Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be sealed within a 2'x2' wooden box lined with insulating foam, which is then to be depressurized by standard vacuum-induction procedures. Once the interior of the box is devoid of any medium through which sound can travel, the box is then to be kept in a 8'x5'x10' room, which is also to be lined with insulating foam. Standard wall mounted cameras are to be aimed at the box from the four ceiling corners of the room, to ensure that the entire room is surveyed.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a Roberts R800 AM/FM portable transistor radio, the exterior of which has been scored with several minor dents, which plays without any observable power source. The songs played from the radio are only as recent as 1989; no newer music has been observed to play from the radio.
Upon hearing a song, any sentient being will then have the song "stuck in their head", and will be observed repeating said song in various ways, namely through rhythmic tapping, humming and singing, despite lack of knowledge of the language in which the song was played. The subject will then grow more frantic over the course of several days, showing symptoms of schizophrenia and intense paranoia, with all delusions being the same: hearing the song originally heard, as if played on the same radio, but in a nearby location. The subject will always be able to hear the song, and according to reports, with only three seconds between repetitions.
Mounting mental instability becomes apparent, which leads to erratic and often destructive behaviors, though the two that most-consistently manifest are the mutilation and total destruction of any and all sensory organs involved in the processing of sound and cranial mutilation, through any means available, typically against a wall or with a blunt instrument.
SCP-XXXX can be countered through the use of memory and perception-altering substances, though not strictly through memetic counter agents. If applied soon enough, substances such as common marijuana can be applied, and thus will lessen or even stave off mental deterioration. However, low-class amnesiatic substances are the only way to truly "cure" a subject of the condition.
Addendum: Upon further observation, it seems that multiple subjects, even when present at the same time of exposure to SCP-XXXX, will hear different songs. Further study is required to find a connection between the songs and test subjects. Class-D personnel are the only subjects to be used in experimentation at this time.
