Special Containment Procedures: SCP-5259 is to be kept in a reinforced steel container at all times, with an aluminum covering on the inside and outside, to stop the flow of radiation. said container should be accessible only to Level 4+ personnel. SCP-5259's container is to be changed out once every two weeks in order to prevent it's decay, and exposure of personnel to raw SCP-5259 or SCP-5259 damaged materials.

All personnel that are involved with SCP-5259 regularly are to attend medical checkups and radiation screenings on a weekly basis. Any instances of SCP-5259-1 below stage 4 of the disease are to be restrained and given treatment. Any instances of SCP-5259-1 above/in stage 4 of the disease are to be keep in a level 3 containment cell for the rest of the their lives, and are not to be, fed, cared for or interacted with by other personnel in any way to prevent further infection. SCP-5259-1 cadavers and all other SCP-5259 affected items are to be handled exclusively by hazmat teams, and are to be rapped in aluminum-lined body bags/placed in aluminum lined containers and disposed of in the on site crematorium, with ashes being quarantined until they decay entirely. In the rare case of an instance of SCP-5259-2, the animal is to be quarantined in the nearest secure location room, and once it has died, the same protocols as SCP-5259-1 are to be implemented.

Description: SCP-5259 is a 15cm by 15cm by 15cm cube made of an unknown shiny metallic substance that emits a form of radioactivity. This radiation corrodes metals, warps wood, melts plastic and rots organic mass¹.SCP-5259's radiation infects nearby human and animals with a bizarre disease upon contact². human personnel are infected by SCP-5259's disease and are classed as SCP-5259-1. SCP-5259-1 instances begin to show a series of hazardous effects soon after contact, documented below in Addendum. SCP-5259-1 instances remain alive for approximately 15-17 days before dying of the disease or from related causes. The cadavers of SCP-5259-1 have similar properties to that of SCP-5259, However their effect is less potent when SCP-5259-1 has died of self inflicted wounds or starvation/thirst instead of the virus. Symptoms of the disease when SCP-5259-1 was infected by a SCP-5259-1 corpse show no differences. SCP-5259-1 who die in the early stages of the disease (stages 1-3) are non-anomalous, and do not spread the disease.

+ SCP-5259 Disease Symptoms/Timeline

1. Unusual Behavior

Personnel who come into contact with SCP-5259 start out normal, with no negative physical symptoms. however, SCP-5259-1 will strongly deny ever coming into contact with SCP-5259, and will refuse medic checks, cancel medical appointments and try to get out of any other form of medical treatment. this denial of contact with SCP-5259 and refusal of medical attention will continue up until SCP-5259-1's death. Forcing SCP-5259-1 into getting medical help will allow SCP-5259's disease to be treated³, and for the subject to make a full recovery in 1-2 weeks.

2. Radiation sickness

approximately 2.5 hours after SCP-5259-1's contact with SCP-5259, they begin to feel the documented symptoms of exposure to beta radiation, including nausea and vomiting, spontaneous bleeding and severe fatigue. it has been discovered that SCP-5259 gives out low levels of radiation normally, which in cases of long term exposure can have the same affects to coming in direct contact with SCP-5259. if SCP-5259- receives medical treatment at this stage, they are able to make a full recovery in 3-5 weeks.

3. Hallucinations/nightmares

Approximately 1 day after SCP-5259-1's contact with SCP-5259, they will start to see vivid hallucinations of black, shadowy figure staring at them. The hallucinations then worsen after 2-3 days where these figures are then reported to begin to follow SCP-5259-1 wherever they go. This also apparently marks the start of nightmares for SCP-5259-1, in which these same figures are reported to chase SCP-5259-1 through large, maze like structures, growing in numbers and eventually catching SCP-5259-1, prompting SCP-5259-1 to wake and display erratic an panicked, as they people and animals nearby have become these shadowy figures. Hallucinations of others as these shadow figures continue, worsening up until SCP-5259-1's death. if SCP-5259-1 is quickly given treatment before the next stage of the sickness begins, they have a chance to slowly recover over a period of 3-5 months.

4. Schizophrenia

Approximately 3-5 days after SCP-5259-1's contact with SCP-5259, they will develop a minor form of schizophrenia. If SCP-5259-1 reaches this stage, they are beyond treatment, and cannot be
cured. SCP-5259-1 begins to show all known signs of schizophrenia, including abnormal social behavior, failure to understand reality, false beliefs, unclear or confused thinking and hearing voices that others do not.

5. Mutations and minor loss of brain function

Approximately 7-9 days after contact, SCP-5259-1 begins to experience bizarre mutations on their human form. These include; permanent loss of hair, extreme extension of fingernails, (recorded maximum of 4 inches) disproportionate bone growth, facial deformities, and in rare cases, duplication of limbs and organs. It is unknown how far these mutations can go, as most cases of SCP-5259-1 only continue to live for a recorded maximum of 15-17 days. This stage also marks the beginning of SCP-5259-1 losing brain capability, with similar effects to that of dementia or Alzheimer's.

6. Severe mental damage and major loss of brain function

Approximately 12-14 days after contact, SCP-5259-1 will turn violent and sporadic. They will stop making intelligible speech, instead making gurgles and shouts. They will continue to show signs of stages 2-5, along with violent, animalistic or even rarely cannibalistic behavior. SCP-3283-1 will stop eating properly, and grown thinner and thinner. SCP-5259-1 may also begin to cut into its self, leading to a premature death, but this is very rare and SCP-5259-1's malnourished nature at this stage means it is unable to do severe damage to it's body.

7. Complete neural decay and eventual death

Approximately 15 days after contact, SCP-3283-1 will become completely catatonic, and eventually go brain dead. Their dead bodies show the effects of extreme necrosis, and also decay at an extreme rate, sometimes completely dissipating in a matter of hours or days.

1. These objects can give humans and animals they come into contact with SCP-5259's disease, if they are held/interacted with for long enough.

2. Animals affected by SCP-5259 are classed as instances of SCP-5259-2, and show signs of rabies,swine flu and partial necrosis before shortly dying 1-2 days after contact. Their bodies can infect other animals and humans with SCP-5259's disease on contact/exposure similar to SCP-5259-1, but decay at an increased rate.

3. Treatment of SCP-5259's disease involves injections of diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) into the subjects bloodstream, a chemical that binds to radioactive particles in the blood and causes them to be excreted in urine. Other common radiation treatments have been shown to work against SCP-5259, but DTPA is most effective.
