventually begin to move as if it was swimming, causing it and the water suspended along with it to travel at a speed of up to 8km/h. This movement may include changes in altitude. As SCP-XXXX's relative position to the water it is immersed in remains unchanged during this procedure, the swimming movement is not necessarily the primary means by which the locomotion is accomplished, and may instead be a habit adopted from frequent swimming in normal water. This is, however, unconfirmed.
While immersed in water affected by its anomalous effect, SCP-XXXX does not seem to require to surface for breathing. In any other body of water, however, it requires to do so every 3-5 minutes, just like an ordinary hippopotamus. Once contact to natural daylight is no longer maintained, SCP-XXXX will begin to slowly sink downwards, deactivating its anomalous effect upon touching the ground.

The feces depositioned by SCP-XXXX is designated SCP-XXXX-1. Similar to SCP-XXXX's anomalous effect, SCP-XXXX-1 can cause minor disturbances in gravity. These disturbances grow in severity, radius and duration as the amount of SCP-XXXX-1 is increased.
So far no patterns as to when SCP-XXXX-1's anomalous effect activates could be determined, except that it can apparently do so only while exposed to natural daylight.

Addendum 1: Initially, the safest way to contain SCP-XXXX was considered to be keeping it separated from natural daylight. However, under such conditions, SCP-XXXX quickly developed signs of sickness and distress, which resulted in the current Special Containment Procedures being implemented to avoid SCP-XXXX's expiration. Although SCP-XXXX also appears to be unable to activate its effect without contact to a sufficient water body, it will develop similar symptoms if denied access to such for longer than 72 hours.

Addendum 2: SCP-XXXX was initially discovered in 20██, when several individuals working on a farm in ██████████, Mozambique reported seeing a hippopotamus flying over the area. The foundation was informed, and SCP-XXXX was tracked by a team of containment specialists. As it was only about 2 hours before sunset when the team arrived on the site of the event, they soon witnessed SCP-XXXX's inability to use its effect in the absence of daylight and were subsequently able to contain the entity. Civilian witnesses were administered amnestics. It is currently unclear whether further instances of SCP-XXXX exist.
