The Black-and-White Mare
rating: 0+x

Item: SCP-xxxx

Object Class: Euclid

"O cavallina, cavallina storna, che portavi colui che non ritorna."
"Oh (little) mare, black-and-white mare, you that carryed the unreturning one." Are the first rhymes of document-xxxx-alfa. This document, while artistic in nature, is the first description of SCP-xxxx-1. At the date of writing, ██/██/████, the debate about the document being directly linked to the Black-and-White Mare's genesis is still ongoing.

Special Containment Procedures Instances of SCP-xxxx-1 are non-anomalous and docile. A stable or equine-sized room is recommended as a standard containment, and every mare appears accustomed to barns and stalls. Euclid classification is required due to the fact that all SCP-xxxx-1 can not be contained without the direct involvement of SCP-xxxx-2 instances, and will often remain uncontained. SCP-xxxx-2s can not be forced to comply with staff's requests, and containment is possible only when they willingly agree to it.
Once an agreement is reached, the containment can be easily achieved through any means. Tranquillizers guns or net barriers can be considered as standard containment equipment. Once containment is obtained, SCP-xxxx-1 will instantaneously lose all its anomalous properties. Therefore a high awareness of the terrain, or lack thereof, is required to avoid scenarios similar to Test-xxxx II.
Termination of the Mares can be carried out through any means available, but it is superfluous. While containment is easily achieved and recommended for research purposes, it never affects the anomalous properties of SCP-xxxx.
At the date of writing, ██/██/████ detachment 15 of MTF-iota-10 "Damn Feds" is tasked with acquiring, through liaison agencies, legal authority over any suspected incident involving SCP-xxxx. In the case of confirmed instances, any cover-up operation must be conducted by detachment 15 of MTF-epsilon-6 "Village Idiots" through the administration of class G amnestic and the "Bitter-Sweet Folktale" cover story.
In case of high-profile incidents, defined as involving multiple SCP-xxxx-1 instances and a number greater than 1000 witnesses, the deployment of MTF-gamma-5 "Red Herrings" can be allowed by at least one level four personnel.
In the case of incidents resembling Incident-xxxx-257, the deployment of MTF-sigma-21 will be ordered by one 05 member.

Description: As SCP-xxxx is defined the uncontained, likely reality-bending, anomaly that causes the appearances of SCP-xxxx-1.
Instances of SCP-xxxx-1 are black-and-white adult female equines, mainly domesticated mares or female donkeys. All instances have bicoloured coats, no peculiar ratio between colours has been observed. The mares usually spotted in sparsely populated regions. It is not known if the appearance of Scp-xxxx-1 is anomalous in nature, or if a pre-existing equine is influenced by Scp-xxxx anomalous properties. The mares are usually first observed into a 100 km radius from the target, which will be subsequently referred to as Scp-xxx-2.
SCP-xxxx-2s are elderly, dying or agonizing humans normally located in depopulated regions. When uninterrupted, SCP-xxxx-1 will run directly towards the target, placed in location A. Upon reaching location A it will employ limited memetic means to compel the dying person to straddle her. Then it gallops away in the direction of locations significant to the target's life. When such places are not into a 22,9 Km radius from A, the Mare will gallop in an aleatory direction. Throughout the outbound ride, speed is anomalous and differs depending on the target personal preferences, ranging usually from 22,9 km/h to 380 km/h. SCP-xxxx-2 will pass away at the 22,9 Km mark.
Through testing, it was established that the mares are not responsible for the target's death. Autopsies on asymptomatic targets have shown how death is always ascribable to non-anomalous silent pathologies. The fast galloping does not provoke pain or discomfort for SCP-xxxx-2, which is considered part of the Mare memetic properties.
SCP-xxxx-1 will then proceed to carry the deceased back to location A. After the 22,9 km mark, the mare loses all its anomalous properties. No mare has been observed regaining them, but research on the matter is ongoing.
SCP-xxxx-1 can not be terminated or contained during the approach to location A, unless by explicit request of the target. Targets can also resist the memetic effects, especially when they are aware of them. Targets will also often report hearing music and familiar voices once the Mare is on the 100 km inbound route; while this is usually correlated with stronger memetic effects on the targets, they still appear capable of choosing whether to ride the Mares.

