Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be kept in a standard non-anomalous containment closet at Site-█ █.

Following incident XXXX-01, the following changes are to be made:

  • The item is to have a piece of masking tape bearing the word “Newspapers” affixed to the side when not used for testing.
  • Two cardboard boxes of the same dimensions as SCP-XXXX are to be filled with newspapers and placed in the same closet as SCP-XXXX. They are also to be marked with masking tape bearing the word “Newspapers”.
  • Should any changes occur to SCP-XXXX which would allow SCP-XXXX to be easily distinguished from both of the boxes, similar changes should be performed on one or both of the boxes.
  • SCP-XXXX and both cardboard boxes are to be sealed with packing tape. Any variety may be used so long as the same variety is used for all three boxes.

Following incident XXXX-07, any personnel involved in the transport or usage of SCP-XXXX are to be reminded that all three boxes contain newspapers, not wooden tablets etched with unreadable text. Additionally, personnel who have read the restricted portions of this file are not permitted to handle SCP-XXXX directly.

Any researchers wishing to perform tests on SCP-XXXX must ensure their compliance with the additional experimental integrity measures detailed in appendices XXXX-A and -B.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a single-wall cardboard box with no external markings of any kind. It is approximately 32 centimeters long, 27 centimeters wide, and 21 centimeters tall. One end of the box has experienced deformation consistent with crushing during shipping. Two of the four cardboard flaps on the top of SCP-XXXX will naturally shut over time unless held open, but testing has shown this to be a non-anomalous property of its construction.

SCP-XXXX’s anomalous properties manifest only while its contents are not being observed by any means. For the purposes of SCP-XXXX, observation includes any means by which one of more properties, including weight, shape, color, volume, and density, of its contents are monitored, whether by a human or a machine. For unknown reasons, thinking about the contents of the box will count as an observation in certain circumstances, while simulating them on a computer does not. Recording devices which are located entirely within SCP-XXXX do not count as observers and are affected by SCP-XXXX’s anomalous properties.

When its properties manifest, its previous contents are replaced with a stack of newspapers, and not by wooden tablets etched with unreadable text. The age, brand, and contents of the newspapers varies between openings, and it is rare for all or even most of the newspapers to match the actual headlines for the listed dates. In roughly 35% of all cases, newspapers were present which did not match any known company, past or present, despite having dates in the past. In rare cases the newspapers have had various abnormalities, including reporting events which were subject to successful foundation coverups, having distorted nonsensical text and images, and in one case having no text whatsoever on any page but the front. In no cases has the box ever contained wooden tablets etched with unreadable text rather than newspapers. Although there have been apparent correlations between the initial contents of the box and the resulting newspapers in the past, the inconsistent nature of these supposed correlations suggests that they are purely coincidental.
