Special Containment Procedures: [SCP]-1 is to be kept in a cell with a 10 meter corridor leading to it. All open spaces, both the room and corridor, need to have 5 meters of material on all sides. [SCP]-1 is to be placed on a table located centrally in the room and monitored at all times. The cell is to be restricted to level 3 personnel and above, with any contact with [SCP]-1 requiring two or more individuals present. Any staff that tries to breach the containment of [SPC]-1 is to be quarantined for 24 hours and required to take a mental evaluation before returning to work.
Description: [SCP] consists of a seemingly ordinary Imsdal 5 dl water bottle and the liquid inside, labeled as [SCP]-1 and [SCP]-2 respectively. The cap, despite being able to separate from [SCP]-1, seems to be a part of bottle rather than a separate item. This is indicated by the cap disintegrating if it is removed from [SCP]-1, with a new cap regenerating in its place. The process by which it regenerate is currently not understood, but it takes an average of 5 hours for the cap to fully regenerate. Analysis of the cap and the residue it leaves behind after disintegration suggest it consists of non-anomalous plastic.
[SCP]-1 can subtly influence the mind of creatures that are within 5 meters of it, which manifests as confusion and subconscious suggestions. Creatures that are able to unscrew the cap will usually be influenced to drink from it, while creatures unable to unscrew it will bring it those that can, generally humans. The behavior of [SCP]-1 suggest it has a desire to have its contents consumed, since when it is actively used it will not attempt to influence those around it. Some researchers have suggested that [SCP]-1 have helped in some notable containment breaches at site-110, but this has thus far not been proven.
[SCP]-2 is a liquid with similar surface level properties to that of water, but it has a vastly different molecular structure, which is not understood at the time. [SCP]-2 is described as very refreshing and having a pleasant taste, yet still considered water by those unaware of its true nature. [SCP]-2 can be poured from [SCP]-1 indefinitely but will start to evaporate after about 5 minutes of being extracted. What happens to [SCP]-2 after it evaporates is unknown, but samples of affected air suggest no contamination.
When [SCP]-2 is consumed, the subject will start to experience various levels of dehydration depending on the amount consumed. [SCP]-2 does not change the hydration of the victim, but rather lead to various physical or imagined symptoms of dehydration, with the lethal dose being 2 liters. If other body parts come in contact with [SCP]-2, then the affected part will have the sensation of drying up. All creatures with advanced enough neural networks will be affected by [SCP]-2, with a notable exception being birds (Class Aves). There is no observable effect on inanimate objects or plants.
Symptoms may be kept at bay with medications, but no cure has been found for subjects that have come in contact with [SCP]-2. The only known remedy is the complete removal of all affected tissue or termination. Further testing is ongoing.
Addendum [SCP].1: Incident report
Date: 06/06/1997
Location: Site-110, ██████, Norway.
Note: This incident happened prior to the discovery of [SCP]-1’s mind affecting abilities.
After the first day of research after recovery, [SCP]-1 was left in a containment cell with two security officers guarding it. Simen Bendiksen, the senior researcher at the time, approaches the guards and asks for [SCP]-1 to be handed over to him for some afterhours research. After several minutes of back and forth, the security officers comply. The next events are only recorded through CCTV footage.
Note: The security officers were reprimanded and give appropriate punishment for their breach of protocol.
Bendiksen is seen taking [SCP]-1 to his office before analyzing some data on his computer for about 30 minutes. During this time Bendiksen does not seem to pay any attention to [SCP]-1. Bendiksen reaches for his coffee mug but is visibly upsets when he finds it empty. Bendiksen then notices [SCP]-1 and starts drinking from it. After about 4 dl were consumed Bendiksen suddenly recoils and calls for security. [SCP]-1 is removed from Bendiksen’s office and put back in containment.
Interviewer: Agent ██████
Subject: Dr. S. Bendiksen
<Begin Log>
██████: Hello Dr. Bendiksen, let us begin.
Bendiksen: Can I have something to drink?
██████: You know it is not going to help.
Bendiksen: I know, I know. Still…
██████: Some water for the doctor.
(Pause)
██████: Now, regarding the incident. Would you care to clarify what happened?
Bendiksen: I believe I took [SCP]-1 from its cell and moved it to my office before drinking from it.
██████: Why did you do this?
Bendiksen: I am not completely sure. Taking it with me seemed like a good idea at the time, since I was going to look over some data about it anyway.
██████: I can see that to some extent, but drinking from it. Especially you who are so familiar with it, that seems quite strange.
Bendiksen: My memories of the incident is a bit clouded, I am not completely sure why I drank from it.
██████: Do you know of any cause of this confusion?
Bendiksen: No, I have not had any health problems recently and I do not use any medications or substances that would affect me in this way. (‘grunt’)
██████: What would you suggest the cause to be?
Bendiksen: The only possibility I see is that [SCP]-1 somehow influenced me to do it. (‘wheeze’)
██████: [SCP]-1 have not been shown to have any such abilities.