Document-xxxx-alfa
Published by Italian poet Giovanni ███████ in 1903, is an account of the event that happened in the night of the 10 August 1863. The poet's father ███████ ███████, an estate manager that had numerous political and work-related rivalries, was shot by an unknown attacker while travelling back home on a carriage. The Black-and-White Mare that was dragging the cart panicked, but was capable of completing the 22,9 km travel to the man's home.
███████ ███████ died during the escape. In document-xxxx-alfa, the son recalls a conversation between his mother and the Mare. He hints that the horse was born wild, but still possessed high intelligence. He also reported that the mare neighed when questioned about the identity of the murderer, apparently confirming one of the mother's suspect.
The poetic and partially esoteric nature of document-xxxx- alfa lead to the above-mentioned theory, which is supported only by a number of irrelevant correlations between it and the Black-and-White Mare.
The higher frequency of Mare's sighting in continental Europe is ascribable to a mixture of highly populated and depopulated region, ideal for generating instances of SCP-xxxx-2 and for spotting the otherwise plain horse. The existing Italian folklore concerning the Mare must be dismissed as proof of SCP-xxxx being originated by the events of 1863. Dr Malaspina's hypothesis about the true source of SCP-xxxx-1 instances has no scientific ground and has no practical implication in the research for the Mare's nature.

Reports of sightings, tests and incidents involving xxxx-1 instances
Report xxxx-001 I
In date ██/██/1916 the ██ alpine-infantry company of the Regio Esercito Italiano, deployed in the Carso's highland, reports multiple desertions after a manmade avalanche blocked the unit on a glacier. 45 casualties from frostbite are reported, together with the appearance of 11 horse and donkeys. It's noted that the area is too harsh for the deployment of pack animals and that the fugitives must have received them from the Austro-Hungarian regiment that provoked the avalanche.
An investigation on possible Austrian infiltrations within the chain of commands is launched, with no results or proof. Nevertheless, 2 of the 28 witnesses are found guilty of defeatism and being likely colluding with the deserters, and sentenced to death.
Report xxxx-001 A-H
In date ██/██/1916 the ██ Tyrolian Platoon of the Landstreitkräfte Österreich-Ungarns, deployed in the Carso's highland, reports the successful sapping of the ██ valley. 1 casualty is reported after an error in the landmine's deployment, and one wounded. The wounded was kept in stable conditions until he started complaining about hearing voices and loud music. The man started being delirious and stood up on his feet, dangerously close to a cliffside. His entire platoon saw a Black-and-White donkey climbing up a near-vertical slope at an unnatural speed, before stopping in front of the wounded soldier. Once he was on the animal, it proceeded down the vertical slope at walking speed.
All the witnesses of the incident were sent to psychiatric hospitals.
Malaspina's audio log Note to self: the Mare was surely reaping around the common folks during the war, but researching into military documents often grants highly detailed reports. No sightings are dated before 1863 which is also proof of the connection between ████████████████ ████████. …. aaand they are going to redact all of this, isn't it?
Report xxxx-002 to xxxx-079
Suspected instances of the Mare appearing 77 times between 1916 and 1939, in continental Europe.
Mostly reported by Austrian, Belgian, German, Russian, French and Spanish law enforcement agencies as disappearances or kidnappings. 58 of the targets were shepherds or farmer dying from the Spanish Flu Pandemic. 1 incident with multiple instances of SCP-xxxx-1 happened on date 26 April 1937, during the bombing of ████████. When victims were transported out of the burning city, into the sparsely populated countryside, the Mares started appearing.
Malaspina's audio log Note to self: No incident has ever occurred in a Location A inhabited by more than roughly 150 individuals. Still, it's not clear if this is just a correlation or if the targets are somehow required to not die in urban areas. Still, the number of witnesses is often inflated by the towns and villages on the Mare's route, mainly because the SCP starts climbing around like some glitchy videogame horse when it is inbound.
Report xxxx-080
In date ██/██/1918 an instance of SCP-xxxx-1 appears near Fort Riley, Kansas. Nurse ███████ ███████ left her barracks and is seen riding on a Mare. This is the first instance of SCP-xxxx-1 that is contained after her target's death, with some document reporting its subsequent disappearance. It's also the first recorded instance outside continental Europe.
Malaspina's audio log Note to self: location and timing of incident 80 may suggest that the Mare chooses targets with major infectious illnesses or that are dying a natural death. It might be necessary to get a clearance for the use of viral pathogens to conduct testing on Ds.
Report xxxx-081
In date ██/██/1934 multiple instances of SCP-xxxx-1 appeared near Yudu, Jiangxi. During a 1-year period, multiple Mares followed the movement of the Red Army, taking dozens of targets between the isolated detachment.
Reports xxxx-082 to xxxx-123
Suspected instances appearing 41 times worldwide and 35 in Nazi-occupied Europe, between 1939 and 1945. More instances are mentioned in secondary sources, with primary sources being presumedly lost or destroyed during the war.
Report xxxx-124
In date ██/██/1942, agent Witold Pilecki reports an instance appearing near Oświęcim, Poland. The Mare's anomalous properties are described in details as SCP-xxxx-1 broke into a newly constructed block of the concentration camp. The Mare is described running over barbed wire barriers and steel fences while being shot by the few guards stationed in location A. Gunfire proved ineffective also in killing SCP-xxxx-2 while on horseback. German sources reported that the Mare was contained after the targets death. Subsequent vivisection and dissection of the horse brought no further proof of any anomaly.
Reports xxxx-125 to xxxx-147
Suspected instances appearing 22 times worldwide between 1954 to 1979. A first detailed report in the African continent coming from French intelligence units in Algeria, with prisoners escaping interrogation riding multiple SCP-xxxx-1.

