Item #: SCP-LYRE

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-LYRE is to be locked inside a reinforced metal box contained in a soundproofed, steel-lined room. Door must be kept locked at all times. Research personnel are forbidden from coming into contact with the SCP, and SCP-LYRE may only be handled indirectly to avoid falling under its influence.

Description: SCP-LYRE appears to be a heavily rotted wooden lyre strung with four rusted strings. Analysis has shown the strings to be composed of a mixture of muscle tendons and an unidentifiable metal; bone fragments have been embedded in the wood, and increase in number with each playing. SCP-LYRE was discovered lying in a pool of SCP-LYRE-1 in the storage room of the condemned █████ Theatre by Agent Heraldsen in Obwalden, Switzerland. Anyone who comes into physical contact with SCP-LYRE will suddenly experience an uncontrollable desire to play it, consistently producing the same melody at a similar skill. The subject’s playing has the effect of disrupting the thought processes of any other nearby listeners, causing them to struggle with cohesive speech and become increasingly drowsy.

Upon reaching the 5-minute mark of continued play, the subject’s fingers begin to wear away, appearing to liquify and becoming a viscous, fleshy substance designated SCP-LYRE-1. Subjects are unable to communicate distress directly, but clear signs of intense pain become visible as they turn pale and begin to sweat feverishly. At this point, listeners will cease higher brain functions and become completely enthralled with the music, often collapsing where they stand and swaying to the melody.

Upon reaching the 10-minute mark, the subject will have lost most of the structure of their hand to SCP-LYRE-1. It is unknown how they continue to play, as the substance often covers SCP-LYRE to the point that it becomes indistinguishable from the subject’s body. Despite this, their ability to play SCP-LYRE remains unhindered. Subjects also often experience liquefaction in other parts of their body, finding it increasingly harder to stay standing and maintain their balance. At precisely 10 minutes and 25 seconds, the listeners’ organs will begin to liquefy in a similar fashion, generally beginning with facial organs such as the eyes and tongue.

By the point of 15 minutes, subjects will have fully liquefied into a large, unidentifiable pool of SCP-LYRE-1. Despite having no possible way of being played by the subject, SCP-LYRE will produce music for up to a minute after loss of body coherence or forcible removal from SCP-LYRE-1. Upon extraction from the material, research personnel have noted the lyre will often have replaced a small part of itself; although which part it replaces seems to be random, it has in the past replaced its own broken strings and reinforced its wooden pieces.

Remnant traces of SCP-LYRE-1 will slowly creep towards the direction of SCP-LYRE no matter how far they are transported; samples of the liquid have been observed to move themselves from distances as far as 25 kilometers away. SCP-LYRE-1 will pool within a 5 meter radius of SCP-LYRE and infiltrate the surrounding area, resulting in the advanced decay of organic materials save for SCP-LYRE itself. Decaying materials will eventually liquefy, joining SCP-LYRE-1's mass.

If SCP-LYRE is allowed to go more than 20 days without being played, a shard of bone will dislodge itself from the SCP and begin to move towards SCP-LYRE-1. Should it be allowed to submerge itself in the fleshy mass, the shard will begin to construct a "shell" out of SCP-LYRE-1, henceforth referred to as SCP-LYRE-2.
