Item #: SCP-3436
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-3436 is marked by a 11.5 x 12 hectare, 2.5 meter-tall chain-link of commercial quality. The fence has been lined with privacy tape to discourage visualization into the area by passersby. Additional diversional measures include prominent signage indicating the prohibition of trespassing, and an industrial-grade gate lock at the fence’s sole entrance. The gate’s perimeter is subject to continual surveillance by an installment of personnel stationed in camouflaged outposts.
Military-grade containments for SCP-3436 were denied by Foundation resource officers citing the need to minimize civilian attention in the setting of several historical, upper-class suburban developments surrounding the site, which the city is intolerant of evacuating to our full operational control. Additionally, the construction of complete enclosures would effectively blind researchers to the solar behaviors that are unique to the site.
In the event of an identified trespassing, said personnel are to respond on foot into SCP-3436 for immediate civilian retrieval. Amnestic interventions may be indicated if the retrieved subject is not in need of immediate medical care, in which case amnestics should be conserved until vital signs have been stabilized, and a medical professional’s assessment has confirmed the presence of sufficient neurological activity to justify their use.
The use of thermal goggles inside SCP-3436 is no longer recommended (see Addendum 1). Agent ████ ███████, et al. demonstrated that when coupled with tactical incursion, night-vision goggles alone are sufficient to complete retrievals within the estimated time allotted by SCP-3436, after which spontaneous abduction is highly suspected to occur (approximately [DATA EXPUNGED] minutes). As of ██/██/20██, it is mandatory that responding personnel administer the aerosolized anxiolytics made available to them a minimum of 2 minutes prior to entering SCP-3436.
Description: SCP-3436 is a FEMA-designated flood plain situated within the dense suburbia of ████████, Mississippi. Since 19██, it has been a Foundation-registered Class IIb area of paranormally frequent disappearances. It was previously the site of the ███████ Golf Course and Club, which ceased operations in 19██. The terrain is characterized by undulating landforms and is flanked by fluvial terraces. It retains human-made artifacts which are now overgrown with invasive flora. Current data is insufficient to suggest whether the paranormal elements of SCP-3436 are native to the land or are the effect of an entity, or entities, within it. The initial stages have begun for a multidisciplinary research effort that aims to better understand the etiology of SCP-3436.
Analysis of botanical samples from SCP-3436 reveals species that are inconsistent with the surrounding ecology. In 19██, 14% of plant-life retrieved from SCP-3436 were species otherwise exclusive to well-documented geographical locations (n=35), the most remote being Restrepia schizosepala of Ecuador. Statistical analysis of serial surveys in 19██, 19██, 20██, and 20██ correlated increasing percentage of atypical flora with flooding incidents (P<0.001 for all comparisons) and confirmed that 100% of the atypical species documented were collected from overgrowth upon vestigial human-made objects. Recent projections estimate the ratio of endemic to atypical species could now be as high as 57% (SD +/- 10.43%).
From the time the Foundation has overtaken management of the plot, hundreds of trespassers have been retrieved. 86% of these civilians experience complete and successful return to civilian life within hours. 16 (sixteen) civilians confirmed to have entered the borders of SCP-3436 have never exited. Several more historical disappearances in the area are inferred with moderate probability to have occurred within SCP-3436, although they predate the Foundation’s study and cannot be verified. Of the sixteen, none have been successfully relocated. (See Addendum 2.)
Empirical data suggests that the solar behavior in SCP-3436 is dependent upon the presence of human beings. Case studies report that upon entering the area during daylight hours, a sunset invariably occurs respective to the viewer(s), and approximately [DATA EXPUNGED] minutes later, night falls. By all objective means, the area follows normal weather patterns and has identical sunrise and sunset times as its geographic coordinate. Thus far, this phenomenon is always observed, regardless of the time of day one enters the area. No change in solar behavior has been observed when entering the area at night. Individuals who enter SCP-3436 during daylight hours experience temporary blindness lasting 2-4 hours after exiting the premises. It is theorized that SCP-3436 prefers visual obfuscation for the observation and obtainment of potential abductees. Use of optoelectronic devices, such as infrared and night vision prevents adverse effects of the sunset event.