In date ██/██/1985 the SCP foundation started investigating SCP-xxxx.
Test-xxxx I
In date ██/██/1997 Dr Malaspina started testing near site-22. Location A is staffed by 15 level 2 and 3 personnel and separated from any human presence by 75 km of grasslands. The 100 km perimeter is regularly patrolled and aerial reconnaissance is carried out daily. 30 D-class personnel were administered arsenic pills in differing dosages of 50 / 100 / 5000 micrograms per litre.
23 D-class die without any instance of SCP-xxxx-1 appearing.
D-15079 start suffering from repeated cardiac arrests and is revived 2 times. After that, he reported hearing voices and music.
On date 25/03/1998 and time 04:21, SCP-xxxx-1 appeared. Sandbag walls and barbed wire barrier are constructed on the Mare's course. The anomaly ran over these obstacles without decelerating. D-15079 is wired and placed in a standard humanoid containment cell. The Mare entered Location A at 05:12. Doors and physical object are traversed by anomalous means, mainly phasing through or over them. Living obstacles are displaced. No injuries are reported despite the high-velocity impacts.
D-15079 keep reporting hearing voices and "the best music ever". SCP-xxxx-1 entered the humanoid containment cell through anomalous means. Being the cell too small to fit the 180 cm tall animal, parts of her hind limb and head continuously phased into the containment wall. D-15079 had enough room to get on his feet and mount on the Mare. The outbound gallop started immediately in a randomic direction, anomalously passing inside obstacles.
SCP-xxxx-1 reached the speed of 150 km/h before reaching the 22,9 km mark. D-15079 remained mostly silent during the ride, leaving unimportant comments on the speed and the "weird stuff" he felt while phasing through objects. SCP-xxxx-1 was immediately contained.
All the remaining D-class died without attracting any Mare.
SCP-xxxx-1A was a 180 cm tall, 859 kg heavy draft-horse. No tag or markings were found on her. No unusual behavior was observed. SCP-xxxx-1A was kept in the same barrack that housed the 4 remaining D-class. No unusual response to human suffering was observed.
On date 31/07/1998 SCP-xxxx-1A was terminated. No abnormalities have been observed during the autopsy.
Reports xxxx-148 to xxxx-235 Numerous sightings worldwide between 1979 to 2015. High profile cases with up to 1000 witnesses requested direct foundation intervention and the mass deployment of class G and B amnestics. The cover stories Bad CG and Dreams of Skyrim proved relatively ineffective and had to be replaced with Bitter-sweet folktale. Internet surveillance was established, with rumours and eventual video evidence isolated by AI dominated echo chambers tracking witnesses and deleting compromising files.