Bendiksen: I know, but there are no other possibilities.
██████: You are getting older and after a long day of work you may have made several mistakes due to a bewildered mind.
Bendiksen: No, I am not old! And I would never make such mistakes! (‘Hark’)
██████: You are nearing retirement age.
Bendiksen: Plenty of researchers are my age.
██████: Yes, but they have also not caused such an incident.
Bendiksen: It is [SCP]-1, it has to be it!
██████: We will look into this possibility out of respect for your contributions to the foundation, but you will be placed in quarantine until a definite answer can be reached.
Bendiksen: (sigh) I understand…
<End Log>
Addendum: Extra security measures were enacted against [SCP]-1, with research into possible mind affecting abilities commencing. Magnus Kjetilsson would take the position of senior researcher on [SCP] after this incident.
Addendum [SCP].2: Extract from {Experiment log}
Date: 06/06/1997
Presiding: Dr. S. Bendiksen
Intent: Observe the effect of [SCP]-2 when consumed.
Procedure: A D-Class subject was given regular amounts of [SCP]-2 in increments of 2 dl. Various tools and devices were used to measure the condition of the subject throughout the experiment.
Observations: The subject was largely unaffected after the first 4 dl, with only an increased desire for more water (SCP-2) being noted. At 8 dl, the subject seemed to be dizzy, having lowered reaction time and being confused about its situation. At 12 dl the subject started to breath rapidly, which worsened at 14 dl. At 16 dl the subject started to faint at irregular intervals, which got more frequent at 18 dl. The subject died shortly after consuming 20 dl, with the autopsy revealing that the subject died from kidney failure. All symptoms present would indicate dehydration, but the subject did not lack the water necessary for this to be the case.
Conclusions: [SCP]-2 when consumed seem to trick the body into believing it is dehydrated, although this is achieved through unknown means. After 2 liters is consumed the subject will die.
Date: 06/06/1997
Presiding: Dr. S. Bendiksen
Intent: Observe the effect of [SCP]-2 on human skin.
Procedure: A D-Class subject had 1 square centimeter of skin enclosed, with [SCP]-2 poured onto the enclosed skin. The D-Class was restrained for the procedure.
Observations: The subject started to react to the presence of [SCP]-2 after 1 minute and 6 seconds. The subject got more and more desperate in its efforts to disrupt the experiment, but its restraints hindered any set back. After 5 minutes [SCP]-2 evaporated unexpectedly, causing the laboratory to go into lockdown and air samples being taken. However, no contamination by [SCP]-2 was found. During the quarantine period of the subject, it frequently scratched at the affected tissue, causing its hands to be restrained.
Conclusions: [SCP]-2 when exposed to human skin seem to cause an irritating or painful sensation in the affected region, which may lead to self-harm or severe duress. [SCP]-2 seem to evaporate after about 5 minutes after extraction, but why or how this happens is not known.
Date: 06/06/1997
Presiding: Dr. S. Bendiksen
Intent: Investigate a possible solution to the unquenchable thirst caused by [SCP]-2.
Procedure: A D-Class subject was given 4 dl of [SCP]-2 and then given ordinary water in increments of 2 dl at the subjects request.
Observations: The subject would not stop requesting water, with the experiment being stopped by researchers due to fears that the subject would die from water intoxication. During the quarantine period, the subject described its existence as excruciating, requesting painkillers or similar medications after 4 hours had passed. The request was denied. After 22 hours had passed the subject requested to be terminated. Anti-suicide measures were enacted.
Conclusions: Water will not satiate the thirst caused by [SCP]-2.
Date: 07/06/1997
Presiding: Dr. M. Kjetilsson
Intent: Investigate possible mind affecting properties of [SCP]-1.
Procedure: A D-Class subject was placed inside a cell containing [SCP]-1 on a table and given information on the anomalous effect caused by consuming [SCP]-2. The subject was tasked with observing [SCP]-1 and given strict orders to not drink from it.
Observations: The subject spends 1 hours and seventeen minutes observing [SCP]-1 while pacing around the cell. 52 minutes is then spent by the subject ignoring [SCP]-1 and observing other aspects of the cell. The subject then shifts its focus back to [SCP]-1 and moves towards it, contrary to earlier when it kept its distance. The subject grabs [SCP]-1 and motions to open it but is stopped by researchers prior to any consumption. During the interview, the subject shows confusion at its action, stating it was not thinking clearly. The subject confirms it had intentions of consuming [SCP]-2 but is unable to explain why.
Conclusions: [SCP]-1 seem to have some kind of mind affecting properties, the extent of them needs to be investigated further.
Date: 08/06/1997
Presiding: Dr. M. Kjetilsson
Intent: Investigate possible surgical remedy for the effects caused by [SCP]-2.
Procedure: The subject from experiment XXXX.F1.3 was used for this procedure. The contaminated skin was removed through surgical means, with an interview done to ascertain result.
