Item #: SCP-xxxx
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-xxxx is currently restricted from all Foundation personnel. Any personnel or civilians found attempting to access SCP-xxxx without reason are to be terminated on sight. Armed marine convoys are to be posted no less than 5 kilometers away from the location of SCP-xxxx. Should anomalous properties be observed developing on SCP-xxxx, an armed squadron is to be sent in equipped with plasma rifles, hazmat suits, and gas masks. Use of positron grenades is authorized only under Code-Red circumstances or higher. If a Code-Black containment breach occurs on SCP-xxxx, detonation of an on-site nuclear warhead, installed directly on SCP-xxxx, is authorized.
If any armed personnel patrolling the area around SCP-xxxx, are found to be experiencing symptoms consistent with those of CSF leaks1, are to be terminated as soon as possible. If any patrol boat should accidentally enter SCP-xxxx’s active range, the boat, and every personnel on it, are to be considered “infected”, and are to be eradicated without hesitation.
In the event that the on-site warhead should need to be activated, all patrol boats in the area are to converge on SCP-xxxx’s location immediately. Once aboard SCP-xxxx, all squads are to make their way to the warhead silo, and activate the missile. (For activation instructions, see Addendum-xxxx-03)
Description: SCP-xxxx is the island of Heligoland, located Northeast of the German state of Lower Saxony. The island, at one point, had a population of around 1,500 residents, and was a popular tourist destination. As of [REDACTED]/2001, however, it has been deserted. Suddenly, the entire population disappeared, and any tourists stepping foot on the island also disappeared.
The cause of the mass disappearance is unknown. Research into the disappearance is underway, as the effects of the island seem to have ceased. Research has been suspended indefinitely (see Incident xxxx-01). Little is known about which, if any, life forms remain on the island. Sounds of birds, heavily distorted, have been reported by armed guards assigned to SCP-xxxx. Reports also state that sounds of distorted screaming can be heard when the area is silent.
Any persons entering SCP-xxxx's active range of 5 kilometers are immediately drawn to the town located on the shore of the island. Upon arrival, subjects (hereby referred to as SCP-xxxx-1) will attempt to mutilate themselves in a violent fashion, always resulting in death. The method of self-mutilation varies from subject to subject. No testing of any kind has ever been conducted involving SCP-xxxx-1.
Unmanned drones have been previously used to investigate SCP-xxxx, however, operations have been suspended, due to a corruption of footage which lead to the suicide of three staff members (see Incident-xxxx-02). However, the footage was recoverable (see Video Log).
SCP-xxxx containment breaches are sorted into three classes based on the strength of the effects observed: Yellow, Red, and Black. Code Yellow breaches are the easiest to manage. Code Red breaches require considerably more resources. Code Black breaches require the detonation of the on-site nuclear warhead. The following is information regarding the specific events and effects of each type of breach.
Code Yellow: Code Yellow breaches are common, and occur, on average, around twice per month. During a Code Yellow event, various species of seagull and avocet are observed fleeing the area, despite long-range surveillance showing no signs of the presence of these animals. After 5-7 minutes, the birds cease their actions. The birds are mostly harmless, however, Foundation staff are instructed to shoot down as many birds as possible.
After the wave of gulls and avocets makes its flight, tremors will begin. These tremors range from 3.5-8.2 on the Richter scale. A heavy, dense fog will cover the island completely. The tremors also seem to awaken something on the island itself, as a loud roaring noise can be heard, and silhouettes depicting a creature standing about 10 meters tall seen, but no life form detected.
After these events, numerous corpses, unidentifiable and deformed (referred to as SCP-xxxx-3), animate from beneath the water's surface. It is believed that these corpses are the previous residents of Heligoland. The newly animated cadavers will proceed to attack any human who enters SCP-xxxx's active range. The corpses remain mobile for 1-5 hours.
Containment of a Code Yellow breach is simple. All personnel assigned to SCP-xxxx are to vacate the area, putting a distance of two additional kilometers between themselves and SCP-xxxx's active range.
Code Red: Code Red breaches are rare, and occur only once per year, without fail, on the same date the population of Heligoland mysteriously vanished. Containment of Code Red breaches is substantially more difficult, and requires at least one of the active squads to enter SCP-xxxx's active range and dispose of the threat themselves.
The events leading up to the breach are exactly the same as Code Yellow containment breaches. Including the birds, earthquakes, fog, and depiction of a creature. However, rather than corpses animating and becoming violent, the town located on the island will instantly explode, and will regenerate itself after precisely 2 days. A mass of flesh and blood begins to form on the island, quickly growing to heights upwards of 25 meters (henceforth referred to as SCP-xxxx-2). The mass is known to be sentient and dangerous. Destruction of this being requires pulse rifles and positron grenades.