Test-xxxx II In date ██/██/2015 further funding was granted to the construction and testing in site-25 "The Lighthouse" on ████████ Island in the Arctic sea. Location A is separated by 45 km of waters untouched by nautical traffic. The 100 km perimeter is patrolled daily with staff undercover as native whalers and drones.
Subjects: 97 D-class personnel divided in four groups, A1, A2, H1, H2.
Hypothesis 1: SCP-xxxx-1 are more frequent in cases of epidemic diseases or famines in deurbanized areas. Monitoring outbreaks and economic instabilities in rural regions bordering highly populated areas will then be necessary to preventively deploy MTFs and suppress media and online coverage of the anomalies.
Hypothesis 2: SCP-xxxx-1 never forces SCP-xxxx-2 decision to ride or not. If the target chooses to not mount the SCP, termination can be instantly achieved. Satellite surveillance united with real-time monitoring of sightings allows the triangulation of the target's position, which can be reached before the Mare, briefed on the situation and pushed toward allowing the Mare's termination.
Group A1 "Control group": 22 D-class personnel were administered trivalent arsenin pills and not given any instruction. D-892424 regained consciousness after her week-long coma and reported hearing her deceased mother voice and one instance of SCP-xxxx-1 was sighted on the northern coast of ██████. It then proceeded to gallop on the water, followed by one surveillance drone that allowed interception by two motorboats. Gunfire and explosive had no visible effect on the Mare. One whaling harpoon was fired, resulting in the Mare becoming briefly incorporeal to avoid it. The Mare proceeded on ████████ Island and into the Lighthouse, reaching the shackled D-892424. Upon coming into contact with SCP-xxxx-1, SCP-xxxx-2 became incorporeal and passed through the handcuffs and the bed. She then mounted the Mare and said nothing until her death due to arsenin encefalopathy. SCP-xxxx-1 did not lose its anomalous properties at the 22,9 km mark. Dr Malaspina ordered the termination of the Mare, which was carried out without any further difficulties. Notably, the terminated horse's corpse kept anomalously floating over the water, together with the target remains. They were left untouched for five days by order of Dr Malaspina; in which the two cadavers remained completely unmoved by winds and sea currents, but started to show signs of decay and attracted scavengers that were promptly terminated. Due to reports on passing naval traffic, the anomalous remains had to be recovered and brought back to Location A. No further reality-bending was exhibited by the corpses after they reached site-25
Malaspina's audio log Note to self: we always thought that the Mare became completely normal after the twenty-three kilometres, just because we were able to contain or terminate them. This isn't the case so…. There must be something out there that gives every x-1 their power. The Mare is just a vessel for …. whatever the fuck SCP-xxxx is. *sigh* this is just 4999 with extra steps! Why they even keep The Mare out of Keter class?
Group A2 "Betrayers": 25 D-class personnel given arsenin pills and instructed to turn down the Mare, implying that SCP-xxxx would eat them alive/ steal their soul for satan. D-31240 regained consciousness after their two-day coma and reported knowing about the Mare's nature and knowing that they were lied to. Further attempts at convincing D-31240 to keep following instruction fail, including multiple threats to undisclosed civilian acquaintances and family members. They correctly called our bluff. The Mare was sighted in the same position of the previous test, reached D-31240 unopposed and proceeded with the usual movement pattern. At the 22,9 km mark, there was an attempt at containment through a dart gun. Failed due to SCP-xxxx-1 sinking into the sea once unconscious and getting dragged by the heavy currents. The horse was recovered in a severely hypothermic state, which worsened during transport resulting in the mare's death.
Malaspina's audio log Note to self: we still don't really know how this works. The dead horse floated and the unconscious didn't. The only way this can make some sense is if …. it doesn't… whatever is making the Mares into anomalies is changing the rules. Somehow…
Group H1 "Malleus": 25 D-class are exposed to an aerosol containing Burkholderia Mallei which, united with immunosuppressant drugs administered through food and waters, granted a 95% morbidity in the first 10 days. No further instructions were given to the subjects. 5 instances of SCP-xxxx-1 sighted and tracked during the test's duration and carried out their usual movement pattern. D-05444 proved highly resistant to the infection and was removed by testing to allow further research into genetic resistances against weapon-grade B. Mallei.
Group H2 "For science": 25 D-class infected with B. Mallei bacteria as per the previous test. All of the participants were briefed on The Mare's history, its anomalies and the Foundation's concern on its own secrecy. They were asked to be subject to a painful and probably fruitless death in order to try and resist SCP-xxxx's memetic properties, for science. All refused except ex-researchers D-58319 and D-32726. 7 instances of scp-xxxx-1 were sighted and tracked during testing, one of which responded in direct correlation to D-78519 return to consciousness.
The subject reported having no difficulty breathing and not feeling feverish despite his terminal pneumonia. It also reported hearing nothing but instead just feeling SCP-XXXX presence. He reported feeling aversion for the test and remarked how compassionate and weak the Mare's influence felt. After further questioning, he accepted to go on with the experiment but reaffirmed that it felt "like shooting at the red cross, just wrong".
He reported telepathically denying SCP-xxxx's offer. SCP-xxxx-1 instantly lost any reality-bending capabilities and was successfully contained. D-78519 quickly reported having shortness of breath and lost consciousness again, dying 1 hour after the Mare's containment.
Results Hypothesis 1 and 2 are elevated to Theories and containment protocols are advanced in light of the test's results. Subsequently, the foundation's effort in maintaining cover-ups on SCP-xxxx improved in quantity and success rate.

