Item #: SCP-XXXX

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be contained in a small room tiled in a white and brown checkerboard. To ensure it is otherwise as featureless as possible, any lights are to be installed behind the tiles and shine through them. Millimeter wave radar and multiple acoustic sensors are to be installed in the walls and monitored remotely.

Any increased acoustic activity followed by complete lack thereof is to be considered a potential breach. Any discontinuity in microwave detection is to be considered a breach. In such event, the room and the directly exterior section of the corridor are to be locked down and flooded with clean, inert gas from the automatic fire extinguisher system. If neutralization is required, the lock down is to be sustained for at least 2 hours. If not, after 5 minutes the object can be recovered and moved to its containment room using an allocated grabber, which then needs to be replaced and incinerated. A standard Geiger counter can be used to detect SCP-XXXX-1 instances and track SCP-XXXX's movements.

No other SCPs should be brought near SCP-XXXX without O5 Council authorization. No object very similar to SCP-XXXX's current appearance should be brought near SCP-XXXX. Under no circumstances one should touch SCP-XXXX directly, or have it touch irreplaceable documents or objects.

Description: SCP-XXXX is a creature that, instead of changing its camouflage to match the environment, changes the environment to match the camouflage.

Changes involve color (within the IR-VIS-UV spectrum), shape and texture and require direct contact. If the environment is somewhat similar to SCP-XXXX already, the change and its side effects do not occur. However, if the environment is very similar, it will be changed completely to mimic SCP-XXXX, including internal structure on the atomic level.

Any affected objects are designated SCP-XXXX-1. This may cause a creation of another instance of SCP-XXXX. During initial examination an exposed toy goat began to bleed and, shortly thereafter, scream. Thanks to quick reflexes of Dr. █████████ the potential replica was incinerated without harm to the original. Also notable is the incident with a D-Class who hugged SCP-XXXX, causing [REDACTED] which nearly caused a breach.

These changes appear permanent and happen over 2-3 seconds, presumably up to 20 seconds when the complete mimicry is considered. Aside from significant but harmless amounts of beta negative radiation SCP-XXXX-1 are indistinguishable from objects of non-anomalous origin. This radiation signature fades with a half-life of 610 years.

Further testing of the replication hypothesis, as well as planting SCP-XXXX-1 instances in civilian laboratories, was denied by O5 Council. This may change if the risks and costs of containing two SCP-XXXXs are eventually outweighed by the confidence a SCP-XXXX can be effectively neutralized and any benefits from SCP-XXXX-1 as a versatile electron source.

It currently appears to be a small, baby goat weighing approximately 4 kg. No food or water is required, but it will be consumed and excreted. The excreta and other fluids, designated SCP-XXXX-2, appear non-anomalous at first, however upon closer inspection it won't be affected by SCP-XXXX. SCP-XXXX-2 can be easily neutralized in temperature in excess of 500 K for 10 minutes or 1150 K for 10 seconds. A method of creating SCP-XXXX-proof enclosure out of processed SCP-XXXX-2 without losing this property is pending.

The entity seems to need breathing oxygen or else it begins to faint. Any cuts heal within days. It doesn't appear to have aged since containment in ████. It seems very peaceful and soothing, however testing whether it's an anomalous effect remains inconclusive.

Extensive efforts were undertaken to uncover its origins, to no avail. It is therefore assumed that either this form is not its original one, or that the anomaly came into being spontaneously in the middle of a civilian office in █████, ████████, where its presence was first documented.

Due to the risks related to a feedback loop between adaptive camouflage and adapting the environment, the initial classification was Keter. Research revealed no ability of SCP-XXXX to change its own appearance on will or to mimic the environment, downgrading the classification to Euclid and, in ████, to Safe. Despite that, non-optical sensors are being used in containment.

In case the adaptive properties are demonstrated or change to permit a NK-class scenario, for instance through voluntary shapeshifting (as opposed to contact shapeshifting), and SCP-XXXX-2-made enclosure is not functional, SCP-XXXX is to be neutralized immediately.