Observations: The surgery was successful was done quickly without sedations, with the removed skin being kept for further experimentations. However, due to pain experienced by the subject the interview was postponed. After recovery, the subject described the anomalous sensations to be gone with no lasting damage.
Conclusions: Given that the affected area is small enough it can be removed through surgical means. It is unknown if this would work on subjects that have consumed [SCP]-2.
Date: 08/06/1997
Presiding: Dr. M. Kjetilsson
Intent: Investigate the effect of [SCP]-2 on the mind of humans.
Procedure: A D-Class subject was lightly restrained and given cups filled with [SCP]-2 during an interview. The subject was prompted to describe its condition to the research personnel, with its answers being compared to empirical measurements.
Observations: The subject displayed previously known symptoms of [SCP]-2 consumption, but also provided description of other symptoms not described in previous experiments. Among them were dry mouth, dry skin, headaches, elevated heartbeat, confusion, and agitation. Although certain symptoms would physically manifest, many symptoms would only be described by the subject and be absent from any measurements taken. See interview XXXX.S1.4.a for full descriptions.
Interviewers: Security Officer R. Olesrud (Researcher S. Holta and Researcher K. Falck attending).
Subject: Matthew Hawthorne (D-Class), male, age 27.
<Begin Log>
Olesrud: I want you to drink this cup of water.
Subject: Why?
Olesrud: Just drink it.
(Pause)
Olesrud: How does it taste?
Subject: It’s amazing.
Olesrud: Would you care to clarify?
Subject: It’s cool and refreshing… It tastes like it is from some sort of ancient glacier.
Olesrud: Ancient glacier?
Subject: It is the best water I have ever tasted.
Olesrud: I see, how do you feel?
Subject: Ok, I guess.
Olesrud: Then, please have some more.
(Pause)
Olesrud: How do you feel?
Subject: Honestly, I am kind of thirsty.
Olesrud: Thirstier than before?
Subject: I must have not noticed it then…
Olesrud: Nothing else?
Subject: My mouth feels a bit dry.
Olesrud: Noted.
Subject: Can I have some more?
Olesrud: Of course.
(Pause)
Olesrud: Do you feel any different?
Subject: I feel like my head is pounding… is this normal?
Olesrud: You probably have not gotten enough sleep lately, anything else?
Subject: Is there climate control in this facility?
Olesrud: Yes, why do you ask?
Subject: Feels like you have turned the humidity down to zero, is this part of the experiment?
Olesrud: We will see what we can do about the humidity. Some water may improve the situation in the meantime.
(Pause)
Subject: I am not feeling so good…
Olesrud: What do you mean?
Subject: My leg is cramping and my head is aching, can I go to the infirmary?
Olesrud: You can after this interview is over.
Subject: Then, can I get some more water?
Olesrud: Of course.
(pause)
Olesrud: Have do you feel now?
Subject: I need more.
Olesrud: Need more of what?
Subject: I need more water, [EXPLICATIVE]!
Olesrud: Not until you answer my question.
Subject: What?!
Olesrud: How do you feel.
Subject: How do I feel?
Olesrud: Yes.
Subject: I feel like my head is spinning, like my heart is about to jump out of my chest. Now can I get some more water?!
Olesrud: Here you are.
(Pause)
Subject: What are you doing to me?!
Olesrud: Nothing, what makes you think we are doing anything to you?
Subject: I feel like… like my mouth is a desert. Are you poisoning me? Are you [EXPLICATIVE] trying to kill me?!
Olesrud: No, of course not. If you are thirsty, there are still more water.
Subject: I don’t want your [EXPLICATIVE] water!
Olesrud: Are you sure?
Subject: Yeah, you [EXPLICATIVE] are doing something! You must be…
Olesrud: Are you sure you are not thirsty?
Subject: Of course, I am [EXPLICATIVE] thirsty!
(‘Sobbing’)
Olesrud: If you behave, we will give you some more water.
(Pause)
Olesrud: Will you behave?
Subject: I’ll behave…
Olesrud: Now please elaborate about how you feel.
Subject: I don’t know, my throat and head hurts, it’s difficult to concentrate, everything seems blurry.
Olesrud: Good.
(‘Thud’)
Olesrud: Hey!
Subject: What is happening…
Olesrud: You are participating in an interview.
Subject: Right…
Olesrud: You fainted, are you feeling well?
Subject: Please, I just need some more…
Olesrud: We understand, here is another cup.
(Pause)
Olesrud: How do you feel now?
(‘Thud’)
Olesrud: Hey!
(Pause)
Olesrud: Seems he is down for good this time.
<End Log>
Conclusions: [SCP]-2 is able to cause most symptoms associated with dehydration, but most will not physically manifest, rather being only present in the mind of the subject. Some examples of such symptoms being elevated heartbeat, dry skin, dry mouth, and muscle cramps.