Squads ordered to recontain SCP-xxxx must do so with haste. The squad must dock on the island, and use all available arms and explosives to destroy SCP-xxxx-2. Should any squad members survive a Code Red event, they are to be terminated immediately.
Code Black: No Code Black event has ever occurred while SCP-xxxx has been under Foundation supervision. Little is understood about the events of Code Black events. The only information gathered comes from a series of notes discovered in the house of one of the former denizens of Heligoland. What follows are said notes, which has been restored due to damage:
Dear Mother,
I am writing to say that I may never see you again. A heavy fog is setting on the island, and people are going mad. Just last night, I heard Henry next door scream something unintelligible at his wife, Margret. They were always such a happy and friendly couple. I've been hearing talk that Donna has murdered her husband. I fear the rumors may be true, I haven't seen him in days. I will write again, if I still can.
Love, your son, Richard
The next note details the first events to occur on the island:
//Dear Mother,
It has been two weeks since the fog settled. You can barely see more than half a meter in front of you anymore. The police have instructed us to stay in our homes. At the time of writing this, at least 5 earthquakes have rattled our town.
Apologies for the cut, the police had made an announcement. Apparently, nobody on the mainland knows of any fog. They say they cannot see it. I fear I may also be turning mad- Jesus, I heard an explosion by the Lange Anna2. I have been hearing things Mother. Sounds of small critters scuttling above me. Yesterday, the whole town swore it could hear a faint roaring. I must go now, it sounds like the police are taking roll.
Love, your son, Richard//
This last note fleshes out the details of the mass disappearance:
Mother,
I am afraid. We are all afraid. Judith, down the street, is gone. I just heard from her yesterday. By the hour, more people go missing, and I fear I may be next. Loud, thumping footsteps can be heard each night. We have been cut off from the outside world, no radio messages are getting in or ou-
This last message was never finished, as the man had disappeared suddenly. Based on these letters, it is discovered that a creature, likely the same one depicted in Code Yellow and Red events, had appeared with the fog, though no other clues have been discovered, as expeditions into SCP-xxxx have been cancelled.
Addendum-xxxx-01: The creature silhouetted in the fog appears similar to a human in many aspects, except for height, and the existence of several fangs in the mouth. No research into the silhouette can be performed, as it has no physical form, and is just a shadow.
Addendum-xxxx-02: Each squad assigned to SCP-xxxx are to be comprised of five men. Three of whom are standard Foundation task force members, Tier 3 or higher. One man is a sniper, outfitted with a modified version of the same pulse rifle. The last is a demolitions expert, equipped with the squads positron grenades.
Adendum-xxxx-03: To activate the on-site warhead, the squad leaders must convene at the silo, and use their given keycards to open the series of doors that presents itself. The pin code, provided on-site, must be entered three times, and the button labeled, activate must be pressed. The squads are not to leave the island at any point during or after activation.
Incident-xxxx-01: The first incident regarding SCP-xxxx was after a manned expedition to the island was carried out. All personnel going along with the expedition had vanished within a 2 hour period. Radio connections were stable until about 1.5 hours into the journey, where radio signal with the island was suddenly lost. It was after this incident that an unmanned expedition went underway.
Incident-xxxx-02: After Incident-xxxx-01, multiple Foundation personnel agreed to send an unmanned drone into SCP-xxxx. No bodies were discovered, and recording data was saved. Playback of the footage caused severe hallucinations in those viewing. Subjects reported seeing visions of the end of the world, as well as a "monster" matching the description of the silhouette. All three of the afflicted persons committed suicide after 2 days of nonstop hallucinating.
Video Log: The footage begins with the drone rapidly approaching the island. A dense fog is settled over SCP-xxxx. Upon arrival, the fog seems to dissipate, allowing nearly perfect vision of the island. The drone sweeps the island, finding nothing unusual. At the 1:30:47 mark, the footage becomes fuzzy, and a faint image of an anomalous creature can be seen by any human viewing the footage. At this point, however, the personnel operating the drone saw no such image.
At the 2:12:01 point, a small child is seen running and screaming from the village. The drone approaches the child, but, close inspection shows the child is one of the SCP-xxxx-3's. Something massive attacks the drone, nearly crushing the entire thing.
End Log
Footage was only recovered as a result of the fact that all data was being saved to a cloud file, accessible to Foundation staff.
Footnotes:
1. CSF leaks (cerebrospinal fluid leaks) occur as a result of injury or shock. The symptoms shown are: headaches, nausea/vomiting, neck pain & dizziness, changes in vision, hearing, and balance, a sweet or salty taste in the mouth, or a tingling/burning feeling in arms or fingers.
2. Lange Anna is a formation of sandstone standing 47 meters tall, and located at the northwestern end of the island. It is considered a natural monument, and is slowly eroding to nothing.