Report xxxx-249 In date ██/██/2016 one Scp-xxxx-1 was filmed and shared near █████, Switzerland. The speed and true course of the anomaly were rapidly evaluated and conducted to the private property of the █████████ family. Field agents were deployed rapidly undercover as Interpol officials. The family's private security was passed through forged warrants and by talking directly with ███████ █████████, wife of the bedridden ███████ █████████. After three years as a paralytic, the ex-pilot had regained the ability to walk and speak earlyer that day and reported hearing voices. He was then declared as SCP-XXXX-2 and contacted by Foundation agents. Target was briefed about the foundation and SCP-xxxx, and asked to deny the Mare's effect to allow a quick and harmless containment of the anomaly. SCP-xxxx-2 refused.
The Mare passed through the city of █████, reaching the target at Location A. Every subsequent movement was tracked and every witness amnesticized. Luckily, the outbound route was conducted at the record speed of 380 km/h (236mph) and the 22,9 km mark was reached in just 3 minutes and 36 seconds, reducing significantly the number of potential witnesses. 260 people were amnesticized. To date of writing, the █████████ family still has not disclosed to the public the death of ███████ █████████. A potential failure of the amnestics on one or multiple family members has been excluded, interference by some GOI is still in discussion.

Incident-xxxx-257 In date ██/██/2020 31 instances are spotted and filmed by civilians in █████, Lombardy, Italy. During the next 14 days, other 56 instances are sighted traversing the densely populated city. Due to the simultaneous government-mandated lockdown, the witnesses were estimated in the low thousands. MTF-sigma-1 executed the arial deployment of aerosolized class G amnestics. Fake news campaigns around SCP-xxxx-1 were successful, with highly doctored videos and photos of army trucks and vehicles spread online to disprove previous SCP's proofs. The cover-up stories chemtrails, 5G kills and Healthcare dictatorshipwere highly successful in keeping the public disinterested in most SCP's sightings.
